Nice pruning on the hibiscus. Bringing out more trees. I guess we are on the same wavelength. I have more to take out also and out of the microclimate. Always things to do with our bonsai trees.
Rewarding and instructive to watch the development of this tree since 2016 (when I started watching). Looking forward to see how the canopy shapes up after today's trimmings.
Great Hibiscus, and good branch choices for the rest of the growing season. My Rose of Sharon, a relative of the Hibiscus, is due for defoliation and branch selection later this month. If all goes well, it should bloom late August, early September. Can’t wait to see it blossom.
Nice hibiscus! You've inspired me to try a couple of mine as bonsai. (I take cuttings from some of the variegated leaf varieties in my yard. Thanks for the inspiration.
Looking great and guess it is time to prune my own fairly large hibiscus that finally adapted to bonsai soil (about 22+ yrs old) given to me just a couple years ago as an ugly but nicely gnarly houseplant. Thanks for a good video and inspiration.
Hey Saunders I like ur work and your dedication on plants , your vid helps us a lot and informative, (But I think u must prune your hair’s and give it a nice shape with the help of wire if needed) you really need to think on this topic bro
Question for you. That branch at 3:53. Why would you want to keep that branch? I look at it and think it's got little taper and looks much heavier in the branching structure vs the rest. It's also pretty straight and divides closer to the junction then the rest of the branches. The branch behind it has better taper, movement and potential to be the new leader for the tree. Not a criticism in anyway just want to learn the best I can. Thanks in advance.
I'm not sure which branch you mean, at 3:53 I'm cleaning up a stub at the end of the branch. If this is the branch you mean, it gives the canopy a nice spread, creating an umbrella crown.
@Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone that is indeed the branch I was talking about thank you for the answer it definitely makes sense now that I read that and looked at it again.
Looks cool, but why not grow a sacrificial branch on the lowest branch and let it grow without pruning so that it looks proportionate to the upper branches? The upper branches are very thick compared to the lower branch, which is not very believable.
It's very common for a tree to have a small branch at the base and all the vigor goes up to the top of the tree. I don't think it makes it unbelievable.
I love the trunk texture on the Hibiscus!
Now I want a hibicus.Very nice Nigel😍🌳
Looking great Nigel, boy has this thing come a long way! Great work Nigel, THANKS!!
nigel thank you so much for sharing all your know-how over the years. beautiful tree
That hibiscus is fantastic! Love the trunk texture!
Looking really good now Nigel - Some big cuts and big decisions made today all for the best id say!!
Oh and congratulations on going over 200K!!!!
This reminds me that I get to thin out my hibiscus bush this week, to strike some cuttings.
Thank you!
Hey Nigel! Your hibiscus looks great! I can't wait for mine to (hopefully) bounce back after the intense heat, your trees are such an inspiration 😊🌱

Wouldn’t you normally let it grow out more before pruning to let it gain more vigor? Or is this species vigorous enough

How old is this Hibiscus? It makes me want to start one but I don’t think I’ll have inside space for it over winter. :(
It's getting old, about 25 years now I think?
