You raise some very good points, that have given us cause to reconsider our breeding plans. To be honest, we were primarily considering breeding because baby snakes are so cute. Probably not the best of reasons to bring more of them into the world. Still, with Sarge and Raymond having the genes that they do, they would be very pretty baby snakes if paired with the right females. More thought is definitely needed...

For now, it'll be just Esssequiel (that's my boy's name.)
It's been a minute since we saw Evie and Damara!! Such beautiful ladies! And those crazy little super dwarves...so distracting!! 🤣 This was a great video. I have known many people who think that the only thing they need to consider when jumping from keeping snakes to breeding them is the cost of the incubator. Space, time, and expenses are important considerations, but they aren't the only things to consider. My biggest worry is always whether or not I'd be able to handle any health concerns that might arise for the mom or babies....and since my answer is always, "I don't know..." I think I'll just stick with keeping for now. But maybe someday I'll retire from my job and just be a crazy old lady who breeds snakes for fun.
Good video! I'll put my hand up to being one of those who bought their pet off MM. Finnley is my dream color/gene/look (A black eyed Lucy), but he was also from a small breeder who handled their snakes and knew each one by name- just what I wanted! He is a sociable, curious, and utterly charming boy! (I have always wondered where all these 18-22 foot Mainland Retics end up. People actually suited and ready to wrangle a giant zoo animal cannot be that common...)
great content n points !n always fun to see your retics ..evie n damara aww love them interesting to hear that shelters sometime get bp surrenders will check on that!
I've been a snake owner, specifically ball pythons in fact, for about 15, maybe even 20 years (I forget when I got my first snake from Petco - yeah, I know... but I've grown since then and I'm a smart girl now 😇). Anyway, the husband and I decided to buy a few more this year and start breeding them and see what happens. I come from a background of horse breeding so I like to think I know a wee bit about what I'm doing, lol. Reptiles are awfully different though! Mammals are a lot more straightforward and they do all the work themselves, the only thing you have to do is introduce them. Anyway, we're concentrating on just a few morphs and have three power males: super banana cinnamon female maker, pastave enchi orange dream yellow belly, and an inferno fader, and a bunch of females in dominant and recessive morphs that will go well with the boys. We've also made friends with some bigger breeders in our area and feel like we have a few folks who can give us a hand when/if we need it. I would say thats probably the most important thing (next to actually acquiring snakes). I don't know why I'm rambling about all of this, lol... I guess I'm just tickled because its something I've considered for 15 years now and never thought I'd actually get around to doing. Like I said, we're keeping it small. We have no idea where the market will go from here so we're just going to take it one day at a time while still trying to breed really beautiful snakes with winning temperaments and hope other people enjoy them as much as we have.
@@GreenRoomPythons Thanks! 🥰 You know what definitely helped? Channels like yours. There are a quite a few really amazingly helpful people on this platform that create really thoughtful and intelligent content that are always ready to provide encouragement and advice. If it wasn't for yourself, Olympus Reptiles, Balls 2 You, BHB, Chris Hardwick, NERD, Brian Kusko, and a few others I really should include but can't remember just now, I never would have taken the leap. You fellas are absolute kings and I will definitely be recommending your content to any future buyers (should we be so lucky). 👍
There's also a lot of stress. Especially if you have babies that don't eat well and so they don't become established right away. I had my 1st clutch last year and half the clutch took a minute to get eating regularly. I still have 1 that I have to assist feed that I'm about to write off as a failure to thrive. So... yeah. Be prepared for stress and heart break. Not all babies make it. You'll have eggs that go full term and then you find that theres a stillborn inside. Or a baby with deformities, or that doest eat.
Definitely looking forward to researching carpet pythons. I got an albino darwin and i think it would be nice to pass those good genes onto the new gerneration. We tend to lose animals cuz people just stop breeding them.
Hey Bob! I got a question about my ball python. Lately he hasn’t been showing any interest in striking his food and I eventually get tired and just leave the rat on the ground. He then eats it when I leave the room and I’m just wondering why he does that. Is it just because he’s become shy or something? He usually always strikes his food but lately he hasn’t and only eats it if left on the ground by his hide.
Some snakes prefer to just eat it on their own. I have a couple snakes who do that as well. It's no problem though. I'm always just happy that they're eating.
