RIP Dickey Betts 4/18/2024
As Duane Allman once said about Dickey Betts, "I'm the famous one, he's the good one." Can listen to them both all day.
Now they are having a drink and a smoke upstairs in the big house! The rockin they gave us!
🌈🎶👂🏽✨
Blessed we were!!
You are SO RIGHT I COULD LISTEN TO THEM ANYTIME AND MORE,THEY WERE ONE OF AMERICA,s GREATEST BANDS EVER . R.I.P. TO THESE GREAT MUSICIAN,s ,😢AND BLESS J.J,❤🎸🎸🎹🎼🎶🎶🎶🎶❤️✌️😎BOB.
I’m a Florida native and Sarasota local my whole life, I’m honored to call Dickie a friend.
To Jason Marquez commenting above: I'm curious. Do you agree with D STR above that Dickie is quiet? He seems thoughtful from what I've seen in interviews. And then you hear stories of what a hello raiser he could be, relishing a fight. I know those traits are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Anyway, do you have news of how Dickie is faring healthwise nowadays? Anybody?
Are you serious? You're very fortunate if he's a buddy of yours!
@@pauljordan4452 yes it’s been a while since I’ve seen or talk with him due to Covid. I’ve known him and family since as long as I can remember. I grew up watching them play.
@@yvonnelaurenty6427 he’s no longer a spring chicken, what I can say about Dickie is this, when he wants to party he’s a blast. But you get in his bad side and he’s drunk look out, the old Myakka boy comes out and is ready to fight anyone.
A friend who can't spell his nickname?
Not only a great lead player but his rhythm work is the best I've ever heard.
The Allman Betts band is good, but nobody is as good as Dickey Betts. His touch is tender.
10-4 that
so excellent the opening tribute to Jerry Garcia via Franklin's Tower
One Of Thee Best Guitar Players..Ever!
A literal giant among songwriters and musicians.
DICKEY BETTS FOR ME,, IS THE NICEST, WARMEST HEARTED MAN IN MUSIC!!!! HE'S STILL ALIVE TODAY, BECAUSE OF IT! HIS HEART IS TRUE, AND HIS SONGS SHOW IT VERY, VERY WELL! HE IS THE ONE WHO INSPIRED ME TO TAKE THE GUITAR SERIOUS,,, AND 40 YEARS LATER, I'M JUST AS INDEBTED TO HIM AS I WAS WHEN I WAS 19 YEARS OLD!!! GOD BLESS HIM FOR BRINGING JOY NOT JUST TO ME,,, BUT TO MANY MILLIONS ALL AROUND THIS WORLD, LITERALLY!!!
His son Duane is a very regular and humble guy as well. I opened for this band in San Juan Capistrano here in California 3 years ago. A great group of musicians and true players.
@@bluesdawg8014 Lucky Dawg lol! Pun intended! I would have loved doing a gig with the main-man Mr. Betts!!! I was really lucky way back in the early 70's, when I was a freelance writer for college newspapers and a rock n roll newspaper called: Good Times, based in New York metro area. One interview I did was with "The Dixie Dregs Band", and Twiggs Lyndon, the Allman Brothers road manager was now managing the Dregs! This was around 1977! Well,, long story short, after telling Twiggs that I was a dyed in the wool "Allman Bros". fan,, he invited me and my photographer friend Bob into his brand new Ford Cube van! And after we three got seated inside this small private walled off space, he asks me to reach under my seat and pull out this Gibson coffin case guitar case. So, I did, and he sort of snaps at me, "well,,,, open the thing up"! Well, I slowly did! And laying inside is ................................. ~DUANE ALLMAN'S 1959 SUNBURST LES PAUL~ ............~!~ YEPPP! I was stunned....... my jaw was open for a couple quick minutes, and Twiggs says, "Go on Sonny, pic it up, play it, it don't bite"! I finally picked it up and played it VERY carefully of course! And while looking it over carefully, I turned it over to look at the back, and there on the back of the body, was the name, "DUANE" spelled with the original frets from the guitar! Twiggs told me that Greg Allman, who gave this guitar to Twiggs for his service and dedication to the band, asked that he remove all the original frets off the guitar so that nobody would ever play on them again. And with the Dixie Dregs band getting ready to jump onstage,, Twiggs politely thanked me and Bob my photographer for the interview with him and the band, and we climbed carefully out of that cube van, and mosied on over to the concert stage and enjoyed what was one of the absolute BEST bands at the time,, and arguably till now!!! Lastly, Twigg's set me up with BMF productions to do an interview with .................................... ~DICKEY BETTS~ !!!!!!! TAKE CARE!!!!!
