Funny story about offering your hand. So I was changing my BP's water one day fairly soon after getting him. He came out to check me out. I thought "oh, neat, he's coming up to me - maybe he'll crawl up on me." Nope. He was moving very slowly and deliberately, stalking, like how he stalks feeder rodents. He took a strike pose. I didn't want to agitate him, so I balled my fist up and took the bite in between the knuckles. As soon as he hit, he recoiled and looked very confused that my fist was obviously not the meal he expected. He looked around for a bit, seemingly confused, and then backed up into his hide. I forgot I had just handled a feeder rodent box. It was the only time he's ever bitten me so far. I'm glad I was able to take it without jumping so the whole experience didn't scare him or make him nervous.
@@Ur_Local_Royale_High_Fan_Lala I wouldn't worry about it. Just do your best to not care if you get bit. It's unlikely and not all that big a deal if it does.
When you talk about short, positive interactions with your snakes, it reminds me of what Kevin from NERD calls “threads of trust”. The more positive threads, the more comfortable with you and confident in themselves they’ll be. My rescue Zeus asks to come out of his enclosure just about every night now other than feeding day and the day after or when he’s going through ecdysis. Knowing that he’s comfortable enough to want to be out exploring and interacting with me (he’ll come over and rub his head against my hand/thumb if I rest it palm up nearby) makes me feel like I’m doing things correctly and have earned his trust and that can be a hard thing to earn with a snake who is older and had to endure poor husbandry and being handled when the human wanted instead of having a choice. The Kent skits are hilarious. My brother-in-law was born in Africa and loves to joke that my python is just waiting for an opportunity to eat me 😆 Your set up is more like a breeder rather than a new owner. It might be a good idea to discuss enclosure set ups that are at chest height. Coming at a snake from above can scare them. Especially with snakes that don't have the greatest eyesight. I've had a lot of success taming my reptiles with short neutral and positive interactions that I build on until I can handle them for 15 - 30 minutes. They always let me know they are done and want to go back into their home. Also, body language like tong flicking and breathing changes are a good indicator of the animal's comfort level. If you take the time to get to know an animal by watching them and then altering your behavior to make them feel comfortable you can build a bond. Or at least the animal will understand that you aren't there to harm them. I love creators on UA-cam that share their knowledge on how to care for exotic animals.

Another slice of West Coast G.O.A.T fried gold. May I add a little something. We have daily handling/exploring sessions, except prior to and after feedings. When we check their hides for waste we always gently rub them. Some of them will even let us rub their heads while they're in their enclosures. Once out and exploring they will crawl up our arm. They all seem to enjoy their chin and cheek rubs.👍🏾🪖🦅🇺🇸
Hey man, i finally found someone who is informative and basically answers all my questions. After 12+ years my parents finally bought me my first ever snake! He’s a pastel lesser calico od yb. Quite crazy for a first snake 😅. Just wanted to ask just for quick temps, i live in Malaysia and in general the humidity is always 70+ and i used newspaper. I dont have a heating system because temps go 32C during the day and dropes to 29C at night. Half of his cage is kind of next to a window which is basically a natural way of heating. I initially was thinking a must for bedding wud be repti chip etc hut godamn sometime humidity does upto 90 sometimes 😂. Its been a week and yesterday i picked him up for the first time which he was quite tense but after a minute he started to move and flick his tongue around alot.

I have a nippy snake, it’s really when I first try and get her out of her enclosure, she spends all the time in her hide and will even strike when I’m grabbing her water or whenever my hand is in there, she has landed maybe 4 times, it’s not that bad. I will definitely try to just let her come out on her own and do some slow socializing now, before she gets too big and those bites are worse!
I've had a Kingsnake that would hiss and strike like a Bullsnake. I got bit every single time I took it out or even if I just move stuff around and it would not let go. I'm kinda glad I had that experience because now I'm less reactive to getting bit. I then learned that how you react to the snake will affect the situation and how the snake behaves after the initial take.
My BP was always in her hide so I started taking her out with a hide and I would wait patiently to see if she wanted to come out. She would usually eventually come out, check things out, then go back into hiding and I'd put her away. It payed off and now she's pretty chill about coming out to be handled and doesn't hide as much.
this is great advice for a new or even experienced snake owners time. i did exactly this with my newest baby banana, including opening the lid and just being in the room. he is now pretty comfortable around me and i bring him into the living room with me now. one thing ive noticed is he tends to try and back up a lot which makes handling difficult for a second with how hes moving. perhaps im just supporting him too far up his neck or he just isnt comfortable with where hes going. either way, socializing is very important to turn your pet into more of a member of the family! thanks for the advice bob, and congratulations on 10k!
Thanks Eric, glad you liked this one! I find that snakes back up if they don't think they can move forward either because they're blocked or scared. You might reorient him and see if that changes his direction.

