Her lower register sounds fabulous here - many points in the lower range I cant tell who is singing!

Glorious...Sung in English, and one can hear every word...So effortless for her and with consistent beauty of tone.

Monica Sinclair (Tunstall) was my Grandmother. Thanks for uploading.

Wow really? She was so great both in serious and (even more so) in comical opera roles! How proud you must be! She's missed and very well remembered by all opera fans. ;-)

@@Homoclassicus Thanks, yes she was also a wonderful grandmother so multi-talented. Great to have these recordings to keep her memory alive.

How wonderful! I worked at the Met Opera when she sang there and we became good backstage friends. I was already an enormous fan of hers from growing up with the Sargent Gilbert & Sullivan recordings. I LOVED her personality, and she was a very multifaceted singer, a great Handelian of course. What a thrill to "meet" you here!

Tua nonna mi e' sempre piaciuta molto. Cantava tutto. Era sicuramente un'ottima musicista. Come cantante comica sicuramente impagabile. Dal vivo non l'ho mai vista perché in Italia e' venuta una sola volta ma ne sarei stato felice. Cordiali saluti da Roma.

What a treat! Saw this opera at Lyric in Chicago a couple years ago and Vitellia struck me as a difficult role with its range extremes. Ms. Joan is stunning here, though I would prefer Italiano!

    6:03 , 6:23, 6:33, 8:05 great chest voice . it's sad she didn't use her chest voice so often.

Indeed her lower notes sound amazing here. She had great low notes when she thought a stronger approach in them was appropriate. She sounds positively heroic and even somewhat mezzo-soprano-like in the lower notes in 0:36-1:06. Amazing singing, a truly imposing Vitellia.

You can hardly tell her apart from monica, a contralto, in the lower range here.

Utterly glorious singing. Early JOAN SUTHERLAND - simply divine.

Oh Boy! Thank you. I have said before that Dame Joan would have made a terrific Vitellia. And a bonus to hear Monica Sinclair who was a much admired artist in Britain. As an afterthought it is better to hear opera sung in the original language. The translation here leaves a lot to be desired.

Joan never had the incredible middle register of Maria but her upper register was simply unequalled by any soprano in recorded history

Paul Lewis, Callas e Sutherland sono state le due cantanti piu' importanti del XX secolo...e anche dopo.
