I Built a Violin (in my Airbnb)

- For the next few months, I'll be living in London. The thing about taking long trips is that at some point you start to miss your physical instruments. In particular, I found myself missing the violin I had to leave back in Philadelphia. The solution? My solution was to build a new violin right here in my Airbnb!
PROJECT NOTES
Here are the things that went well:
- I made a playable violin
- It turns out ukulele machine heads really well with violin strings
- It turns out that a violin neck doesn't need to be rounded in order to be playable
- I'm very happy with all of the hardware I ordered, including the cheap bow which was much better than expected
Here are the things that I would do differently:
- The wood I choose is too thick (6mm). Also: even though it's hardwood, I don't know exactly what wood it is. If I had it to do over, I would make sure to get thin pieces of spruce.
- I designed the neck to be exactly parallel with the body of the instrument. I didn't expect how much the tension of the strings would change the position of the neck. I ended up making the bridge much lower than I otherwise would have to compensate
- The hole I drilled for the endpin / button at the bottom was too big and I ended up having to glue
Here's a list of all of the parts I ordered:
- Violin Fingerboard (£6.41): www.amazon.co....
- Andoer® 4/4 Violin Accessory Kit (£8.50): www.amazon.co....
- Adagio Pro - Violin Strings (£6.99): www.amazon.co....
- Hidersine Teller Violin Bridge (£5.68): www.amazon.co....
- BQLZR Machine Head Tuners For Ukulele (£5.17): www.amazon.co....
- Rosin (£2.75): www.amazon.co....
- Theodore 4/4 Standard Violin Bow (£9.95): www.amazon.co....

Anyone who is gifted at a craft respects someone doing something with no tools and pulling it out.
I would be amazed you did that with a saw in a hotel room.
You absolute madman, that's amazing.
A tip for box fiddles that I've found. You don't have to put in the cutouts if you build a nice extra tall bridge. If you use really good wood, you can get it thin enough and with enough decorative holes that it won't sap the sound from the extra length that the vibrations have to travel trough. You can even get a whole 5 strings fully playable without any cutouts using this method.
How are you not more popular?!!???!! You can save thousands of dollars by doing this... ive been wanting to play strings for a while but the price had always stopped me from getting one.. now, i can fulfill my dream and keep my money!! thanks!
"I want a hardwood. Preferably maple or spruce". That's like saying "I want to eat a fruit, Preferably an apple or a chocolate bar."
It’s true. Spruce is definitely not a hardwood. :)
I have definitely felt that way lol chocolate usually wins 🍫
Again, super impressed by your skills! Best of luck in London, hope you find what you're looking for!
Great job!
Seeing you smile makes me happy, thanks.
I actually love the tinny sound of it, well done :D
It gives a sort of, homely humble feel and sound.
You are a fascinating man, Mr. Hilowitz.
I like this channel very much
Cool... welcome to the UK
Excellent ! Enjoy your stay in London
haha! better than no violin ... much better, actually! It's a violin!!! You did it! And it beats air violin. Now you can play! :D
And if it breaks you can fix it without worrying to much about if it will look like when it was new, like a "proper" violin costing $$$.
Splendid ...
Loved it, It made me think of doing a electric cello using the same practice!
What constitutes a violin is the hardware and strings/bow. The box matters only when you want a fine sound as it resonates.
that is sooo cute! found myself smiling when you start to play. good job, David!
WOW!! You could totally perfect this thing -- work on different models, tweak the sound and patent it. It's sort of shaped like an H which is great because your last name begins with that letter. The Hilowitz fiddle!
Amazing nicely done!
That's mad. Truly inspiring
wow very ingenuous. Thank you.
Bravo!
Beautiful
What why does this only have 16k views
Great work.
Very nice!
I love him he so optimistic 😂
Wow David, I really admire your ingenuity and your quick-wit. Designing a violin in a CAD app and actually building it from scratch as if it was nothing? And it sounds really good!
Since you plan to sample it, will you make an SFZ version of it available (or alternatively make the audio files available for mapping, since the Kontakt .nki files do not always allow access to the contained audio files...)?
I will definitely make an SFZ version.
That is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hey i totally love your project and for my physics class we are making instruments and you’ve had the best video so far, so you think we could get the measurements of your pieces ?
Nice work, but why didnt you sand the sides before gluing the back and top?
And why not F holes?
I built an electric mandolin with exactly the same shape. Check it out on Amateur Luthier.
I do sort of wish I had sanded it more. I still might if I can convince myself to stop playing it. ;)
So I didn't end up doing f-holes, but I did end up drilling some soundholes. I shot the demo footage before I drilled them, though.
Nice!!
A cubist violin 😀
Question: there're no f, how do you put the sound post (not sure if it's the correct word, in French it's called l'âme, the soul). Maybe you didn't put a sound post?
You are right, it is called a Sound Post. From his CAD design, it doesn't look like he added one, but I could be wrong.
do you have the specific measurements of the cuts or no?
What would you get if crossed violin with a banjo
Does your box violin work without a mic attached to it? What is the wire attached to the violin?
no sound-post?
you forgot a bass bar
!!
Sir why no sound post
if ted Kaczynski was a musician
Nice. Why no f holes?
So I did end up adding some round sound holes, but it was after I shot the video. :)
@@DavidHilowitzMusic How did that affect the sound? Thanks!
Heads up, proper pronunciation of "ukulele" is like "oo-koo-lay-lay" not "YOU-kuh-lay-lee".

The Department of Transportation (DOT) on Tuesday implemented a statute that requires airlines to permit passengers to carry small instruments such as violins, violas and guitars as carry-on luggage, provided the instruments can be stowed safely in overhead compartments or under seats.Jan 1, 2015
Why didn’t you just take your violin
