  • INFANTRYMAN'S GUIDE: Winter Field Shelter - "Von Reck" system.
    In this video we will look at a tactical field consideration for establishing a four man field shelter in a cold weather environment, using the venerable USGI shelter half. The Von Reck field shelter with enable four men to sleep underneath cover while simultaneously providing the ability to have a fire for warmth and cooking.

    Did this on Mt Fuji Japan. During snow training. But we had dry grass on bottom. Rubber mats and ponchos floor. Ponchos as roof also. Squad stove for heat and cook.

    I had that same shelter system in Basic Training, Sergeant Major, but was never taught

    Thank you for pointing out techniques for cutting down on signature. Hopefully helps some that need this information no the weather is getting extremely cold in occupied areas.

    Alaska NG here. I might bring this up when we do our cold weather training in February. We aren't issued shelter halves anymore, but we do have tarps that can be used instead.

    been taught similar style of shelter, just with rectangular shelter halves. Also, seems like it was about the worst possible weather for winter there is, wet and cold but not frozen.
