Hey jimmy I would love to know the difference between Product and system design engineering and Industrial design and product engineering. Could you make a video about them and explain it? I admire you keep doing it.
Jimmy...i did not study industrial design. I took mechanical enginnering. But while i was at school i felt something is lacking with the course. At that time i have no idea what was it. Of course i love design even then. I just wasn't able to connect design and engineering back then. Then i became by experience a sales and marketing professional and was very good at it. But something always pulls me to thinking about products. How they look, how they work, and how they connect to people. No matter how i want to yake that thoughts out of my mind, it always come up kind of sucking me into it. I had only engineering drawing skill. Could i be an industrial designer with only those skills?
Hi there, I'm a mechanical engineer myself and I've been working in a company as an "industrial design engineer" that title is still weird to me, my experience has been good, I've found that to have a profound knowledge of heat transfer, physics, materials, manufacturing etc. helps a lot when designing a product, (mostly I design electronics enclosures) makes you have a more accurate angle on how the form of a feature in the design help the functionality or make it easy to manufacture therefore more cost efficient and some other pros. I do have struggle with the abstract part of the design, "the concept" as they put it, but for me I just work my way around it, a lot of videos and audio books have helped me navigate that part of my job. I creat moodboards, desribe the function and form, "the concept" and I just draw designs hoping to feel one, not sure if thats the way to go but thats how I do it So can you can be an industrial designer with just the drawing skill? yes (I use mostly Solidworks) make engineering drawings and send them manufacture but the real question is will you be doing great "design"? I'm not sure if even I do decent design, I just try stuff until my boss, most of my coworkers and I like it

Product Design companies are not a growth field in the US. Most of the design jobs have moved overseas where the products are actually made. Pay scales are much lower there but if you live there it's still a possibility.
Jony Ive basically just got lucky. Probably a 1000 other product designers with his background could have done the same thing. Not saying he's bad but really his success was only because of Apple. He got in on the ground floor with a start up who was totally open to innovation and taking big risks. That's actually rare in the corporate world where failure is not an option. Incremental changes are the only thing allowed. Plus lots and lots of stock options.
I think Ive’s key was teaming with Jobs, lacking drawing skills but had his vision for how computer products should look. Good rapport and dedication, and they created the Bondi iMac and everything else afterwards. It’s not being an Industrial Designer per se, but being an industrialist that will help you reach this monetary goal Jimmy.
That was well done. Have you considered the wealth of pervious generation designers? Well Dieter Rams is there. I am still thinking of people who did industrial design, maybe got famous and rich but because they did not study neither had such a title were not considered.
It helps a lot if you are naturally good at arts, craftsmanship, making stuff with your hands, have eye for aesthetic, and curious how things mechanically work, made, and put together. All these things were present to me as a child. Drawing, building, taking things apart were my hobbies. This natural curiosity is normally understated on how important it is to eventually become a good designer. Design school educates you on proper techniques, flows, and computer programs which should help guide and refine your already natural talents. If this is your case than it should take you about 4-5 years of training to be professionally proficient.
