I am an absolute beginner and the Rock identifier app helps quite a lot. It is not 100% accurate but sometimes you get an idea in which direction to look further. It is faster than a book.
I agree, and honestly I find if you don't pay for the subscription the second or third option is usually the most accurate and always make sure to double-check some photo comparisons
I love using Rock Identifier! I have never paid for a subscription and have been able to identify hundreds of rocks. One trick is to use the flashlight when you take your picture and zoom in as far as you can. It also has helped the app that we rock hounds that use it can correct the name when it does get it wrong. I have had a 90% accuracy rate with this app.
I have been trying the first app out and getting the stone wet and filling the frame and getting close up gets pretty accurate results. I think for these to work you really have to get a good photo and have a wet stone to see detail better

Just a brief comment on the porphyry. The term porphyry can be used basically for any type of volcanic rock if it has a porphyritic texture. Porphyritic texture means, that larger crystals (e.g. feldspars or quartz) are embedded in a fine-grade matrix. In fact, however, rhyolites exhibit commonly a porphyritic texture, so the app was not so wrong at this point.
Addition for the ironstone: Ironstone is usually composed of hematite or magnetite, therefore hematite was also a quite good guess.

I would think wetting the rocks for the picture and filling the frame as much as possible with the rock would help.
Love your username! A Series of Unfortunate Events was my favorite series growing up! Also good point about getting the rocks wet and taking closer pictures!
Taking pictures in natural sunlight also helps get a better picture by alot in my experience

@@OregonDARRYL Doubful; I've just tried and granted I'm not sure what the rocks collected on the beach (south of france) are but the app kept thinking the rocks were glassy/had some transparency when they really didn't. I believe the shine from the water tricks the app.
Actually it was correct with the fossil. The fossil is likely made of limestone or sandstone. It got the geode correct too. Geode is just a word for a hollow rock that gets filled with quartz. Quartz is what it is.
Oh yeah, what a great video idea here, loved this! I'm not great at identifying rocks, not even good, but I will listen to everyone's opinions and that goes for an app too! This was cool to see, thanks!

The stones are very beautiful with various motifs. I am a stone craftsman, every stone that has a good motif, I shape it as a ring to decorate my finger.

I have the first app and i mainly use it to identify if it is hard enough to tumble. I hope the technology gets better in the future.

Thank you Ariel, I have just signed up to the rock identifier app, have just id'd most of my unusual rocks. The first was a green & cream striped rock which I had no idea of & it's Amazonite.:)

I might put the stone or fossel or mineral on a black or white background.
White for dark stone, black for light stones.
Wet your rock all way around. Fill your screen with clear image. Rotate rock and take different pics. Take specimen in bright light such as outside in sunlight. If unable I might use a flashlight to gain reflections, deposits, veins etc...

The reason, more often than not, is because it is either a scam that does not work, or it is an app piggybacking off of another service that costs money (so the app marks up that price, so it can make money too)
That first app lets you add your own entry, so if it doesn’t ID it you can add your own information.
GPT-4 vision seems to do a good job if you also tell it where the rocks came from,
Those apps are usually a waste of money. I like "Rock & Minerals". A field guide... for each state. Usually very accurate.

Agreed! That’s why I said the app was half accurate. It did it’s best with what it saw! 😅

I am new to rock tumbling. And I enjoy your videos of identifying rocks. But I have been trying different ways of tumbling. Would it be possible or do you already know if it's better to tumble with plastic pellets or ceramic pellets? That would be a great video for some of us beginner's!

Good question! Ceramic media and pellets are really helpful when tumbling as they can help get into the nooks and crannies of the rocks. Typically ceramic media is used for stage 1 and 2 and plastic pellets are used for stage 3 and 4. However, often I use ceramic media up until the end. It can definitely be personal preference too!

For the geode, it is made of quartz crystals i don't see it being wrong just because it didn't say geode.
the part about the geode is ridiculous. A geode can be various things! that's like asking it to identify 'is this round and hollow, or not'.

Yup. I don't think any of the apps are very good i have a couple that require you to do what you should do anyway. Scratch test, cleavage, crystal shape, etc. Keep the goodness coming. Be happy, safe and stay healthy 😷⚒

One of my apps identified what I thought was a moss agate as a shell fossil today what’s the first time I seen fossil come up. It’s definitely not a fossil.
I got two different results once I use a picture of my rock at different angles. I don’t know which one it is. One of them said it is argonite and the other one is Citrine I don’t know which one it is please help

This app correctly id my fossils.

I have this gem identifier app i try to identify thus one looks like quartz but it was i tried again but it said quartzite

I normally use google images to identify what rock/fossil it is 😂 and it’s not accurate most of the time😅 .. but I’m a bit old school and normally (try to) use a small book about rocks/fossils in Denmark, but I find it difficult to use because I don’t feel like the ones in the book corresponds with what I find😅and what I find, isn’t normally in the book…
Can anyone (in Denmark) please give me a good “how/where to find rock/fossils in Denmark” book?😅, as I said, I’m a bit old school and enjoy the feeling of a book in my hands..😅 size of the book doesn’t really matter, but would be good if it was travel sized😊

Black diamond or hematite? I'm used to Alaska black diamond but people are trying to pass hematite off as real Alaska black. The price of both has gone way down. It's all about what is in fashion at the time.