The beard is definitely a pillow of DOPENESS lol. I have a new BCI & I’m implementing the sit by his enclosure without touching him method. If I pick him up it’s not to handle him but to let him explore me & around me. It’s working so far. I’ve already been struck at a couple of times before starting to do this & i haven’t been struck at since.
My best advice for both situations whether food aggressive or defensive is to touch them a little bit every time you're in the enclosure. Obviously not when feeding, and handling multiple times a week. My king snakes were the first snakes that ever bit me and my Mexican black king snake bit me for over a year. More more so food and also my Cali king anytime I handle other snakes you have to be very cautious to make sure you wash your hands and put hands sanitizer on. I heard from many people though that king snakes are more likely to buy anyways before I had this species. I never was afraid of any other animal but it's definitely working with them and now I understand them. But like I said it could happen in any time and my Cali king still musk's me when in shed. But one thing you'll never have to worry about king snakes is that they never starve like they'll literally eat during shed. And that's one thing that's a positive. You'll never waste money on food with a king snake. Even if someone else didn't eat, they'll eat. They'll be the garbage disposal. I say work with handling the top third of the body slowly like every day and that's one thing. If definitely with the food defensive snake make sure you wipe hand sanitizer, alcohol over your arms and hands, even your clothes when you handle these snakes, and three Make sure to handle every time in the enclosure. Just a little pet a touch. Make sure that they have your scent. This has worked significantly for me.but my Cali king still musk's at times not when he can see though.

That's my favorite part of owning a snake. Building a relationship with this creature that has no genetic imperative to have any relationship with anyone. It's rewarding. My carpet pythons are my favorite, whating them mellow out from baby to year one is AWESOME

This is great. My guy is still somewhat young (less than a year) and we've had him about a month. He's a little gun shy. Hasnt struck any of us and once we have him he's great, but he does tend to beat it to get away from us.
This is pretty much everything I do with my snakes and all of them will try to go on top of the enclosure when I show them “their home” they reach way up and hook the lid with their jaw and pull themselves up every time. (Front opening) mostly my boa. I have a fearful male ball pythons that did it til I started leaving him be because he stopped eating. He eats now but he gets more fearful the less I interact. I don’t want him to go off food so I keep interaction to a minimum. If I leave his doors open, he will climb out til he sees me and freezes. I’ll slowly reach behind him and just touch him. He will flinch and either make a run for where he was going or pulls back into his hide. I let him retrete back in but if he’s making a dash out, I’ll pick him up and show him “home” and he goes right in his hide. I haven’t done that in a while because he finally went back on food and I don’t wanna mess that up. He likes to stay in his warm hide even if he poops, shed’s or what not, he’s in there. So I cover the door of the hide, clean up tue other side, move stuff around (he comes out at night and checks it out) then take his warm hide and cover the enclosure til he moves to the other, cover and clean up his mess. I’ll leave and come back minutes later and he’s back in the warm hide when I was gone 🤷🏻♂️
Hey, I got good news for you. I already found my lost ball python that gone missing for 3 weeks..I don't know what happened but she just showed up in front of my cabinet. Thank you for the tips on how to find em and giving me hope that she might return one day and lo and behold she's here now...Thank you!
My baby usually stays out with me about 2 hours, when I show him his home, he'll look and then go up my arm, or sometimes he'll go inside and come back out. I guess he's an explorer lol he's in blue now, noticed when I was changing his water dish so he just hiding and drinking water.
New subscriber here! I just bought my first ball python, I´ve been reading a lot on their care and last night I set up the enclosure ready for him/her later today. This is very good information on learning how to read their body language and how to handle them. The python I picked up was the most "social" one, so I hope we will develop a good relationship

Well the worst thing that's happened to me is also the push like get away peasant. But that's mostly when he just doesn't like to come out. Because how weird it may sound when I come in and he sees me he comes to the front and I open the Terra and bam he crawls on my hand and just explores everyrhing. I really socialized him good. So good that I dare to give him to anyone with some help from me to hold him because yeah he's over 1m now (talking about Cal King) also he's 2years and 2months. I guess he's between 103-108 cm now. Let's just say 105cm.

