Just gotta say, i love your youthful energy Prof. And the fact that you seem to be able to vibe with just about anyone on your show. It also sets an absolutely stellar example of what the MTG community can be like.
It's especially great coming from a Yugioh player. Sometimes they get themselves out of tight spots by reading their cards and discovering effects they never noticed before, just because the text boxes are stuffed with so many words that are unrelated to their strategies.

Paul tapping the Haruspex was incredible for a newer player -- Much respect. When an experienced player just talks about what the card does and what happens, it's easy to forget your stuff!
Something that helped me as a Yugioh player going into MtG was the mentality that, unless stated otherwise (sorcery, tapped creature etc for example), effects are all Quick Effects in MtG.
Honestly, as a YGO player and a new MTG player that played over a decade ago, it’s something that even now, I could see myself forgetting the effect in a more High Power/cEDH setting with numerous triggers. Fortunately, it happened in a relatively fresh board state.
As a long time MTG player, I had the biggest grin seeing Paul use Haruspex’s ability to survive the board wipe. Sometimes newer players don’t really like taking counters off their creatures to get other benefits (the same can be said for sacrificing/aristocrats playstyles). I don’t know exactly how much Magic Paul has played since he got introduced to the game but it’s so cool that he knows everything in the game can be used as a resource! EDIT: And he likes green! And as a fellow green player I automatically love anyone who loves playing big dumb stompy
I want to believe that Professor realized that beforehand and wanted to give that "reward" with his decision to sweep the board. Anyway that was super cool big brain moment from Paul plying game he does not play.
Some really impressive stuff here coming from new players. Understanding the trample & deathtouch interaction, removing Slicer with the legend rule, saving a creature from a boardwipe by reducing its power in response. i am not quite sure but since the original slicer couldnt be sacrificed on his turn by its own effect wouldnt he have had to sacrifice the copy of it instead?
@serax37 So the important thing to know about the legend rule is that you aren't sacrificing anything. You're just choosing one to put in the graveyard as a state based action. "Can't be sacrificed" has no interaction with the legend rule
Man, it feels *so* good when you get that 1/100 take-off play. I had one not long ago where I played against my father. Drew my 7 and told him I didn't think he could win. Mountain into sol ring into arcane signet. Turn 2 assemble the legion plus a soldier I forget. had him dead on turn 5 with every creature gaining double strike and only that because of interference. I truly hope there's more shuffle up and play commander episodes with Team APS. They are my favorite yugioh channel and this episode was just great. Truly a masterpiece
Just want to expand on the Legend Rule interaction with Slicer / Sculpting Steel, in case anyone is confused: It DOES work that way, inspite of Slicer stating you cannot sacrifice him, because the Legend Rule isn't technically a sacrifice - it is a state-based zone change of a permanent. It's hyper specific, and looks and functions almost exactly like a sacrifice, but is not in fact a sacrifice. So good play there, very clean way to answer the cEDH car of doom.
I love how much slower this game was and the detail you guys put into explaining certain cards or functions. Great vid for entry level players to learn
I have never played MtG, and I haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh in a VERY long time, but that was one of the most entertaining card games I've watched. Such a great game mode to not only allow your knowledge bits, but to also allow the back and forth banter from all four of you. MORE, PLEASE!
I have almost 0 interest in yugioh but I'm a huge fan of the content these guys make on their channel. Kudos to Prof, hope we get to see more of them here!
This is the first episode of anybody else playing Commander I've ever actually watched. You guys did amazing. And I really enjoy watching novices learn the game as they play. It really feels like I'm playing with real people. I hate when people are playing with $1,000 decks, the average man can't afford that. I like what you guys are doing. Keep it up
I love these Cross overs and think that the TCG space needs more of this kind of community interactions. It would help both sides grow and it’s just generally really fun to watch so thanks for this treat.
