Why I do not get you in concerts in spite of having tremendous sound production in your nimble figures.
But why he didn't play tabla here? All other artists have played or sung.
looking forward to more such sessions.

Very insightful
Zakir bhai did not start the trend of playing compositions of other gharanas, it was already there. Anindo ji in the recently uploaded baithak video explains how tabla maestros even in the past have always played compositions from a mix of gharanas. Thirakwa khansab used to play multiple gharanas, all of Pt. Gyanprakash Ghosh's students (including Anindoji) play mix of gharanas. And then there are examples of one gharana adapting compositions from another, like Benaras has gats from Punjab, Kaydas from Delhi, etc.
But I agree that most new tabla players follow Ustad Zakir Hussain to some extent.
Thirakwa Khan Saab himself had material from 4 gharanas. Munir Khan Saab was the first real "collector and dissemination".
So , , Ustad Fazal Qureshi is a ustad in talking!

He is right about Benaras Gharana.. lol
Benaras uthaan is the most beautiful composition whether it's accompaniment or solo playing... After 1.5 hours of jor jhalla, tabla player has every right to bring some caffeine flow by uthaan.
Probably the self proclaimed ustad tried hard to play Banaras uthan but failed to bring the beauty in his hand, like many other great compositions he tried in his life so far...and now the frustration is speaking...
Agree fully. Also it seems the Ustad has forgotten that Pt. Samta Prasadji and Pt. Kishan Maharajji of Benaras were the most favorite tabla accompanists of Ustad Vilayat Khan. And both maestros used to play the benaras uthaan at the start every time and Vilayat Khansab would happily give them time throughout the concert to play elaborate tabla compositions. There are many recordings on youtube in which UVK praises Kishan Maharaj and Samta Prasad. So many other musicians also like and respect benaras gharana. Zakir ji has a lot of respect for Pt. Kishan Maharaj and Pt. Samta Prasad.
So in my opinion, it does not suit Ustad Fazal Qureshi to talk ill about another gharana.

Mujhe baithak ka har episode bahut pasand h, par humare sangeet me hindi se itna parhez kyu, aur eglish ko itna samman, ye sahi nhi,,,,,, aap sabhi bade log hai,,,, mai mafi chahta hun aaplogo se,,,, par mujhe bahut bura lagta h, jab apne sangeet hindi ko ignore kiya jata h