I clicked on this because I got a pretty big tank with lots of places to climb and hide. My thing is I want to start handling him more but I don’t know if going in there and taking him out from his hide is a good idea. Naga only comes out at night so I don’t know how to approach her
I bought my second Albino Burmese Python and the owner said he was impossible to handle, so I payed a low price for a challenge. This guy came out of the bag on fire. He must have been hungry because he grabbed onto my wrist and would not let go. I gently put him and his food into a sink full of water and he let go. Then he tried to eat my finger, back into the bloody water. Cleaned him and put him into his baby bin. Little guy ate a rat right away. Named him Sunshine with optimism for his future. I have him in my kitchen where he sees me all the time. I say, "good morning Sunshine" he answers "hiss", I say" do you still love me?" "hissss". We have come a long way. I can change his water, he comes out of his hide and watches me. I think he will be more friendly before he weighs 40 pounds and does me in. Sunshine is a lifetime commitment.
I don’t know if it’s right to think about it in terms of taming vs making friends. I have been able to have interactions with wild snakes without getting any strikes and I know others have as well. Kevin McCurley has had wild rattle snakes crawl right over him. I think there is a range of anxiety in these animals. Some, even wild animals, seem to have low anxiety. With them we just follow the basic rules like not looming or reaching from above and we can get positive interactions right away. Easy friend making. Then there are the higher anxiety individuals. That’s where the threads of trust concept comes into play. I don’t think of it was taming though. I think of it as gaining their trust so we can make friends. Once they aren’t overwhelmed with anxiety, we just follow the rules and they calm down. Following the basic rules is just etiquette as far as I see it. We aren’t rude so they don’t bite. Another related idea to taming that I do see happening is domestication. I see this in burms and water monitors and ball pythons etc. It seems to me that after three or four generations they lose some of the wild edge. My ball pythons come out of the egg bereft of the balling instinct. Otherwise perfect.
Exactly, I work with snakes in the wild all the time and rarely get bit. I was working with wild Northern Emerald tree Boas in Suriname just over a month ago and was not struck at which was just due to being slow and respectful with them when handling
I do have a new ball python that has struck at me, but Im not so worried about his little teeth as his stress levels. I want him to be ok with me holding him or hanging out watching him in his enclosure... and maybe some photo shoots because he's handsome.
My son got his first BP a couple months ago and we did the hair dryer feeding trick. Good news it worked! Fun fact: now he thinks everytime he hears the hair dryer it's lunchtime 🤣

I think the biggest case in point is never to show an animal that you're afraid of them and once I became unafraid of my Mexican black king snake that's when he knew that he wasn't going to mess with me anymore, but I think they can sense fear from you. Go in there completely fearless even if you get a bite. It will help you learn, it sucks. But he hasn't bit me in eight months it's worth the time and experience. Don't give up on your snakes.
I have my new pygmy python's enclosure on a shelf next to my bed. It's just over a month old and likes to sit against the side of the enclosure and look at everything.
Guess I’ve gotten lucky. The only time I’ve had my ball pythons take a shot at me was the first day I brought them home. Hatchlings can be very defensive 😆
They just trying to get their bearings and figure out what's out there. They're picking up scent particles on the tongue and bringing it into their Jacobson's organ and that's what tells them what's around in the general vicinity.
How to tame a snake; You have to play the flute for them. But they can't tell you what music they like, so you just have to cycle through different kinds of music. The samba. R&B. Jazz. Classical. Funk. Celtic rock. And she's not vibing with any of it, and you're like "STELLLAAAAAA!" And you start to wonder if Stella the snake is just kind of a bitch, but Stella's just like "I'm sorry, I just can't get my groove back." And then you start to realize . . . You just can't play the flute so everything you play is terrible. So you learn to play the flute and try again. But Stella's still like "Nah, not feelin' you." And the moral of the story is that you can't please everyone. Sorry, I wasn't listening to the video, I just clicked on it for the cool beard.

