As celebration of the lunar new year, the ‘tet’ is an important holiday to Vietnamese people.
In January 1968, the North Vietnamese and Communist Viet Cong forces would use the event to their advantage to strategically launch an offensive when the enemy’s guard was down.

"The north-vietnamese and Vietcong forces would use the event in their advantage and *strategically* planned an offensive"
They straight up broke their promise.
Was it a brain fart by NVA high command?
What make them do that while bleeding American to death strategy performed by Viet Cong was working fine?
@@thanakonpraepanich4284 I think it was the best option they had if they were going to go through with the attack, but in all honesty fighting the US head on would be be like a chihuahua trying to fight a German Shepherd. Its going to go exactly like you think.
The U.S. was planning to pull troops out anyway since South Vietnam never agreed to sign the contract that would put them under American territory.
@@thanakonpraepanich4284 The idea was to destroy South Vietnamese, and possibly American, morale, thereby ending the war faster. It's not unheard of for weaker forces to try to destroy the morale of a technically stronger enemy with big, risky victories. In the US Civil War, the entire Confederate strategy was to try to win enough big battles to either convince the Europeans to get involved or to cripple Union morale.
In the case of both wars, the strategy backfired but the North Vietnamese enjoyed far more foreign support (Communist China and Soviet Union both provided money, weapons, supplies, and training) than the Confederates as well as a populace that was more "willing" to stomach heavy losses.

Back in the AF we had a South Vietnamese Sergeant who was actually there lifting his family members onto those 'Choppers' DURING the Tet Offensive...
The Usa military story is so 🔥🔥
Some would suggest one of the reasons for the Tet offensive was Giap wanted to get rid of the VC. He feared that when the war was over they might not support all of the North's ideas and they wouldn't follow orders like the NVA.
Another reason one can take right out of Clauswitz On War. Knowing they'd never beat the Americans in the field, the only way to win was to reduce their will to fight.
Westmoreland claims he's got 'em on the run and then Tet happens. It worked very well for Giap. Please excuse all my spelling mistakes. I just opine without checking spelling.

From a strictly military viewpoint, the Tet Offensive was a desaster for the NVA and Vietcong.
They were beaten back by the US and South Vietnamese troops and their casulties were immense.
BUT,from a propaganda/morale standpoint it was a great sucess.
Not only did they managed to demoralise the US troops but they also strenghten the Anti-War movement back in the USA.
Its the Tet offensive that mainly instigated the anti vietnam war movement all across america and lead to the eventual withdrawal of american troops..so it was a plus for the NVA
My grandpa was friends with a local South Vietnamese man, during the Vietnam war. When my grandpa left Vietnam with the rest of the US, that Vietnamese man and his family including his children were executed when the North took over, because that man refused to give up his freedom of speech and religion.

You know, you never defeated us on the battlefield.” Colonel Tu thought about that for a minute, then replied: “That may be so. But it is also irrelevant.” - Col Henry Summers April 1975
SgtBaker16 their aid was no more unlimited than American aid to the south, in fact it was undoubtedly worth less
@Skrooge Lantay by 1972 i think they cut of aid to south Vietnam what are you gonna do with all of that if you dont have repairs fuel or ammo. North Vietnam was still supplied by the ussr and chinese they had what any soviet soldier had
That's what I always think they win pretty much most battles but leave so they lost. It's always funny though people who wouldn't have the guts to fight on either side always argue on history videos and posts it's sad they can't just discuss the history civily. It always devolves to petty bickering I've noticed usually always being something like the qoute in the original comment.

My first year in the Army was in 1993. My platoon Sgt was in Vietnam one day before Tet.
He laughed and told me his first day was relaxed and they got to drink beer and BBQ. He was told it was pretty quiet and not to expect much. The next day was Tet. He was almost killed by a B40 rocket. The guy was tough as nails. I had much respect for him.
Lol! When I got to my first line unit, 3rd ID in Germany, my Platoon Sgt was a Vietnam Vet to. He was one of the most interesting...and colorful, individual I've ever met.

Born to kill for peace? Lol

I thought soldiers did that stuff for good luck, I read about it in a book written by a US marine who served in Vietnam.
I can imagine a conversation like:
Soldier: I was BORN TO KILL!!! *leaves* PEACE!
Casualties numbers not always represented any sides' victory, but strategic victories can always change the tie of the war...
OG Frost Well, both of them are allies and shared same ideology so....
Shiro Fukuroi The biggest ally the North had was the US media. It completely destroyed the public support.

I️ asked my grandfather about the war and he said he doesn’t remember much of the fighting. He told me he was in country in 68 and then he mentioned that he was in hue. He suffered from ptsd after the war but now remembers very little of the fighting. I️ don’t know if I️ believe in god but I️ like to think that the battle finally being erased from his mind is a blessing. Also he takes medication from the VA for ptsd so maybe that’s it

My grandfather is a local of Saigon and was present in the city when the offensive happened. He was employed as a freelance driver back in the days, he used to do truck shipments, taxi service or as a personal driver. During the later phase of the battle of Saigon when the heat had died down, he took to delivering shipments.
Now he told me that when he approached a road that situated near a US army encampment, a few people stopped him from entering the street and coerce him to go somewhere else, be didn't want to pick a fight so he complied.
Later after a few days he found out that the road that day was a Vietcong sniper zone, they were aiming for easy-to-pick military persons going in and out of the camp and had taken the lives of several US soldiers that day. The people who stopped him were probably Vietcong as well and didnt want civillians to get caught on the street. He didn't tell me what happened to the sniper and the group and I didn't ask.