Absolutely love this little cross over, I've watched Team APS for a while as I myself am a yugioh player who got sucked into trying MTG and fell in love with the game from then on! Would love to see more MTG videos with Team Aps im interested to see what builds they can come up with once they get more knowledge of the game.
Team APS is what got me back into Yu-Gi-Oh!, and they're how I found this channel and got into Magic. They've definitely connected/reconnected me to cardboard and I love it!
now let's be honest folks. I really wouldn't necessarily describe the professor as one of the best. board wiping multiple times like that and one game is definitely a bad move.
@@joeysteel1864 if I were in the situation? and I have been in this situation before. I simply would not have played the card. I would buy my time and wait it out, until I could draw into something. sometimes, just because you had the cards in hand, doesn't mean you should play them.
@@unanon_user I think they just meant as far as content creators go. We all know Prof isn't a pro caliber player, himself included, but that doesn't preclude one from being entertaining to play with and watch.
This was such a fun episode, I had a an enormous smile throughout. These yugioh players are surprisingly very adept to MTG, I thought that they all played their hands very well especially the Dogmeat player. I would really like to see them in future episodes, perhaps invite them down separately one at a time next with your other guests? Really fun episode, thanks for the smiles.
The base card for Samwise Gamgee does include the reminder text for both Food tokens and Historic permanents. It's the showcase and extended arts that they usually remove the reminder text from for aesthetic reasons. Keeping a copy of the base cards in your deck (or a proxy with the reminder text) nearby for people to read can go a long way to clearing up confusion while also allowing you to bling out your deck.
As someone who got into commander thanks to the likes of this channel and command zone. Seeing all new players use the universe beyond precons i think speaks volumes to the beauty of why we love commander. We just play stuff we like or we expect or want to be to our skill set and i think thats an amazing aspect of commander.
Not gonna lie, I really now want to see Team APS play Domain Format of Yugioh. And maybe slip into a bonus episode of Shuffle Up and Play. It's literally Yugioh commander.
Seeing this brought back so many memories. Back In the day I would play Yugioh with my two best friends but because there was three of us one person was always left out so we developed a commander for Yugioh and called it Yugioh Free-For-All. We never played magic so we didn’t know commander even existed. We had politicking, cards that worked better in this format vs normal Yugioh. Good times.
Thank you for making great content that is fun to consume! The joy from the first hand from Team APS was awesome to see. All the content with other creators has been amazing, especially when I see the Professor as the guest elsewhere!
LoTR nerd here: The end conclusion of the Council of Elrond was basically that either they had to try and permanently hide it (possibly by casting it into the ocean or a fissure or something) or destroy it. The main problem being that hiding it was essentially passing the buck to the next generation. Even if the ring was never recovered (which was no certainty), Sauron couldn't be destroyed as long as it existed and even if they triumphed over him now, he would return in time to threaten the world again.
I love your crossovers! Your jokes and playful roasts coupled with respect you have for both games is always fun to watch. And the fact you both come back frequently on each others’ channels shows you also have tons of fun playing the other games and learning more too! Keep it up! I love the videos in general but also especially these frequent yugioh collabs!
39:25 in my playgroup we honor our word, but, you are allowed to do some shenanigans if someone dident read the fine print, so if someone would say "dont kill me on your turn ok?" then its acctualy ok to put that player to 1 life, keeping your word
There is a huge difference on how you feel when you get caught by sneaky wording and when you've been straight up lied to. It's a perspective thing, and it's not even that hard to word things carefully to dance around your true objectives without lying. My group plays with wording all the time as well and the game is definitely better knowing you can rely on someone's word, if you can figure out the fine print they're dancing around.
>Not even a minute in, "That's gotta go, we gotta work together." >"BRUH, YOU'RE THE BIGGEST THREAT HERE!" Already, I know it's commander, and I'm loving that's the first game, and the classic tropes are already coming out. Like my card draw deck where everyone was vibing with me until I played "Approach of the second sun" and had a hand full of counter spells, denials, bounces, and the like and it went from "Man, the elf deck is really gonna wipe the floor with us" to STOP HIM! STOP HIM AT ALL COSTS!" The elf player literally wiped the entire board and shuffled the decks rather than me instantly win as I was drawing to it.