😭 I'm scared to get bitten, not because of the bite it's self, but because I'm worried I would flinch/jump and scare him or stress him out a lot

this is great advice for a new or even experienced snake owners time. i did exactly this with my newest baby banana, including opening the lid and just being in the room. he is now pretty comfortable around me and i bring him into the living room with me now. one thing ive noticed is he tends to try and back up a lot which makes handling difficult for a second with how hes moving. perhaps im just supporting him too far up his neck or he just isnt comfortable with where hes going. either way, socializing is very important to turn your pet into more of a member of the family! thanks for the advice bob, and congratulations on 10k!

The beard is definitely a pillow of DOPENESS lol. I have a new BCI & I’m implementing the sit by his enclosure without touching him method. If I pick him up it’s not to handle him but to let him explore me & around me. It’s working so far. I’ve already been struck at a couple of times before starting to do this & i haven’t been struck at since.

My best advice for both situations whether food aggressive or defensive is to touch them a little bit every time you're in the enclosure. Obviously not when feeding, and handling multiple times a week. My king snakes were the first snakes that ever bit me and my Mexican black king snake bit me for over a year. More more so food and also my Cali king anytime I handle other snakes you have to be very cautious to make sure you wash your hands and put hands sanitizer on. I heard from many people though that king snakes are more likely to buy anyways before I had this species. I never was afraid of any other animal but it's definitely working with them and now I understand them. But like I said it could happen in any time and my Cali king still musk's me when in shed. But one thing you'll never have to worry about king snakes is that they never starve like they'll literally eat during shed. And that's one thing that's a positive. You'll never waste money on food with a king snake. Even if someone else didn't eat, they'll eat. They'll be the garbage disposal. I say work with handling the top third of the body slowly like every day and that's one thing. If definitely with the food defensive snake make sure you wipe hand sanitizer, alcohol over your arms and hands, even your clothes when you handle these snakes, and three Make sure to handle every time in the enclosure. Just a little pet a touch. Make sure that they have your scent. This has worked significantly for me.but my Cali king still musk's at times not when he can see though.

That's my favorite part of owning a snake. Building a relationship with this creature that has no genetic imperative to have any relationship with anyone. It's rewarding. My carpet pythons are my favorite, whating them mellow out from baby to year one is AWESOME

This is great. My guy is still somewhat young (less than a year) and we've had him about a month. He's a little gun shy. Hasnt struck any of us and once we have him he's great, but he does tend to beat it to get away from us.
This is pretty much everything I do with my snakes and all of them will try to go on top of the enclosure when I show them “their home” they reach way up and hook the lid with their jaw and pull themselves up every time. (Front opening) mostly my boa. I have a fearful male ball pythons that did it til I started leaving him be because he stopped eating. He eats now but he gets more fearful the less I interact. I don’t want him to go off food so I keep interaction to a minimum. If I leave his doors open, he will climb out til he sees me and freezes. I’ll slowly reach behind him and just touch him. He will flinch and either make a run for where he was going or pulls back into his hide. I let him retrete back in but if he’s making a dash out, I’ll pick him up and show him “home” and he goes right in his hide. I haven’t done that in a while because he finally went back on food and I don’t wanna mess that up. He likes to stay in his warm hide even if he poops, shed’s or what not, he’s in there. So I cover the door of the hide, clean up tue other side, move stuff around (he comes out at night and checks it out) then take his warm hide and cover the enclosure til he moves to the other, cover and clean up his mess. I’ll leave and come back minutes later and he’s back in the warm hide when I was gone 🤷🏻♂️

My baby usually stays out with me about 2 hours, when I show him his home, he'll look and then go up my arm, or sometimes he'll go inside and come back out. I guess he's an explorer lol he's in blue now, noticed when I was changing his water dish so he just hiding and drinking water.