How anybody can ever question this mans greatness is beyond me
Nobody plays it better. Dicky is THE man.
From some of the comments I'm reading it seems that Dickey has more than his share of fair weather fans. No one is at their prime forever and
I'll choose Dickey as he is now over most of what I hear these days. I first heard "Blue Sky" in the summer of 1972 and was immediately blown
away and still get that "feel good" feeling when I hear it all these years later. I really wish his singing in this video had been caught better.
Agreed! Well said.
Listen close to this version a few times. You'll see it's better than the old days in some ways. He reinterpreted the song. There's some Lou Reed in there.
As for the sound, it's just a low quality recording. Hell of a performance, though.
Dickey Betts is a modern day Mozart or Beethoven. He has composed the most incredibly beautiful masterpieces of all time. 🍑🍑🍑🍑🍑
God bless you Dickey Betts for all the joy you have brought to so many all these years‼️‼️
Wrong genre, buddy. He is more comparable to a jazz musician like Miles Davis. Master guitarist though.
Long live Dickey! On of my top ten songs of all time from any band
Top five for me and top five guitarist !
Greatest love song ever written. The jams ain't bad either 🎸🎸🎸🎸
I used to say 'I want Dickey Betts on my dinner Table' , Don't know where I got that from but I love him he is THE BEST guitar player around. Has his OWN STYLE for sure. That FREE, SINCERE OPEN Feeling you get when he plays cannot be substituted.
He may not be the Dickey Betts of times past but he is still pretty awesome!Great player!
No question about it one of the greatest if not thee greatest guitarists of all time
There is no "greatest" only your preferences for favorite
I love that he's never changed up his rig much. Just a good old Gibson guitar into a Marshall amp with just enough hair to it.
I couldn't afford a Gibson, so I went with a Telecaster through a Marshall tube amp. It works better than I expected it would for what I do.
It's important to get to know one or two guitars before you go crazy. And once you know one or two, you'll generally find that those are all you need.
My favorite guitarist playing my favorite guitar. :)
What do you like about the Gibson SG?
Awesome song by Dickey Betts Band!!!!💜💙💜💙💜💙💜!!!!-11-22-2021: Spartanburg South Carolina/
I love this song and the man who wrote it. Lord you know!
Mr betts is my first huge influence on guitar playing when I was 16. That’s how I wanted to sound I’ve evolved as a guitarist but I’ll never forget those days playing along to blue sky. Still do every now and then he’s great and underrated.
Same experience for me, Indie !!
Dickie been down the road and back, great to see him alive and playing
I lv him dude.
Amen.
Any way he plays it is fine with me! It is a timeless classic! Play on Mr. Betts, God Bless and be well.
I got to jam with Dickey in the earlier 70's in a club my band was playing at in I think Tampa,fl . , nice guy ,but quiet.
Talks with his guitar.
Got to say, whether it's Goldie, a PRS, or the SG seen here, Dickey gets the sweetest tones out of his instrument with his fingers.
rollinover11 his strat tone is best
You're dreaming, man. It's Dickey at his worst. I can't believe people
think this is good. Dickey is one of the best ever and a landmark player.
