Educational institution gives up educating US athletes and buy or hire foreign students to win more matches. Sounds like a professionals rather than amateur sports.

The ugly reality of collegiate tennis is that it is heavy skewed toward giving opportunities to international players over US players. Collegiate tennis is a non-revenue generating sport, so the only incentive to recruit internationally is to enhance the coach's job security. Understandable from a personal level, but way out of proportion to how best to serve the US taxpayer dollars that support college sports. There should be a NCAA rule of how many international players can be on a college tennis team. That would ease the pressure on the coaches as well as open up many more opportunities for US players who will remain in the US once their education and college playing days are over.

Couldn't agree more. It's really disheartening to see now and I hope it changes.

Remove scholarships for non-revenue sports and you solve the problem.

@@Angler180DC Not that simple, I'm afraid. First, there are very few scholarships available on the men's side anyway (see Title IX). Second, the stacking of tennis teams with international players creates a limited number of roster spots, whether scholarship or not, for US players. On many tennis teams the international players don't get a scholarship, per se. The attraction for them is to get into an American college, and many get financial aid that is not the same as a scholarship. The only way to prevent this obscene domination of international players filling the rosters of almost all US colleges and universities would be to limit how many non-citizen players any particular school's tennis teams can have.

The problem with foreign players can be alleviated by eliminating those who have cashed a check playing tennis.

brother the US isn't a european country that makes university for free, or spends big tax dollars on universities. Universities mostly make money from tuitions and tv deals and sponsorships through the sports teams. They aren't getting a whole lot of taxpayer money. An international kid has every right to go to college in the US and compete, with or without scholarship. And a coach has every right to recruit who he/she thinks is the best player for their needs