This is very good information on learning how to read their body language and how to handle them. The python I picked up was the most "social" one, so I hope we will develop a good relationship

Well the worst thing that's happened to me is also the push like get away peasant. But that's mostly when he just doesn't like to come out. Because how weird it may sound when I come in and he sees me he comes to the front and I open the Terra and bam he crawls on my hand and just explores everyrhing. I really socialized him good. So good that I dare to give him to anyone with some help from me to hold him because yeah he's over 1m now (talking about Cal King) also he's 2years and 2months. I guess he's between 103-108 cm now. Let's just say 105cm.

I clicked on this because I got a pretty big tank with lots of places to climb and hide. My thing is I want to start handling him more but I don’t know if going in there and taking him out from his hide is a good idea. Naga only comes out at night so I don’t know how to approach her
I bought my second Albino Burmese Python and the owner said he was impossible to handle, so I payed a low price for a challenge. This guy came out of the bag on fire. He must have been hungry because he grabbed onto my wrist and would not let go. I gently put him and his food into a sink full of water and he let go. Then he tried to eat my finger, back into the bloody water. Cleaned him and put him into his baby bin. Little guy ate a rat right away. Named him Sunshine with optimism for his future. I have him in my kitchen where he sees me all the time. I say, "good morning Sunshine" he answers "hiss", I say" do you still love me?" "hissss". We have come a long way. I can change his water, he comes out of his hide and watches me. I think he will be more friendly before he weighs 40 pounds and does me in. Sunshine is a lifetime commitment.
I bet he'll become a completely chill snake once he gets some size and confidence on him :-)

I don’t know if it’s right to think about it in terms of taming vs making friends. I have been able to have interactions with wild snakes without getting any strikes and I know others have as well. Kevin McCurley has had wild rattle snakes crawl right over him. I think there is a range of anxiety in these animals. Some, even wild animals, seem to have low anxiety. With them we just follow the basic rules like not looming or reaching from above and we can get positive interactions right away. Easy friend making. Then there are the higher anxiety individuals. That’s where the threads of trust concept comes into play. I don’t think of it was taming though. I think of it as gaining their trust so we can make friends. Once they aren’t overwhelmed with anxiety, we just follow the rules and they calm down. Following the basic rules is just etiquette as far as I see it. We aren’t rude so they don’t bite. Another related idea to taming that I do see happening is domestication. I see this in burms and water monitors and ball pythons etc. It seems to me that after three or four generations they lose some of the wild edge. My ball pythons come out of the egg bereft of the balling instinct. Otherwise perfect.
Exactly, I work with snakes in the wild all the time and rarely get bit. I was working with wild Northern Emerald tree Boas in Suriname just over a month ago and was not struck at which was just due to being slow and respectful with them when handling

I do have a new ball python that has struck at me, but Im not so worried about his little teeth as his stress levels. I want him to be ok with me holding him or hanging out watching him in his enclosure... and maybe some photo shoots because he's handsome.

You do have a sick beard.
I think the biggest case in point is never to show an animal that you're afraid of them and once I became unafraid of my Mexican black king snake that's when he knew that he wasn't going to mess with me anymore, but I think they can sense fear from you. Go in there completely fearless even if you get a bite. It will help you learn, it sucks. But he hasn't bit me in eight months it's worth the time and experience. Don't give up on your snakes.
It's also a great psychological thing for the person to go in pretending like they're not afraid - It will make them actually not afraid.
I have my new pygmy python's enclosure on a shelf next to my bed. It's just over a month old and likes to sit against the side of the enclosure and look at everything.

Guess I’ve gotten lucky. The only time I’ve had my ball pythons take a shot at me was the first day I brought them home. Hatchlings can be very defensive 😆

What does rapid tongue movement mean. Quick flicks and a lot of them
They just trying to get their bearings and figure out what's out there. They're picking up scent particles on the tongue and bringing it into their Jacobson's organ and that's what tells them what's around in the general vicinity.
How to tame a snake; You have to play the flute for them. But they can't tell you what music they like, so you just have to cycle through different kinds of music. The samba. R&B. Jazz. Classical. Funk. Celtic rock. And she's not vibing with any of it, and you're like "STELLLAAAAAA!" And you start to wonder if Stella the snake is just kind of a bitch, but Stella's just like "I'm sorry, I just can't get my groove back." And then you start to realize . . . You just can't play the flute so everything you play is terrible. So you learn to play the flute and try again. But Stella's still like "Nah, not feelin' you." And the moral of the story is that you can't please everyone.