But this is just ... well ... I'll be kind and say mediocre. And I have seen
him play many times, also played with him on two occasions ( total
highlight of my guitar playing life) and this is not the Dickey Betts we all
love and cherish.
larry geetar he's old, and isn't in the greatest health. What do you expect? I'd still love to see him live even in 2018.
@@rdickinsondickinson No, simple as that. Dickey always did his best work on his Gibson SGs and Les Pauls.
@@larrygeetar9309 . . God bless Dickey for still fronting up and having a go at his age and in his depleted condition.
Don’t the audience KNOW who they’re listening to, they should just STF up in the presence of greatness
You gotta love Dickey Betts 😁
kudos to whoever got this close-up view of Dickey playin Blue Sky. Whatever he plays and wherever...he's the one and only...and I'm still a big fan...forever.
Mike McHugh right on Mike! We love ya Dickey! Eat a peach, VW
This sound generated many journeys, some to darkness, some to light...iam ever thankful for the journey it has blessed me with...Peace n love to all who read💜🤴
Happy birthday Dicky 🎉!
Dickey had a wild side but he helped so many people spreading his music around he loved helping younger musicians like his Son Duane, Berry Duane Oakley and Derek Trucks just to name few. He would help people and not want anyone to know that he did. That's humility. He loved playing with Pedro because he pushed him with his playing.
Thanks Dickey for so many, fun times. 😢
Are you kiddin'. I can't get his tunes out of my head. It's pleasant. Yup!
Rest in Peace April 2024
RIP Dickey Betts, Son of the South
Damn, a master at his craft. It's such a pleasure to see how easy he gets such sweet sounds.
learnt some of my first lead licks from him!!!love you brother
He made me proud to be a musician from the south !
love you and this song after all these years
Dickey betts, the best!
Play it Brother Dickey, if it was not for you i feel that the ABB would have folded after Duane & Berry Died. You held the band together. You kept on writing songs that kept them going. Hands Down, you were the special one that was left, and did a Great Job .. We want you to come back to Durango Colorado and do another Concert Here, WE MISS YOU, Please come back , My Best to you, Cousin Figel
+Cousin Figel Dickey WAS The Allman Brothers Band. Duane was a powerhouse but Dickey had the tunes and sweet tone. He is probably the only one who could have backed Duane when Duane went into longer 'experimental' solos. This performance is a little off but on my best day I could not match half of Dickey's worst day. Saw him and GS in Cripple Creek 2005 and my socks are still somewhere up there after being blown off!
Amen Sir‼️well spoken
I think there's a good case to be made for Gregg Allman being the backbone - spine, if you like - of the ABB. HIs was the identifiable voice and face of the band even when Duane was alive. And he was also no slouch at songwriting himself.
Warren kept the ABB together, Dickey tried to tear it apart. Wtf are you talking about?
How long did you see the Brothers for? You guys are clueless. For 95% of 1989-2014 Haynes steered that ship on and off stage. I’m dying laughing at your perceptions of that band. Smh.
It's a wonderfully relaxing performance. I want you to continue forever.
I JUST saw Dickey at St. George Theatre in Staten Island, NY last WEEK. GREAT SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dickey plays a pretty guitar 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Poor ole Dickey looked a little lost without his true brothers. Y’all know what I’m talkin about. Him and Jaimo are the last of the Mohicans. Still love his music. Originally Dickey wanted Greg to sing Blue Sky and Duane said “It ain’t happening” because it was such a brilliant composition and Duane thought Dickey would sing it best.
This is a great song. Love the way Dickie plays it.Jim
I’ve always been a big fan of his his tone, his choice of notes good stuff
Great to see you back in action Dickey! Love to your family and to Joel up in Heaven.
