I was never a big fan of his, as he always scored against my team (Boro) and kept my hero Johnny Hendrie out of the Scotland squad, but by god he reminded me of why football was so much better 20 years ago. If footballers today had 1% of his the self respect, respect for his supporters and pride for his profession John has it would be a much better sport. Bolton fans have a true legend there.
I remember seeing him when I was a lad watching millwall and he scared a couple and I remember thinking he's good. Then that same season he scores against us when he went to Bolton. We turned pretty quickly on him as you do. Definitely a loss losing him but then again we did have some good goal scorers at that time in Alex rea and so on.
Some parts of this are so hard to watch. You can see how sad he is as his realises how his kindness was taken for granted . He's a dying breed so loyal and thoughtful of others
I keep revisiting this particular podcast regularly, because I have tremendous respect for big John McGin, he was a powerful goal scorer who always gave his all for his teams, in matches & training. He’ll always be a legend to me and many others. 🤩
Listened to this podcast from start to finish & thoroughly enjoyed it. John comes across as the most down to earth guy who just loves football. Absolutely fantastic :)
Still a legend in Bolton. Really enjoyed this podcast as I was a season ticket holder at Burnden in the years he played there and they were great years. Sad to hear it wasn't paid what he was worth by the club BUT as fans.. we treated him like the legend he is! Super John McGinlay!
Went into watching this expecting stories about nights out etc but this was fantastic. Football needs more McGinleys. What a bloke. One of the best episodes
What a genuine and lovely guy. A true Bolton legend. I'm a die hard Blackburn Rovers fan but I used to go and watch the odd Bolton game in the 90's with my Bolton pal on the Burnden Terrace. By eck it was lively on there. Great memories. I bet Super John will be at Wembley for the final. Good luck , hopefully see you lot at Ewood next season.
What a selfless bastard... John like browny kept saying your a dieing breed of character. Hope your financially stable... There's some players earning 50k a week who don't produce for games on end. Top interview
the players of today could learn a lot from the attitude of John McGinley....a dying breed....genuinely knew he was privelaged to be playing football....not entitled as so many youngsters nowadays....brilliant podcast.
Absolute quality what a fantastic guy love how passionate he is about wanderers and the town and its people, top man. I enjoyed all of the great times at Burnden, they'll never be topped. Cheers Super John!
Bolton legend, they said it themselves he's a dying breed, probably a dead breed in football tbh, not having an agent was probably a bad thing for him, he deserved to be treated like a king at Bolton, by the board at the club, he was treated like a king by the fans but the people behind the scenes took advantage of his good nature and loyalty, can't believe he turned down Celtic to stay there, massive respect for him, one of Footballs good guys is John.
Good shout James. Brown & Parkin's football knowledge is unbelievably bad. Brown the tit will be one of those that talks about football as if it never existed before 92 and the Premier League. It kills Sky Sports that Sheffield United and Brian Deane scored the first ever Premier league goal. As soon as he came out with that I went straight to the comments and thought "Please someone correct him. Someone mention Brian Deane and Sheffield United. Good man👍
@@newrybhoy74 you're right they have got bad football knowledge, however, they played professional football at a high level and didn't just leave stupid youtube comments. get a grip nobhead
@@stuartwaggett7316 why should you? Do you think messi knows that fact? Most footballers don’t have great football knowledge. This is a chat amongst people, this isn’t a documentary. So no you’re wrong, a podcast is about a conversation not facts. If you listen to this for facts you’re in the wrong place.
When you wiki johns record of games and goals and how he fought through the lowest leagues right to the prem he really is a “ legend “ loyal also turning down Celtic 3 times the club he supported. He is as they said a completely dying breed in the game
I've been a life long Bolton fan and John is in my top 3 all time favourite players. I had a season ticket throughout his time at the club and travelled all over the country watching the whites. Bit surprised his partnership with Andy Walker wasn't mentioned and he didn't say that initially it was Roy McFarland took over from Bruce, not just Colin Todd. Audio quality was a bit low but very enjoyable watch, with lots of things I didn't know.
Just found this, brilliant podcast…..absolute Bolton legend honest and humble, loves his football and by the way what a finisher…….. Super Super John……
Remember watching John playing for Shrewsbury Town. What a player! He always stood out. You could tell he was going to go to a higher level. Top player!