For the Tyranid deck, Magus Lucea Kane is such an infinitely more potent commander than The Swarmlord. Well worth the swap (and Magus is included in the precon!).
I haven't followed much of magic releases since return to Kamigawa, but looking this over and seeing Dogmeat as a Voltron deck makes 1000%. Bestest boy gets all the mini nuke upgrades.
I've always said my favorite part of LOTR is the first half of the extended cut of The Fellowship when they're just chilling in the Shire, so yes I would love a 4 hour film purely set in the Shire lol
FINALLY!! Been waiting for this since the Prof was introduced to Yugioh. Really it was Team APS coming on to Tolarian that got me to take a look at all this "Magic Commander" hubbub, 4+ months and 7 commander decks later it's safe to say this crossover is what got me to add another children's card game to my hobbies.
People who helped me learn yugioh playing with the dude who helps everyone learn magic.. this is very wholesome. Cept I can already tell Larry is up to no good 😂
Really enjoyed how Team APS played here. I was yelling out that Haruspex play and Paul actually caught it, from a new player no less. Incredible! Basilisk Collar onto Slicer should've been more beneficial to Alec but other than that, Team APS did a great job!
I hope we get to see more Team APS playing magic either here or in their channel It was so good, plus I personally relate to this episode the most. After retiring from Yugioh in 2022 (since the game in my opinion became too broken and too much to handle) I’m so glad I got into magic, and even though I may be still new with it, I’m definitely enjoying it so much more!
So happy to see Team APS back on the channel! I've never been big into Yugioh, but had a good number of friends that were, and the Team APS guys seem like such awesome guys in that community. I think it's cruel but hilarious that Prof had them all play with so many UB cards!😂 I guess it's nice to have them lean into the world of MtG by having them experience what the recent years of the game have become (and how it's changed gameplay, as well as game perception.) I'm not complaining about it, though. People can buy their Fallout, and Warhammer, and Assassin's Creed cards if they want; the regular game will still be there, just with more convoluted mechanics and wordy cards... Always happy to see the channel branch into communities of other card games. Love ya, Prof! Thanks for all you do!❤🤙
15:38 Yes! They talked about this exact scenario in the book! People really sleep on The Lord of the Rings. The audiobooks by Robert Inglis are peak and make the books much more digestible. Yes, the book also talks about why the Eagles won't take care of the ring. That, the rest of the lore in the book, and, for bonus points, playing at least one of the various LotR strategy games makes it abundantly clear that it would be a suicide mission.

@1:08:59 "You can read them as much as you want, they won't get more effects" lmafao
Absolutely savage XDD
Larry went from no magic experience from the last meeting to using the verbage such as "there is one in every pod" welcome to mtg larry lol
"I'm a good one turn ally" is my new introduction when I sit down at locals 😅
marvel wishes they could have a crossover as epic as this one
they'll be a part of this one next year 🙄
who's gunna tell him?
@@ninjack11 XD
Extremely accurate with the "Whoops all Universes Beyond"
Just want to expand on the Legend Rule interaction with Slicer / Sculpting Steel, in case anyone is confused:
It DOES work that way, inspite of Slicer stating you cannot sacrifice him, because the Legend Rule isn't technically a sacrifice - it is a state-based zone change of a permanent. It's hyper specific, and looks and functions almost exactly like a sacrifice, but is not in fact a sacrifice.
So good play there, very clean way to answer the cEDH car of doom.
"If a player has two copies of a legendary card, they must choose one to keep and put the other in the graveyard."
Thanks! I was wondering about that.
So was I! Thank you for the explanation!
