What about when your project sponsor has big ego and won't even look at you as the project manager, but only deal with your manager, and only attend meetings with other levels of management as the project sponsor? How do you deal with this type of difficult client? Or when this same client changes what they were asking for at the final meeting presentation? How to deal with these situations? I would honestly really appreciate it.
Basically a director came to us, seeking solutions, and would only agree to meet if the PMO director or senior manager were present, otherwise she would deem it as too low. She would never agree to meeting one on one with me, as a lowly project manager. This is government. How to deal with stuff like this?
What a difficult scenario you’re in! Ultimately you can only be responsible for yourself, so firstly you need to just keep doing the right things. Extend an invitation to meet with a clear agenda and expected outcomes so she can see the value of the meeting. Keep a decision log which accompanies all meeting presentations so it can be seen that your leadership is flip-flopping (you don’t have to make that accusation, but it will be helpful evidence to defend you from criticism if the changes of mind lead to delays). You can’t tell this person that engage with you is important. Instead show them. Make every engagement as valuable as possible, respecting their time at each engagement. In this situation, all you can do is be your best and hope the example you show encourages change.
@@InfluentialPMO I love that, a decision log. I hadn't heard of it before. Do you have any good examples on what that would look like? Maybe make a video to discuss this type of scenario and the solutions for it, as it would be beneficial to a lot of us, since I believe it is a major issue in our profession. I have encountered it way too often. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I am female, and I have a cute face, and immediately some women will demonize me, I don't know.
Interested in which project management qualifications you may need? 🤔 Check out this video next - ua-cam.com/video/hP0nEZ2v3us/v-deo.html
Sadly, the only regular engagement I get is with my Product Owner. I honestly don't even know who is the direct sponsor of our project! LOL
