Kit Coffey - Huffman is on the low end of the scheme and she has cooperated from the beginning. Some people thought parole was sufficient for her. Two weeks in prison is not a “slap in the face.” She had a clean record and is now a convicted felon. That’s huge.

Bribe the judge--> 14 days. Bribery is a federal felony; use of the mail and telephone--> mail and wire fraud. Conspiracy and accessory charges are extra crimes. A financial victim is not an element of the crimes. As for sentencing, the 14 day sentence has the appearance of judicial impropriety, when the rich parents' conduct undermines the market and exposed the bogus nature of the fantasy of a meritocracy. The prosecutors should charge the crime, the conspiracy, the accessory after, the wire/mail fraud, and the judge should impose obstruction enhancements to the penalties for not pleading guilty to encourage the accused brokers and University officials to give up the historic network of fraudulent admissions and fraudulent degrees.

Who cares?! "Legacy" students have been getting into ivy league schools, based entirely on their family history with that school, and the "contributions" made by those old-money families. There is no substantial difference between the actions Ms Huffman and the others took, and the set asides for old money family's at Harvard, Yale, etc. In both cases, admittance is based upon who you are, not what you know. The real victims are the countless numbers of Americans who must go into lifelong debt in order to obtain a profession. I do not care how the wealthy and privileged get their kids educated. It is unworthy of our attention as it is all too common and will not stop. Lets fight for tuition free college and technical training for all Americans.

    • @tmayofour
      @tmayofour 5 років тому

@Kai Evans Then my point holds. If you want to punish privileged parents who buy their children's way into school, that would be a significant chunk of old money ivy league people. The situations are identical. But to my original point, this is not news and does not matter. News is runaway student debt. News is the rise of hate groups on college campuses. News is we live in the wealthiest nation on Earth and do not provide tuition free college education. News is that too many people have no health coverage. News would be a policy to cancel ALL student debt. News EMPHATICALLY IS NOT wealthy people doing what wealthy people always do. And if im honest with myself, were i a wealthy parent it is quite likely that i may have taken similar actions on behalf of my child. But the underlying problem here is the inordinate amount of attention these essentially amateurist and ultimately unsuccessful schemes receive even now! We have bigger things to worry about.

Our "poor" two children had to earn university admission on their own merit.
Our daughter graduated UW-MADISON two years ago. Our son is a senior at UW-EAU CLAIRE.
    Cross our fingers......
Good kids, no issues, drugs or drinking.
Last March my son turned 21 and waited for me to come up for a campus visit to have his first 21"bar" drink! He's "mr. super straight"............It's hard for us to deal with the high standards to which he ascribes. We must have done something really weird to have our children turn out in such a manner.

It s a shame that 100 of thousands of dollars were spent for admission to USC. I am not sure how I feel about this. These kids had so many more advantages than probably 90% of other kids. Their parents seem very insecure regarding their children. Wonder how it affected these kids self esteem. Damn shame.

The US legal system is freakishly lopsided in that doesn't necessarily play by what most people think is the system, but is a plea bargain based system. Take a deal or get smacked down. Laughlin, however, is not a victim, but a criminal and she and her husband (as well as the rest of those indicted) should be well rewarded a sentence that sends a message to all others to not try this disgusting attempt of circumventing the college enrollment system.

When Huffman was given ONLY 2 weeks my initial feelings were: Well if Huffman had such a light sentence then chances are that Loughlin will be given a light sentence as well. They build all of this up. Oh the shame of it! To turn around and barely slap the hand of Huffman. It goes to follow that as big as this thing is, Laughlin won't get the sentence she deserves. I think these are just fear tactics. There must be some reason Laughlin is holding out. If she gets a light sentence then she'd better change her identity. She is the poster child of the person one loves to hate.

THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A LONG TIME.
I left the comfort of my S. Father Bruce, home...at the age of 15-16 Yrs. old.
I had three jobs, I went to summer school, to get as many credits as I could...out of the way, so I could work longer hours.
My senior year, I had a part-time job before school, went to night school and worked nights at a department store and retirement center.
And sold hand bags at fleamarket‘s on the weekends.
    Graduated with a 70-72 % Grade average.
I couldn’t afford the cap and gown to walk down the aisle to graduate.
My Best Friend, Lesley, Convinced me, that it wasn’t a big deal for her to walk down the aisle (as it was for me)
She gave me HER, Cap and gown!…Walking down my high school graduation aisle...was one of the proudest moments of my life.
**Before walking down the aisle I turned around and saw a friend slip in behind me...I knew my friend did not graduate. It didn’t bother me because I knew her parents, as she told me, gave a generous donation to our school. She was a smart girl, she just had better things to do... She went on to become a pillar of our community** PeaCe&ReSPeCt, ShelleBelle

Regardless of guilt, the treatment of this should be scary to all citizens. It smites of the use of the rack. They stretch you and say plead guilty. You say I am innocent they stretch you more and then say are you sure you still want to plead innocent ? You say yes, I am innocent and they ratchet it more. Since when in America do we prove guilt in a crime not by evidence but by threat of more criminal charges. How does adding another charge prove the previous. So now we have guilt by intimidation?