Same, I watch them and I don’t give 2 shots about yugioh lmao
I love how quickly they picked up on the politics of a commander table
I'm stealing "it's a viola, watch your mouth", that's a brilliant line xD
This is the first episode of anybody else playing Commander I've ever actually watched. You guys did amazing. And I really enjoy watching novices learn the game as they play. It really feels like I'm playing with real people. I hate when people are playing with $1,000 decks, the average man can't afford that. I like what you guys are doing. Keep it up
Larry's villainous theatrics were a lot of fun to watch. This was a great episode!
Turns out Alec was the real villain all along
@@mattkidroske always was
@@mattkidroske Larry tries to be the villain, Alec was born a villain 😂
All because of a dumb idea to break the promise of a game. Lol@@sammydray5919
I'd love more crossovers like this with Team APS. IM A GOOD ONE TURN ALLY is iconic now hahahaha
Paul's response to the Battle of Bywater got me hyped 😂 I love seeing new players seize opportunities like that. Very cool!
the best of the MTG community meets the best of the Yugioh community, love to see it.
Ah, a man of culture I see.
now let's be honest folks. I really wouldn't necessarily describe the professor as one of the best. board wiping multiple times like that and one game is definitely a bad move.
@@unanon_user what was he supposed to do, he didn't have anything else to play lol
I been waiting for this for what feels like a year
It has been one year, yes. Hehehe.
It’s been one week since u saw the previous collab lmaooo
@@nottherealcrystallegionair953 I was talking about waiting a year for the commander collab with team APS which was teased way back.
That is some deluxe banter at this table xD Really love their dynamic
32:04 wait did my headphones just die? Oh..no, it's just the awkwardest silence on earth.
I burst laughing after that hahahah
What makes it even funnier is that it has happened TWICE!!!
43:18 the most wholesome moment in a game of commander. I absolutely love this!
What if you pull a fancy version from a pack but not a normal one and you're a noob tho? That's not me but it's a concern for new players.
@thejunecooperative then you just take part in the Trading part of Trading Card Game and trade it for one that does have the text
Team APS are such freaking charming people i love their banter. I hope you all collab more.
As someone who got into commander thanks to the likes of this channel and command zone. Seeing all new players use the universe beyond precons i think speaks volumes to the beauty of why we love commander. We just play stuff we like or we expect or want to be to our skill set and i think thats an amazing aspect of commander.
41:36 that silent clip of PK ranting and finger banging an imaginary doughnut hole nearly had me wake the whole house with my howl
The love that the professor shows to other creators in the card game space is unmatched. He deserves so much. ❤
Not gonna lie, I really now want to see Team APS play Domain Format of Yugioh. And maybe slip into a bonus episode of Shuffle Up and Play. It's literally Yugioh commander.
huge fan of the team aps crossovers so glad to see them on shuffle up and play
Seeing this brought back so many memories. Back In the day I would play Yugioh with my two best friends but because there was three of us one person was always left out so we developed a commander for Yugioh and called it Yugioh Free-For-All. We never played magic so we didn’t know commander even existed. We had politicking, cards that worked better in this format vs normal Yugioh. Good times.
Thank you for making great content that is fun to consume!
The joy from the first hand from Team APS was awesome to see.
All the content with other creators has been amazing, especially when I see the Professor as the guest elsewhere!
The table talk was hilarious. Alec's attempts at creating allies throughout the game was so funny
LoTR nerd here:
The end conclusion of the Council of Elrond was basically that either they had to try and permanently hide it (possibly by casting it into the ocean or a fissure or something) or destroy it.
The friends are the allies we had for one turn.
APS learned the value of Deathtouch and Trample today.
I either forgot about this interaction or did know it...its been long enough that I don't know which 😅
Bring Team APS back for a new episode! They were a joy to watcg interact with The Professor and play Magic
if WOTC every figures out a secret lair cross over with Yu-Gi-Oh! and our childhood explodes
I would straight up buy a set, and if I had to, use a 5 finger discount for that collab >->
This honestly one of the most surprisingly fun collabs on youtube, do more!
