Emails are nice because it is quicker for them and yourself to receive rather then waiting to go thru the mail process as well as the time some prison mail rooms take to process and deliver to the inmate.
I’ve learned a lot writing a female prison pen pal. My case is a tad different as she was an co-worker at the time so I knew her from my job. It was a case that was in the state news and media back in 2013, related to her job, and she ended up getting six years in prison. I started writing her in county which followed on into women’s state prison. She plead guilty in a plea deal so there was no trial. She had asked for friends and co-workers and family to write her. I’ll share some look-outs here, although Megan’ video covered most of it. First off set rules in the first letter. Especially about giving out name and address to other inmates. Probably best to get PO Box. After about four months of writing, shave gave out my address to another inmate in her block (that came up with her from county). That lady was nice, but started writing so much I couldn’t keep up, and seem to be welcoming herself to meeting up when she got out in eighteen months even though I made it clear no meeting up. Eventually she dropped off as I wrote limited and generic letters to her. The prison didn’t allow JPAY so everything had to be hand written and mailed. My original former co-worker/pen-pal stated she shared my info to stay in good standing with other inmates so to be on their good side as a newbie was the reason. It seems there were a lot of women at that prison looking for pen-pals, and I kind of picked up they don’t get as much mail or even family visits as men inmates would. Anyhow, I called her out on it, and after that the writings sort of went cold and eventually stopped after about another six months (a total of about a year of writing). I wasn’t at all interested in her romantically as she was married (at the time) so nothing to do with that. But in cases where the inmate isn’t married, it’s important to make that clear off the bat in first letter…you want pen-pal only. I don’t know about most states, but in my state and with this prison which is a major women’s prison in my state if not the country the mail room breezes through all yours and their letters. If something sounds suspicious they send it back or black it out with marker. Because of this there could be a delay in letters getting in and out during holiday season when there’s like 5X times more mail coming in/out of the prison as all letters have to be screened. The main thing I came to learn from the two pen-pals was you have to sort of take what they say about “what happened that landed them there” at a ratio. I would say probably (not in all cases of course and some in worse cases of course) it’s 75 to 90 percent truth, and maybe 10 to 25 percent fabrication of their reason for why they're in prison. There’s usually more to the crime than what they’re saying or want you to know so they may soft coat it (or blame someone else for them committing the crime instead of taking full blown responsibility). If there seems to be more to why they're in prison than what they tell you, than it probably is more to it than what they're telling you. Another thing is keep the first few letters short. Don’t write about your entire life in the first two letters in case you decide the pen-pal isn’t someone you want to write after all or the writings break off. I usually kept my letters to a one page, one side length. The most I wrote was two pages once in awhile. Also if pen-pal starts talking about getting in touch with their family, think carefully about it and do it only if comfortable. In my case I already knew her family since she worked at my job, but in some cases they might purposely be trying to get you connected with their family so you’re now more emotionally connected and attached with them. So you more or less have to set up rules and guidelines. If they ask for money once in awhile than maybe it's just to help buy stamps or something they really need from canteen. However if they start asking for more and more cash or always seem to be asking for it than that can be a red flag. Call them out on it. You're their pen-pal not their personal bank. I didn't have that problem, but heard of others that have. Also if you decide to no longer talk with that inmate for whatever reason than send them a fast letter letting know so not to leave them hanging or wondering so don't just ghost them. After that one final letter than you can just ghost them if they keep writing. Having a pen-pal can be fun, but at the same time as always do with caution, and never do or continuing doing something if it comes uncomfortable or is going down the wrong direction. Good luck all and best wishes and safeness.

Questions for you please. How many people did you write when you first started? How many did you end up hearing back from? About how long did it take for you to hear back/get your first letter?
I wrote to 3 when I first started. I can't remember how long it took but they typically write back right away. So it's dependent on when they get the jpay letter from the prison. And then how ever long jail takes to get to you. If you send them a letter through jpay, and they are responding through, it will take about a week to get there letter typically. If you send them a letter, it could take a lot longer. Taylor said right now, handwritten letters are taking longer to get to them for some reason.

