I am 70 years old, retired, and am taking piano lessons again. Rachmaninoff is my absolute favorite composer. I am learning piano solo music of this piano concerto now. I personally believe this piano concerto is the most inspirational and powerful music ever written for the piano. It always deeply touches my heart when listening to or playing this music. Rachmaninoff was truly inspired. I feel a spiritual connection to Rachmaninoff because of his music.
I'm 34 years old. I sincerely wish you inspiration, strength and patience. And I wish you to play this work for your close people, and maybe people you don’t know well. I wish you to convey this love for music, so that you introduce this masterpiece to other people. I wish you good health. With great respect and love from Russia. Sorry for my English.
I'm also retired and 12 days from 70. Just bought a piano. I started playing the accordion at age 6 so my right hand is way ahead of my left hand as the Italian style accordion has buttons on that side. If I I live to 120 and practice 10 hours a day, I MIGHT be able to play this piece. Nah! Probably not.
To me, 2nd movement is always like what it feels like to visit a friend's grave. You are alive, they aren't, yet the universe is better because of the time that they were with you. Fragility, openness, and reminiscence. how romantic..
Marvelous...!!! Absolutely great ! It's a real piece of art. A fantastic performance. Thanks Sergei Rachmaninoff, EuroArtsChannel, Maestro Yuri Temirkanov, Orchestra, and this stunning pianist, Denis Matsuev.
5:29 Space........Planets.....Stars.....Galaxies.... Wow, it gives me goosebumps. This slow arpeggio section is the "Celestial Bliss" section. This is the best concerto in the world!
I discovered this symphony as a kid. My dad really liked it. I hung out at the local AM radio station and in the early 1970's got the chance to play this on the radio during our weekly Sunday night classical music show. This was Vero Beach, Florida 1973. A great time and I just will never forget!
My praise goes here to that wonderful orchestra and Maestro Termikanov. What a noble, gentle and soothing sound - you just can't find it elsewhere easily!
I first heard this music in the film "Brief Encounter", an English movie from 1945. Anytime i heard it over the years it grabbed my heart!! Then by pure luck I came across this performance which brings tears to my eyes it is so beautiful. What makes it so is surely the incredible powerful playing of Denis Metsuev and the smooth touching conducting of Yuri Ternirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. .Since I live in the US in the state of New Mexico and am currently suffering under the Presidential horror of Donald Trump whenever politicians mention "the Russians" I will always picture this group of outstanding talented Russian musicians and the fabulous creations of Rachmaninoff. I thank you with all my heart for giving me the gift of your music. Barbara Earley
I think Matsuev is among the best piano players in the world and I have not any one except may be Rachmaninoff play Piano Concerto No.2 as good as he does.
wish we had this tradition of offering flowers (puja) at the end of concerts. i always feel in small towns like san diego that the artists come all the way to the corner of the country, play their hearts out, sure they get paid and applause, but its such nice touch...
FELICITACIONES Y MAS EXITOS!
I absolutely adore how he represents the emotions here -so much hidden tension and emotions that bubbles on the top and goes deep deep . I like it better even than the recording of Rachmaninov himself playing it. :)
3:40 It hurt me when the orchestra interpreted the crescendo hit as a whimsical wisp. I appreciate the variation, the momentous thud was just one of my favourite points.
What is he doing at 33:01? This does not sound like the written, descending chords progression, sounds more chromatic than the original! Or is it only the power of his playing? Very convincing however; emits such a powerful roar on the way to the final chords! AMAZING, Denis ❣️
Unbelievable control. With a sense of humour. Btw, Richter rated Yamahas as the best pianos...!! I would love to hear him perform Prokofiev 2 - so few good recordings...
It's a spirit, bro. Give to the Russians a pen, a violin, a plow, or a gun, they would do the things that would amaze the whole world. God saves Russia.
This was performed in a church! What a fitting place to come to "worship" at the altar of Rachmaninoff. __JJ Townley (also a composer of a neo-Romantic Piano Concerto No 2 in C Minor here on YT)
It is interesting to read about different conventions over time, or between places, about not applauding between movements. It is not something that's so 'obvious' -- compared with say not talking during a performance, which would tend to be better understood as a social convention. It's an argument that seems to have been going on for decades. Being aware of the situation, if a performer/conductor/orchestra really feels strongly about it, then announce it at the start. Or have people holding up boards with 'QUIET', 'CLAP NOW', 'CHEER', etc. -- now that would be a sight
David Span I have attended Wed night Wine & Music symphony perf. where they DO explain to a more casual audience that there are 3 movements, etc...& that they appreciate the applause...but please hold until end of 3rd...which works beautifully for those unfamiliar or who do not look at a program...
Also recently attended a perf. W/the Philadelphia orch. & Y. Nezet-Seguin where he DID put out 'the hand' to stop the beginning of applause after 1st movement...it makes me tense all the way through 1st movemnt just anticipating the potential applause...how nice to be able to just relax & know it wasn't going to happen!!
@@barbavassilis Well, quite a few of the audience did clap. I was also referring to debate in more recent times. Maybe if it was a condition of purchasing a ticket (and the punishment is being thrown out or black-listed-- now that would be a sight). I like this bit from an article on classicfm.com: "But if you can’t help bursting into spontaneous applause after the epic crescendo at the end of the first movement of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 (and who could blame you!), ignore the disapproving tuts and go for it."

There is an elf in orchestra, playing horn, and this is best interpretation i have ever heard, every note has a own meaning.
