Just watched the twins lose to the Astros to end their season. Just so sad. They had a great season and won their first playoff game in 19 years and 1st playoff series win in 21 years. So I had to relive the 91 WS win. That cheered me up.
If only every World Series could be this great. We almost always see a few regular season role-players come up with big hits or defensive plays at this time of year, but both teams got key contributions from all over their rosters, and you had the sense as you watched that everyone on the field knew they were a part of something more special than anyone expected, as confirmed by the handshake between Lonnie Smith and Brian Harper before the first pitch of Game 7. The 1991 World Series was the ultimate case of both teams deserving to win. If Smith's baserunning lapse in Game 7 cost the Braves the series, the Twins still had to earn their victory with a heart-stopping 3-6-3 double play to finish that same inning, and also with Jack Morris going on to pitch 10 innings of shutout ball. Aside from the Game 5 blowout, nothing came easy for either team. For those who weren't fortunate enough to have caught this series in real time, pay attention to how many times the 1991 World Series- especially Game 7- is still to this day used as a point of reference for any closely-contested postseason series with a high quality of play.
Should have included the epic Knoblauch-Gagne decoy from Game 7 that faked out baserunner Lonnie Smith and preventing him from scoring on the Pendleton double. The 3-2-3 double play between Hrbek and Harper that followed was also epic.
With due respect to Buck & McCarver, it really does look like what happened in the infamous T-Rex tag is as both Gant and Hrbek describe it: Gant's momentum got tangled up with Hrbie's, Hrbie kept the tag applied while they both went off the bag. Not the cleanest out, but the right call for what happened.
@@wb8820 In which interview? Because I still can't find it. In the most recent interview I've seen, he continues to maintain that he held the tag because he knew Gant was going to fall off the bag. (My suspicion, likely, is that it was slightly assisted by the fact that he was in a huge game, still a young-ish man and pretty eager to make a big play and get his team out of the inning. Anyone who thinks this was a major cheat in the history of baseball needs to *BANG BANG BANG* *BUZZZZZZ* themselves)
Gant made two base running blunders on the play, too far off 1st and should have kept going to 2nd. Went back to 1st and didn't slide, instead went in full speed standing up.
One pundit said of the '91 Series, "It may not have been great baseball, but it was great theatre." Loved when Tom Kelly went to the mound in the ninth of game 7 and you can tell by Morris's body language that he considered that an annoyance. "Yeah, I hear you. Now give me the ball and get out of my way."
Lonnie Smith has a huge series, until he got decoyed in game 7.. What a shame.. He was on the team because of his post season experience, and in an instant it all evaporated..
I guess that it's fitting that practically the first guy to greet Dan Gladden at home plate was Jack Morris. I don't think that it's hyperbolic to say that Morris put on a tour de force performance in Game 7.
This was one of the greatest World Series ever! It was EPIC! This was back when baseball was still great! It almost felt like you were out on the field with them. One of those series’ where ‘you remember where you where.’
An amazing series and five of the seven games were one run games. It is unfortunate that Atlanta's Smoltz was pulled from game 7 as they had an amazing pitchers duel going on.
@@thomasb1889 Yes! They should have kept Smoltz in there. He was an awesome pitcher in the playoffs. Smoltz might have gone toe-to-toe with Morris the whole game - even into extra innings. That was actually a weakness the Braves had that I never noticed. They didn't have that dominant stopper in the bullpen. If they had someone like Smoltz to come and close the game, they might have won another World Series. When they brought in middle relievers and their stopper, things always felt shaky and high drama. They didn't have someone like Mariona Rivera to come in and shut down the other team. The Braves had other issues, but that was one of them. Good insights..
@@mikem591 I am from Minnesota and even I think that Smoltz should have been kept in at least until it looked like he was getting into trouble. Now for my dream series I want to see the Twins against the Brewers since they switched leagues.