What about home address? They can't see it, right? Is it not dangerous? It's my first time on this website, so i'm looking for something more safe like Corrlinks.
If they can respond through jpay, they don't need your address. You can even sign up on jpay with a fake name. But if they CAN'T respond through jpay and can only respond through mail, then they will need your address. You can also use a service called jmail which is great for people in a different country. You can use the address of the company so when they recieve the prison letter, they will upload it into your account.
It depends on you sent the letter (jpay, writeaprisoner, or snailmail) and how they are responding (jpay or snailmail) You can check my video on "the most common questions" in my writing to prisoners playlist where I break it down.

I recently wrote to another prisoner after not hearing back from 2 I wrote prior. I really hope this person answers, I always wanted a pen pal . I wrote to an inmate in Washington, and I’m writing from Texas . I was wondering about how long does it take to get a letter back if they chose to reply. In your experience?
Honestly it really depends. If you write through jpay and they respond through snail mail, maybe a few days to a week. If you handwrote a letter to them it could take awhile.
Do you use your full name ? With a physical address the post office probably requires full name? I'm asking because I have a unique name and if I'm googled my home that I own comes up... but I intended on using my PO box.
When it comes to writing a psychical paper letter through the mail how do I make sure they get my letter? Like what do I write on the back of the letter where a address would be?
I would look at the website for the prison they are in. It should tell u what needs to be on there. This is also why I like to use jpay for the first letter because they respond to u by mail and then u can see what u are supposed to write.
What should you do if you forgot to put the address in the message should you send it again or? Cause I sent the message off of writeaprisoner.com and I forgot to add the address...
Writeaprisoner automatically gives them all of your info. Full name, address, email and photo if you uploaded one. I never recommend writing through that. Better off just writing to them through regularly mail. Also, it could take a bit longer for the inmate to receive the letter because they only send out letters twice a month.
Does anyone know how to do this internationally? I wrote the first ' opening email', but I wonder how they would afford sending letters. I can't sign up for JPAY or for Securetech because I'm an European citizen.
If their bio states yes to the question “ can you receive and send emails on JPay” does that mean they would be able to email you back without needing an address?
I would think so. But they could mean yes to the first part and not to the second you know? I really wish these penpal sites would be clearer. You can always send an email and if you dont hear back in 48 hours max, then you probably have to give them your address.
@@LipstickLullabies yes it really bothers me that they don’t give a little more info lol but I’m glad I found this video before to help ease my mind a bit , you have helped a lot !! Thanks girly.

Was I wrong for that ?
With Taylor, it was a pain in the ass to set up the phone thing. Idk how it is in different states. But you will have to ask him what you need to do. From what I understand they do need your real number but you have to pay to talk to them (its cheap) and u have to set it up with the prison system or whatever.
Thank you so much! I did write 4 prisoners today for the first time. And I did EXACTLY how you told me to do, before I watched this video. I did make the letter a little bit longer and took me ages to do that 4 times hahahah. If there wil be a next time, I def want to make it shorter. Do you have tips to send pictures safely? I feel a little uncomfortable, because I don't want my picture to go around in the prison like "Look at this hot chick" kinda way you know? If you do not have any tips, I will just have to suck it up, because I do like to send a picture. ☺️☺️
If u are writing through jpay they can either respond back through the site or you have to give them your mailing address. Hopefully the site you found them on tells you.
Hello Megan! I know I commented on this video already but I had to again. The reason is because it's been very helpful for me. I've written inmates before awhile back, so I know more or less what to expect. It had been such awhile though, that it felt brand new all over again. So this video was a big help! Especially when you advise to keep it simple and dont over think things. You can start getting it in your head, what if they dont write back or you want to write too much in your letter for the first letter. Thank you for breaking it down and helping to keep it simple! I have one question for you. As a guide how long would you suggest waiting to hear back from an inmate before you can basically say I probably won't hear back from them? I know there is the rule to never write more than one inmate at one location. I want to be respectful and not do that. What do you think is a fair amount of time to wait for a response before moving on? Please let me know. Thank you!
I am so glad it has been helpful :) I would say right now, with everything going on, a month is probably a good indicator that you won't hear anything. I know that's long but with the USPS mess, and covid and the wildfires, the letters seem to be taking a bit longer.
@@LipstickLullabies Thank you for the advice. A month is a long time but I think its also a fair amount of time to hear back from someone through the mail. A month it is! Thank you!

