    Seen from Italy, this looks a little excessive. It's true that Italian organized crime dominates narcotraffic, which is a huge source of revenue. It's also true that they are very globalized now. But, except for a few selected areas, their penetration inside Italian society is not what it use to be. Loan sharking, protection rackets, and the like are not anywhere close as pervasive as they were in the '70s and '80s. The days were citizens would go to the local mafioso asking for a favor are past. If you are looking for a reason for Italy's economic stagnation, demography, high taxes, a slow and inefficient judicial system, and byzantine red tape, are a more likely culprit.

    For example, approve a law that separates investing and managing a private company. The original founder of the company could accept a new member, but there should be a delay of 10 years and there should be exclusive choices betweeen being part of the management OR invest funds. That would at least loose 10 years to the mafias, with the correspond inflation.

    No mafias are not as powerful as they were until mid 90s (if you wanna know the partial reason for that, search info about the infamous "state-mafia pact"). The elephant in the room that this video doesn't address is that mafias have been a tool for politics to control people since the foundation of Italy in 1861. If mafia is allowed to exist and invest in legit business (but without paying taxes) in economically depressed regions with astonishing unemployment, people develop loyalty to the boss instead then politics because "Mafia gives us a decent job, the state only oppressed us". As of today, destroy mafia has been removed from political agenda of every party and the south is receiving less and less money from a north-driven government

    Italy is probably the only country that has specific laws capable of tackling mafia-style organized crime. However, with global financial markets, it is not too difficult to clean money abroad (investing even large amount of cash in countries like US is not deeply scrutinized) and reinvest it legally into the North of Italy (I'd be curious to find the roots of some foreign investments) and the rest of Europe. I'd suggest to abolish cash and create a legal currency linked nominally to the owner.

      The military isn't going to do shit. There's no mafia army to fight against.
      There's just thousands of ordinary citizens with ordinary jobs and lives, who sometimes happen to collaborate with the mafias.
      The standard anti-mafia tactic is just: follow the money and arrest the big fish.
      And the best anti-mafia strategy for a State is: take care of your citizens, so that mafias won't take care of them in your place.

    The Italian mafia is largely localized in terms of organized crime.
    The real threat in Europe comes from Balkan mafia groups. Serb and Albanian groupings in particular, although they tend to be multi national. Largest importers of cocaine, marijuana and heroin.
    Important players in illegal weapon smuggling with even links to Terrorism, and in ISIL in particular. It goes back to a 1970's and 80's project of the Communist governments simply... exporting the problem away, offering them a strong foothold in central, western Europe and Scandinavia. A particularly brutal Mafia war saw close to 15 public executions last year across Europe...

    3:54 I think is not a case that speaking about Mafia, the Unicredit's CEO (Unicredit is one of the most powerful bank in Europe, even more solid than Deutsche Bank) was spotted. • @SimoCalandra
      @SimoCalandra 5 місяців тому +1

      Mussolini did that and he succeeded. Mafia was an obstacle to his plans so he decided to kill or jail anyone that was associated or simply suspected to be associated with any crime family. Then, Italy lost the war (see the historical details on Allied invasion of Sicily, operation Husky and the involvement of the CIA for reference) and the "Mafiosi" had handed control of several local governments. In short, these events influenced the course of Italy as a Republic, "free" of fascism but with plenty of criminals at all levels of governments. Since then, Italy has never been free of corrupt politicians. So we escaped the fascist regime and replaced it with a decentralized criminal organisation instead. Please do not think that I am a fan of Mussolini but historically that was the period where the Mafia was at his lowest point. The criminals were running away not to get caught and this pretty much is the moment where the Mafia also arrived in the US.

    • @nkristianschmidt
      @nkristianschmidt 5 місяців тому +1

      @@SimoCalandra Neither approach gets rid of it, but El Salvador has done well so far. Now it's just covert rather than overt. Getting rid of crime requires a pervasive and constant pressure against crime, either via a powerful state and surveilance, or via a strong and armed societal culture.

    • @SimoCalandra
      @SimoCalandra 5 місяців тому

      @@nkristianschmidt Of course - unfortunately in Italy many cities (especially in the South) do not have enough policing so they fail to provide that constant pressure which you have rightfully identified as a necessaty to be able to "fight"... Also, because of that ever presence of corrupted institutions and politicians, the laws in Italy are not efficient either. Just picture this: The Italian parliament is made of several politician that are either being investigated or are currently investigated for various level involvement with criminal organizations. So, as you can imagine, the giustice system remains influenced by politicians that push against improving the laws in such a way that could make the "clean-up" efforts more efficient. These politicians receive votes that are "acquired" the mafia in exchange of favours, job promises, money, etc...) Anyway, there is so much that could be added to this conversation. Italy has a very complicated history - you would say "who doesn't?" and I would agree.

At the end of the process, when a municipality is liberated or a business is cleaned up in the rare cases where the old owner comes out clean Is the market ruined due to the negative publicity in the newspapers and where does the business remain but all the people go to prison? The business remained closed for decades before being given to a Social cooperative.