Everyone needs to keep in mind that these are living animals. In breeding, you have to be prepared for issues. Females can get eggbound, oviducts can tear, etc. It is one thing to keep a pet, it is another to breed your animal. I've seen another breeder in a different group lose 2 girls this season that were initially bought as pets. This breeder wanted to breed her pet once and then just keep her as a pet. I am certainly not discouraging anyone from attempting to breed their animals. I just want to caution that research needs to be done and there are risks. While it is not common for females to die due to complications from being gravid, it is not so rare that it is unheard of. There are potential vet bills with being eggbound. Also keeping in mind that some morphs come associated with issues. Desert females are infertile, scaleless females have not been shown to be able to breed, a super from the spider complex (Spider complex includes genes other than spider. Spider, Champagne, woma, hidden gene woma, spotnose. These are some of the genes in the spider complex.) is lethal, etc. I am trying to keep this message in line with what Bob is saying. There is a wealth of knowledge that needs to be learned before trying to breed these animals.
This, so much this. Females aren't the only ones who can face complications either, I've heard of males going off feed due to staying in breeding mode for so long that they essentially need to be put into 'Time out' until they start eating again because they've lost too much weight, a few in my circle have also experienced breeding mode stressing out certain males to such a degree that their immune systems become compromised and they get RI's (with no husbandry changes, correct humidity, etc) As for morph issues, combo-ing spider complex genes, like Cypress spotnose, Woma champ or what have you, can produce particularly severe wobblers. And Supers of Cinnamon and Black pastel (and cinnamon/black pastel crossed) can produce severe kinking to the extent that a large % of some clutches need to be euthanised. Caramel Albino also is just rife with issues, kinking & female sub-fertility. There's also proper incubation (incubation errors can also cause kinking & jaw issues) , babies with hardbelly/umbilical cord/yolk issues, possibly babies needing assist fed. Defo a lot to learn going into it, if anyone asked I'd say to do at least a year or two of research into genetics/morphs and the general process before deciding.
I always wanted to breed just to have the experience of it and know that I did it successfully. And of course, maybe to have a snake that I made myself. Beyond that I don't think I would keep doing it just to do it. I have a couple of nice ball pythons, and there is a particular morph I would like to make. After that though I am not sure I would see a reason to continue.
That's part of the reason I want to breed hognose. Ball pythons seem over saturated. Plus, I love hognose more than anything. I don't even have a ball python but a lot of your information can be applied to hognose. Also, I just find your videos entertaining. I also think as a hognose wannabe breeder...I SHOULD add some normals to my breeding plans. I'll probably get a couple normals from my first pairing but most of mine will be Arctic, super Arctic, and conda. Plus mixes of those...
Hey Bob hope all is well you've shown me a lot and next month I get my male albino and need a name I'd like if you would help me name him I like to use and old painters name from 1800 or keep in with Greek mythology thank you so much for your info
As someone who’s been keeping royals for over a decade and going on six years of breeding (plus a MM account with 100% positive customer interactions and reviews), I respectfully disagree about the market. My peers and I have been commiserating for months over flooding and lack of sales. Even high end morphs like the ones we have available have not been selling with any kind of speed or regularity. Unless you’re already internet famous and folks want an animal specifically because it’s from you, or the off chance you’ve got something that someone’s very specifically looking for in their own projects, you’re kinda SOL for the time being. Economic depression sucks. I highly recommend no one kickstart any breeding ventures at this time unless they have the time, energy, space, funds, and other resources to treat every single hatchling as a potential holdback that can live to be over 5 feet long and 30 years old. I can’t stop anyone from doing whatever they like of course, but if you’re looking for success with sales instead of more mouths to feed, you likely won’t find it during these difficult times. Out of the 58 royals I have only 30 are intentional holdbacks and the rest are long term residents selling at a snails pace
Agreed! The market is in a downturn right now for sure. This video will live on UA-cam for years and I didn't want to make it about the current market, although I did mention that it's currently down. Regardless of the current market, ball pythons aren't becoming less popular. As the market recovers so will sales... It does suck to have to weather a slow market though.