Almost tearing up here. The knowledge and skill he possesses is still there. I feel sure the overuse of his hands and fingers is starting to tell on him, but that picking and tone is still one of a kind. Nobody I had rather listen to play guitar than Dickey Betts. "People down in Georgia come from near and far to hear Richard Betts pickin on that red guitar."
at Auburn Univ.1972 saw the Allman Brothers first tour without Duane who's motorcycle accident had happened in 1971. Barry was still alive and playing but in several more months would meet a similiar fate. These times and lives cannot be replaced . Glad Dickey is behind an SG and still hitting the note. Cheers to Mr. Betts.
Keeping that good music alive!
Awesome @ Great, Dickey Betts!!!!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜!!!!-04-19-2021
Dickey "sweet tone" Betts. Not as fluid as his younger years but that sweet tone is instantly recognisable. The greatest guitarist ever in my opinion (humble of course)
YOU'RE RIGHT ACTUALLY! BECAUSE EACH GUITARIST IS A UNIQUE BEING, WITH UNIQUE STYLES AND TASTES! AND SO,, EACH ONE IS ACTUALLY THE BEST!!!!!
Who can do his profession at that age with that perfection? Almost nobody! Stay strong! Nice video!
Martin G Andres Segovia, Les Paul all played into their 90s and played at a very high-level, FYI just saying
@@DanniKrash just as he said, almost nobody.
Clapton can
@@DanniKrash Les Paul did, despite bad arthritis in his old age.
Here's some guys that have/can...Jeff Beck, BB King, Clapton, Gilmour, Brian May, Santana, Gibbons, Joe Perry. These are just some of the big names. Not uncommon for musicians to be close to their prime capabilities into their 70's. Betts, while still sounding good here is not close to what he was at the turn of the century, at least to my ears.
Have to admit, this is very good. Mr. Betts would be happy with this video.
1st great guitar solo I remember on am radio is I was born a Ramblin' Man
Thank YOU FOR THIS VIDEO ...
THANK YOU. THANKS A MINT
So laid back yet such a great guitar player. Big kudos.
It does not matter you cannot hear him very well, but you sure can feel him.... rock on Dickey Betts
Magical !!! Dickey Betts !!!!
I was definitely catching some Franklin tower Grateful Dead sound in the first 1:30. Sounding good
Excellent performance 👏
The tempo has slowed over the years!!
Dickey has slowed over the years.
That would be his son Duane Betts on second guitar, I believe. Nice to see and hear the torch being passed.
Oh My.....some ones been keeping up their chops. Love this cat.
Wonderful😍
4:47! Go Dickey!! Keep rockin...very nice!
Good stuff, saw ABB 12 times live Loved it once 4 drummers Rama Caseno
6:00 Dickey tearing that shit up! Sounding great!
This song always made me high.
Legend!!
Anyone that doesn't realize how influential Brother Betts' guitar playing, songwriting, and to a lesser extent his singing are to musicians then and now obviously are musically challenged. Temperamental for sure but few could walk in Brother Betts' boots.
now this is music
See Dickie kick ass University of Florida 82. So Good!
Frankie’s tower as the intro and then Into blue skies. Nice!!! What a legend.
Bet you I still can sing the entire solo of "Blue Skye" ...!
You can't sing what doesn't have words. You can whistle it though.
No matter how you feel about the current DB, you should remember that this man and the AB's created timeless music. I choose to remember and respect the music they made and recorded. You can't take that away. He was great at NYC's Bottom Line shows.
Yes! People need to remember that we all age,, and we start aging the moment we popped outta our mom's bun - oven!!!! Fact!!! Get used to it!!!!!
Dickey is the best! ❤️🌈
Tell ya what, give the man some credit... this isn't a professional gig here.. sounds damn good for someone who hasn't played in public in a long time... rusty certainly, but great none the less!
Damn that bass player is holding down one helluva groove!!
Pedro's solid
The sound people are fuckin my hero up.You can tell it is pissing him off, everybody knows who Dickie Betts is . He was the ABB after his buddy left us
Magical.....................................