John McGinlay was one of those players who could find space in a phone box. Saw him at Luton during the Bruce Rioch years - . Best player on the pitch, in what has to be said was a very good Bolton team.
This is why i love this podcast. Went to Burnden as an away fan in 1987 and the Reebok in the league cup in 2001. Disgusting what’s happening to lots of clubs.
Another great episode. How about interviewing the first footballer turned rock n roll star 😀 Paul McGregor of Nottingham Forest 👍🏻 he’ll have loads of great stories of Forest and The Stone Roses, The Verve etc 🙌🏻
Yeovil legend, played QPR in 1987 in the FA Cup, we were Non League they were Division one (Premier). Biggest game of his career at that point,... He forgot his boots :)
I saw Big John play in one of his first few games for Bradford City at Maine Road, weirdly enough, exactly 24 years ago today in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. You could tell he was a Bolton legend, because there was about a dozen Bolton fans in their Bolton shirts in with the away fans, in that odd temporary (it felt temporary anyway) stand at Maine Road made out of scaffolding. The Bolton fans obviously only turned out just to support John. You wouldn't get many fans these days going to a game to support an ex player, no matter who they were or who they played for I don't think. Shame it didn't work out for him at Bradford City, I know the fans really wanted him to do well. But by the season after, Paul Jewell had replaced Kammy, we'd signed the likes of Lee Mills and Robbie Blake up front and we were Premiership bound.
Big John Mc a dying breed who played for the love of the game as well as the rewards that is why he is still loved and respected by the most important people at the club the fans. Unlike the other mercanry and minge bag John Parkin.
Teddy scored the 1st, televised goal, in a 1 - 0 win against. Liverpool. I. The Premiership goal, was scored by Brian Deane for Sheffield Utd, in a 1 - 1 draw against the defending champions Leeds, 🤔 I think. It may not have been Leeds but it was definitely Brian Deane.
Why didn't he come to Celtic if he loved playing for the badge. And hopefully they would have looked after him. A legend of man. Not many like it around today 👌🏻
ParkeyI know it was in 2019 but have you 2 crates of beer under your seat. By the way I saw you at St Wilf last week you went through the motions…you gotta give more than that at sportsman’s dinners.
Rioch never asked Wright to play like McGinlay. What he did want to get across to Wright was how to work wiser in wide positions, something Mcginlay excelled at and Rioch thought Wright could improve there. The silence of the Arsenal players, or at least their acceptance of this version as true, wrongs Rioch immensely That said, Rioch shouldve stayed at Bolton , his Bolton stint is now seen with rose tinted spectacles but its worth remembering he left Bolton when they needed him most and is not the faultless semi god he is made out to be. Good memories, proper players from the last proper era.
Super John. Legend before I watched this but even more so now. Humble, Modest, Loyal and out of the same mould as Nat Lofthouse. This for me just showed the difference between the modern day footballer and the old school pre Bosman and pre Premier League. One John was only interested in football whilst listen to that big numpty Parkin and you get the impression all he cares about is £$£££. Not only that he was a pretty crap forward and his performances in front of the camera are equally embarrsaing.
Johns a good guy but dont think he was good enough for celtic especially when henke was here might have done a job but never going to be as good as the king of kings or the 3 amigos
As a Bradford fan, pity it never worked out for him during his time there. We were crying out for a good goalscorer during that time with such a talented midfield.
I was never a big fan of his, as he always scored against my team (Boro) and kept my hero Johnny Hendrie out of the Scotland squad, but by god he reminded me of why football was so much better 20 years ago. Most enjoyable for me, not in terms of jokes and stories but for his personality and love of the game,
100% not always about stories of getting bladdered and pranks
I remember John playing and what a great man. The sort of attitude from a player any supporter would wish to hear. Thanks for the Podcast.

And there’s a plaque in Asda in memory of those who died in the burnden disaster absolutely disgusting

Yes yes yes!!! I'm making the trip from Tipperary Ireland to Bolton tomorrow, will be enjoying this then
Great interview- football needs more John McGinley's - sounds like a bloke who's put more into football than he's taken out.
Fantastic! enjoyed every minute of that thanks Lads!
Pleasure to listen to Johns refreshing approach. Play first money second .
Teddy Sheringham scored the first televised goal on sky sports not the first goal of the premier league era that was Brian Deane Browny.
deano

best podcast i watched, always thought he was a decent player but he comes across as a great genuine bloke.
respect to John .. unlike today’s players he had respect and loyalty to his club he loved ..
What a man, from a Miller this lad has a heart of a gent. And deserve hero status at Bolton.