@@GreenRoomPythons True that! Didn't think of vid longevity, I don't have the mind for content creation. Many things in life are like a pendulum... I just hope it swings to the upturn sooner rather than later. Or at least that I win some sort of lottery so I can afford more enclosures lol
It's common to breed siblings - they often breed that way in the wild. It doesn't have as much of a negative effect as it does on mammals as long as you don't do it for too many generations
I'm relatively new to snakes but I plan on breeding Corns in 2-3 years for my own curiosity. Most of the available males I've come across for my girls are het scaleless, don't know how I feel about scaleless honestly, maybe I'll warm up to them. For me it's the genetic lottery that appeals the most, I'm not interested in doing it for profit. Most late 30s women want kids or cats/dogs. I just want to watch baby snakes pip 😂
Hey Bob i saw you at the 2025 super reptile show in pomona a couple days ago. I'm the one you took a picture with by the beer vendor. My name is JJ. I have a autistic warrior who was also in our picture. We spend a lot of time watching your content while applying thing we've learned from u to our own snake keeping experience. Iwas gonna buy a snake at the expo but I actually thought it would be much cooler and a great talking point to get our next ball python from you. How can I contact you to check out some of the coolness Kent has to sale? Not u but Kent simply because he's cooler than u. No offense lol.
It was so nice to meet you guys! I'm glad we could get a picture together. I don't have any snakes available right now but I will probably in March. All my snakes go to my patreon supporters, so if you are on any of the paid tiers of the Green Room Python's patreon, you'll get an announcement when I have hatchlings and you can get on the wait list
@GreenRoomPythons that's great. I'll add myself to the patreon. Hey I have a great video idea that maybe u can touch on. Today I went I m side of my baby ball pythons cage and got an immediate scare. I noticed dozens of microscopic bugs 🐛. They were white in color. I now have two ball pythons and one mexican black king snake and have never noticed this issue before. My baby ball python is a new addition to the family. We actually got her 6 days ago. My first thought was snake mites. I immediately called the local pet shop that I got her from and explained what I was seeing. They said it didn't sound like snake mites considering the color and the fact that the bugs appeared to be jumping. I called the closest reptile store to me and they assured me the bugs were not snake mites and sounded more like a bug i should be welcoming. Turns out the eco earth substrate I placed as a under layer in my tank to hold humidity was a breeding ground for spring tails. Lol so I guess it was a pleasant scare that would not harm our buddy "calligraphy". But to a first timer experiencing this it was a questionable experience to say the least. Maybe ask our boy Kent to do a video to calm the nerves of any newbies that may not understand that different substrates come with different challenges and rewards. I have a few pics if you would like to include plus we found dozens of pictures and videos online. Keep up the great content as u are making a great difference to those of us with less experience in this reptile world.
@Ca.GunGuy yes, springtails are actually all over but most people don't notice them because they're so tiny. People often find them in their house plants. They are great to have because they eat up harmful bacteria. I actually purchased a culture of them at the reptile show today
@GreenRoomPythons wish I would have known prior to me disposing all the soil and coco bark and buying new substrate. I guess I'll call it an expensive lesson lol. But it was a sight to see them gathering inside of the water bowl. They made my skin crawl. We have actually seen them in our bathroom around the sink area. We live out in victorville there a nuisance in the restroom that we actually get sprayed for. But now I know there not as bad as we once thought. I like the eco earth soil because I've had problems keeping consistent humidity out here in the desert . I guess I'll grab another bag tomorrow
I breed but only 2 clutches a year because I want to give the adults and the babies the best care. And I only breed that what I want. And not breed a female because she can breed.
I loved ball pythons in the 5th grade, I would spend hours each day watching Bryan B and all the ball pythons and I wanted a snake so badly but I could only afford a normal, he died within 3 mo, once Bryan started doing snakebites tv and moved away from ball pythons a lot I drifted from his channel but have always loved snakes, my dream snake was an albino ball python in 5th grade but I could never afford one, I stopped being so deep into snakes from 7th-12th grade but I eventually graduated and got a job then I was like imagine having an albino ball python, I a few months later I was on creagslist and found an albino male baby and I bought him and loved him, after a month or two I realized I want to be a breeder, money wasn’t even my concern at all I just wanted to make cool snakes, banana clowns and other stuff, I eventually bought a bumblebee because I thought that would be cool to breed then I started to like recessives and wanted to do that instead, I realized why have an albino male when I can have a female and even get a better pattern too so I sold him on creagslist and was scammed with fake bills. I still wanted to be a breeder and I also bought a banana clown but as I was raising my snakes I realized UA-cam made it seem too easy and my snakes were just not getting big/thick like the UA-camrs, this made me loose hope, my bumble bee was so inconsistent in feeding and bearly gained any thickness during the two years I had her and my banana clown just didn’t really get thick but he was a better eater then her, due to the inconsistency and just seeing my snakes were not getting to the size I’d like and that UA-camrs had such thick babies and even 1 year olds, I’d just made me frustrated and give up so I gave up on my dreams of being a breeder, I really did want to do this as a passion and money would have just came with it but my damn snakes just ate like crap and didn’t get to the appropriate size for breeding. I sold the bee and clown and now I just have a piebald female and a male pastel leopard albino who I replaced for my normal albino. Now I just plan to have around maybe 4-5 snakes the most that I will keep, I am not a breeder nomore wich I honestly just wanted to make a clutch so badly but AGHH it’s so difficult to get your snakes to eat wich makes me angry. My female pied has eaten every meal since I’ve had her, I feed 1x a week, maybe the key is to feed every 5 days but I just can’t keep going to the reptile shop all the time

You'd be great at it Amy!