He still has a lot of gleam in his eyes, and of course he s playing well, shucks he ll be around awhile, I cant wait to see him live. Thanks.
He is now 77. Long live Dickey Betts!
Crying😢
I would love to hear Dickey do an album of Jimmy Rogers songs and have a CD of his instrumentals ...the greatest instrumental songwriter ever .......the ventures songs are very simple compared to Betts compositions which are like symphonies ...every piece fits perfectly !!
Dicky I love you, Brother. But you've gotta get off the bottle and OWN this song again.
+ritchie carrotts Dickey is 72 years old and has drunk enough beer and booze for 15 men in a lifetime and snorted up enough coke to kill most people. And he stopped playing in 2014. I think he is doing just fine here after all that. :-)
You don't know WHAT DA F***K YER TAWKIN BOUT! DUMBASS.
@@tommytroglen889 I hate these people who get so much pleasure from furthering the "legend" of Betts' lack of sobriety. Give it a rest. Please. Not only does he "OWN" this song, he wrote it and inhabits it whatever tempo or mood he decides to play it in, even when not at the top of his youthful game.
@@yvonnelaurenty6427Right!!! Most of our legends partied it up!!! Doesnt make 'em all bad!!!! We had a few beers with Dickey and Gregg and playing pool where their bus used to stop at Fatmans Pub in Gurnee il after an Alpine Valley show late 70s!!!!!!!
Dickey has traded leads on Blue Sky with many different guitarists, and he never doesn't blow the doors off whoever he's up there with. No disrespect to them, he's just ridiculous.
We never get to see entertainers. Thru out there years they change more because you only see them every five, ten or longer, and some times it can be shocking?? Richard Dickie Betts is a guitarist and was a large part of the building the Allman Brothers Band.when introduced Duane Allman referred to Dickie as the Lead Guitarist! If you have never seen Dickie Betts you are in for a treat!! I have followed these guys from the Allman Brothers up until now. I would guess in this video Dickie is or around 74,,or 78 years old,,and still bending strings!
hero dickey, keep rockin’ brother
Sehr schön wie er mit seinem Sohn zusammen spielt
Dickey and Andy 2 guitar Greats!
He makes it look easy!
great!!!!
He's playing, and that's Dickey Betts.
i was singing roll away the deww
That is so funny, I'm barley awake and that is what I thought was going on too lol
It starts off as a jam of Franklin's Tower. I have seen Dickey dedicate it to Jerry and the boys in concert
Love❤️
As a member of the old mans club,,it is very hard as we grow older to feel the bends, slides etc as you get older! I’m not saying anything negative because he is still a great great guitarist. Bending strings is too tuff for some guitarist to play Dickie Betts or Duane Allman?? I still have not seen another guitarist to bend strings as much as Dickie and Duane!! People have ask me a question that I get all the time?? How can you controll the notes on a bend??? First and always,,it’s not a note?? It is referred to as a “octive”??The note remains the same it’s the octave changes that are tuff to duplicate concert after concert! No body plays the octive as well or consistant as Richard Betts and that Red Guitar! Dickie is a generous man,but like all musicians that donot think drugs or booze is the evil you got too keep them out of your life! At the time Dickie wrote Blue Sky the Allman Brothers where into a new drug called Silly Simon. And for those who donot know??? You found a big cattle ranch and at night you pick them??? They could mostly be found growing out of Cow Dung?? Some friends in the past would gather up these Mushrooms and throw a big big party!! Serving up Silly Simon Tea!! The Allmans would receive a check from royalties from record sales,,then the manufactured drugs were purchased?? Do home work on many of these Deep South hero’s.God Bless America and her children.
The one that came to my mind is Paul Kossof of Free-- While he died young, he bents those strings too!! With plenty of vibrato!!!! I may have to switch to thinner strings!!!!! .011 and up!!!!!!!
His son looks just like him but 40 years younger.
