  • In this lesson I am going to explain you why there are German adjective endings, when you will need to use them and how you have to use them. AND a special long bonus tip this time where I explain the entire concept behind the adjective endings. There is actually a system... 😀
    Here the time stamps:
    0:00 Intro
1:14 When you have to decline an adjective?
    2:32 What affects the ending?
3:05 German adjective endings in nominative
    4:45 Examples
8:26 The system of adjective endings explained
    12:30 Bonus Tip 2: Negativ- & Possessivartikel
In this video we only discuss the German adjective endings in nominative. In German we call it: Adjektivdeklination im Nominativ. You might have seen this in your textbook.
In the following lessons I am going to explain you the declension of German adjectives in Akkusativ, Dativ and Genitiv. But for now, lets concentrate on nominative and get it right from the beginning. Once you memorized the nominative endings, all other cases will be much easier to learn and understand.
    Viel Spaß und bis bald

In my Bonus Tip (Minute 8:26) I try to explain the system of German adjective endings.
Please let me know if it was explained way too complicated and absolutely not understandable... then I will try again... ;)
    Danke!!!

Watch and rewatch, if and when you can. Try listening on your commute, cooking, or while you work. It’s augments like that, which manifests fluency and understanding. One strange, yet enjoyable possible side-effect, I’ve noticed in myself: you’ll notice German flavoring and tendencies in your native language.

Very interesting to see from a native speakers perspective. It makes you understand why people find it hard to learn German.
I would add to your rule at 2:02 that there are some rare exceptions. For example: "Das Auto ist ein altes." (The car is an old one). If you stumble upon something like that, don't be confused. It's usually just a stylistic choice of the author.

Thanks again for this video, you managed always to make simple what is difficult to understand. Very well done and you really deserve all the best and I hope you be rewarded the soonest.
I have one remark when it come comes to the translation of the sentence (7:20 min):
Das kaputtes Handy ist jetzt viel billiger --------- The broken cell phone is not cheap
    The translation should be as:
The broken cell phone is now much cheaper
    I
I am sure , it was a typo issue. Please continue to make videos because we are just enjoing them a lot :)

Tausend Dank! I am so happy that i now understand how these are formed. I had some understanding, but i was still rather confused as to when to use these endings. I always come to your videos because you explain these so well and in simple matter and not overcomplicating as it can be with other teachers/people and books. I wanted to have a clearer understanding before my B1-Prüfung as I don't want to guess the endings (I still find Akk und Dativ hard - not only with the adj-endungen but with the prepöstitionen only sometimes with writing and speaking but I think it all comes down to concentration) Vielen Dank Luzi!

    • @yourgermanteacher
      @yourgermanteacher  3 роки тому +6

      vielen dank!!! 👍😊
if you have a sentence with a definite article then the adjective gets a weak ending which is either “e” or “en”.
but if u have a indefinite article then it needs a strong ending “-er”, “es”, “e”, “en” and “em” (depending on the case). but i will explain this in every video for every case. so hopefully at the end it will be more clear. ;)

what is the system of weak endings?:
why ein has weak ending "-e"?
    in another way,
    What is the system of
    -e
    -e
    -e
    -en
    with der die das die.
From where these weak ending comming?
For der die das die has simple,
    "Last letters are stong ending"
But how to systemize for weak endings?

  • @marecku21

I have a suggestion to make about explaining the grammar regarding adjective endings. Although I know that the weak/strong ending distinction is the standard way of describing them, I have always found the terminology rather confusing. There are two reasons: 1) there is nothing inherently strong or weak in an ending (at least not that I know of), and 2) in some contexts the "e" ending is described as "weak" (e.g., der altE Mann) , but in others as "strong" (e.g., die altE Frau). It seems to me that the distinction is really that the definite articles sufficiently indicate the gender while the indefinite ones do not, so that you need a "strong" ending to indicate the gender (e.g., ein altER Mann, ein kleinES Madchen). So it makes more sense for me to think of this in terms of needing, either with the ending of the article or the ending of the adjective, to indicate the gender. Am I correct about that or confused?

    • @yourgermanteacher
      @yourgermanteacher  3 роки тому +2

yes its not wrong. but sometimes you also have indefinite articles which indicate the gender and have already the strong ending:
      einE kleine Flasche
      mit eineM neuen Buch
      für eineN guten Zweck
therefore i think its an easier strategy. but at the end you need to make it right. how you learn it or memorize it is not important. 😊👍

Thanks for that opinión it Made me laugh , But on a seriös Note i trink is so difficult that it takes a Special Person like This Professor to give us the „you can do it“ Message with his beautiful explanations. I have been trying to learn it since 10 years ago. Not steadily though I got discouraged a lot in the process.🙋🏽‍♀️👍

I really love the way you think about what we (your viewers and students) could possibly ask. Then you add material without being condescending so that the dumbest of us(myself included here) can say; "Ah! I never thought of that, but now it makes sense! " Why Nominativ? Because your describing the subject and the subject is Always! in the Nominativ case. Thank you. Another part of brain that has just relaxed also says thank you ❤️for freeing up the memory for other German things. 👏👏👏