I think I would be too. But I need more time before I can look into breeding. For now, I'm happy to just let them be my family.
Another awesome video!! Thanks Bob ❤️
Thanks Jenny!
Glad you found your perfect snake! Yeah, a big retic is not something most pet owners are prepared to keep correctly
🙌🏼 Another great video Bob 💯 thank you 💚
Glad you liked it!
great content n points !n always fun to see your retics ..evie
n damara aww love them
interesting to hear that shelters sometime get bp surrenders
will check on that!
Yeah there are a lot of them out there, depending on your location of course
That's fantastic! Sounds like you're definitely ready!
@@GreenRoomPythons Thanks! 🥰
You know what definitely helped? Channels like yours. There are a quite a few really amazingly helpful people on this platform that create really thoughtful and intelligent content that are always ready to provide encouragement and advice. If it wasn't for yourself, Olympus Reptiles, Balls 2 You, BHB, Chris Hardwick, NERD, Brian Kusko, and a few others I really should include but can't remember just now, I never would have taken the leap. You fellas are absolute kings and I will definitely be recommending your content to any future buyers (should we be so lucky). 👍
@@katydidd6321 aw thanks so much! I appreciate that
There's also a lot of stress.
What’s an albino Darwin?

Got to many animals about 100 Ts, really want to breead my only snake ofc. But ain't gonna have space for the reac or time.
Space and time are an important consideration
I’m 1.05 into this and I’m thinking “should I breed” should have been a question asked by several of my friends parents lol 😂
1:07 1:07
It's a good question! :-)
@@GreenRoomPythons thanks a lot your the best
Agreed! Well said
This, so much this.
Females aren't the only ones who can face complications either, I've heard of males going off feed due to staying in breeding mode for so long that they essentially need to be put into 'Time out' until they start eating again because they've lost too much weight, a few in my circle have also experienced breeding mode stressing out certain males to such a degree that their immune systems become compromised and they get RI's (with no husbandry changes, correct humidity, etc)
As for morph issues, combo-ing spider complex genes, like Cypress spotnose, Woma champ or what have you, can produce particularly severe wobblers.
Does male or female make any difference on personality?
Nope, not at all
That's part of the reason I want to breed hognose.
Thanks so much, I'm glad you like the videos. Hognose snakes are really cool!
Where can someone get one of the things you use for target training?
I make my own but you can buy them at clickertraining.com I believe

Hey Bob hope all is well you've shown me a lot and next month I get my male albino and need a name I'd like if you would help me name him I like to use and old painters name from 1800 or keep in with Greek mythology thank you so much for your info
Congrats on your new snake! Luca Albino was a Italian painter born in the late 1800s. I think that's cool name :-)

Can you breed snakes if they share a father but have different females?
It's common to breed siblings - they often breed that way in the wild. It doesn't have as much of a negative effect as it does on mammals as long as you don't do it for too many generations
Congratulations on Anya, she’s beautiful! What line of Axanthic is she?
Thanks! She's VPI, pastel het pied
@Ca.GunGuy yes, you want them in your house and in the cages they are a very good little bug to have because they take care of harmful bacteria
Damara is gorgeous! I love her.
Thanks Lori, me too!
I breed but only 2 clutches a year because I want to give the adults and the babies the best care. And I only breed that what I want. And not breed a female because she can breed.
Sounds like a healthy way to do it

My female pied has eaten every meal since I’ve had her, I feed 1x a week, maybe the key is to feed every 5 days but I just can’t keep going to the reptile shop all the time
You sell snakes 😏