Do you use your full name ? With a physical address the post office probably requires full name? I'm asking because I have a unique name and if I'm googled my home that I own comes up... but I intended on using my PO box.
I use a fake last name.
@@LipstickLullabies Hmm good idea 💡
When it comes to writing a psychical paper letter through the mail how do I make sure they get my letter? Like what do I write on the back of the letter where a address would be?
I would look at the website for the prison they are in. It should tell u what needs to be on there. This is also why I like to use jpay for the first letter because they respond to u by mail and then u can see what u are supposed to write.
Lipstick Lullabies thank you!
I can't use j pay at mine. Local jail
Great video. Very helpful. Thanks
What should you do if you forgot to put the address in the message should you send it again or? Cause I sent the message off of writeaprisoner.com and I forgot to add the address...
But i didn’t send it off of Jpay because they can’t use it
Writeaprisoner automatically gives them all of your info. Full name, address, email and photo if you uploaded one. I never recommend writing through that. Better off just writing to them through regularly mail. Also, it could take a bit longer for the inmate to receive the letter because they only send out letters twice a month.
@@LipstickLullabies okay thank you so much for the recommendation!
Great information, thank you
Of course!
This video helped me a lot!! Thank you
Yay. I'm glad.
free dein freund
Great ideas, thanks so much 💕
Does anyone know how to do this internationally? I wrote the first ' opening email', but I wonder how they would afford sending letters. I can't sign up for JPAY or for Securetech because I'm an European citizen.
Jmail.cc
I use Jmail, I'm in Australia.
Great video!
Good I am glad! Sometimes in their actual bio the inmate will tell you if they can respond or not. That's always nice.
@@LipstickLullabies hey girly , I just wanted to update you that he was able to write me back on jpay so I’m happy I don’t have to give out my address but we were talking and he was asking about if I would be comfortable to talk on the phone and just things of that nature one day and I said I didn’t mind and I gave my number , I should have asked you this before I did it lol but I honestly didn’t think anything of it because It takes nothing for me to change my number if I ever had too 😭😂 and also when I have received calls from family members (not pen pals) they would call my actual number.
You must have had success with your prisoner ??
Glad to see & know your consistent with your replies as well. 🤞🏾💯👌🏾
Lol that video was made awhile ago. I havemore updated vids on what happened.
There isnt really a safe way to send a photo. There is always a chance that other inmates will see anything you send.
Megan is a good author!
Hello I like video beautiful,my friend
Thank you :)
Thank you so much for this video. I'm thinking about this experience but I'm not so sure. Are you talking about Steven Taylor?
Nope.
do i need to give them my address so they can respond?
If u are writing through jpay they can either respond back through the site or you have to give them your mailing address. Hopefully the site you found them on tells you.
Nice
Thank you sooo much for this video, super appreciate it :)
Of course!
Thank you!
Actually two weeks is probably enough honestly.
@@LipstickLullabies Two weeks is enough? Is that long enough?
I mean it depends. I cant give u a definite answer.
The intro rap verse was 🔥🔥😂
Lol it's silly and catchy and I just dont think I can ever get rid of it haha.
I just sent two messages this morning one on jpay and the other on corrlinks... you made me realize I didn't even put my address in the message lol how long should I wait and message them again? Like oops I forgot here's my address haha
No reason to wait if they can't respond through jpay.
So I sent another message with my address and they never delivered the first message 😂 whatever hopefully I get one