>Not even a minute in, "That's gotta go, we gotta work together."
>"BRUH, YOU'RE THE BIGGEST THREAT HERE!"
Already, I know it's commander, and I'm loving that's the first game, and the classic tropes are already coming out.
Yes it really is I did so much better without it I even ended up taking it out the swarmlord and putting in other support cards
I have watched this now three times since you posted it and it is by far the most enjoyable episode
41:39 That callback reference made me crack up more than it should!😂
It's just so funny seeing Vince mime that with no audio!
I haven't followed much of magic releases since return to Kamigawa, but looking this over and seeing Dogmeat as a Voltron deck makes 1000%. Bestest boy gets all the mini nuke upgrades.
This is genuinely one of my favorite episodes I’ve seen. This was fun
Excellent collab, hoping you guys do more; the chemistry you guys share is superb.
This was such a great game, loved the banter and bickering! Have these guys back again soon!
I'm literally 9 minutes in and the excitement is palpable! Cant wait to see how this plays out
People who helped me learn yugioh playing with the dude who helps everyone learn magic.. this is very wholesome.
Cept I can already tell Larry is up to no good 😂
Great Episode! Might be interesting to get the yugioh community's resident magic player (MBT) onto the show xD
Prof had one chance to play with the my little pony secret lair, and win a game of magic with exodia.
Paul's Hawaiian shirt is so dope 🔥 for new magic players some of those plays were very cutthroat- they must have a villainous teacher 👀
Just gonna say congrats for 25 years prof that is an achievement not many can claim in marriage
Really enjoyed how Team APS played here. I was yelling out that Haruspex play and Paul actually caught it, from a new player no less. Incredible!
Basilisk Collar onto Slicer should've been more beneficial to Alec but other than that, Team APS did a great job!
Prof and team APS have great chemistry on screen ❤
I like how you can see that they are yugioh players by where they have their decks compared to the rest of the guests that usually appear on SUP
As a fan of both channels, this was a great watch - and a really fun game too! The Professor and Team APS have such fun chemistry.
I hope we get to see more Team APS playing magic either here or in their channel
It was so good, plus I personally relate to this episode the most. After retiring from Yugioh in 2022 (since the game in my opinion became too broken and too much to handle)
I’m so glad I got into magic, and even though I may be still new with it, I’m definitely enjoying it so much more!
41:36 Yu Gi Oh players know how dangerous pastries can be, especially when they bounce stuff and don’t target
So happy to see Team APS back on the channel! I've never been big into Yugioh, but had a good number of friends that were, and the Team APS guys seem like such awesome guys in that community.
I think it's cruel but hilarious that Prof had them all play with so many UB cards!😂 I guess it's nice to have them lean into the world of MtG by having them experience what the recent years of the game have become (and how it's changed gameplay, as well as game perception.)
I'm not complaining about it, though.
Even though I haven’t played YGO in nearly 5 years, Iv been following the guys from Team APS for a long time, really cool group of peeps and so happy to see you colab with them again. Super hyped to sit down and watch this episode on my lunch break 🙏
That was a blast to watch !
(I, for real, shout out alone in my appartment seeing the "Next episode" section. I'm so glad seeing Sam and Spice again together in the show ! They were in the first episode I watched some 6 months ago and got hooked maybe thanks to them being so cool !)
I just want to take a moment to recognize how COOL Paul's Final Fantasy shirt is. Looking good dude!
This video had me cracking up hahaha, pleeasssse do another episode of with these guys
Besides Farfa and Akemi, Team APS is the only other Yugioh UA-cam channel I've gotten into in the past year or so thanks to Master Duel. It was awesome to see them branch into MTG. Also, love the Final Fantasy shirt Paul is wearing.
Please please PLEASE bring these guys back! I don't touch Yu-Gi-Oh at all but I've devoured all of this content, they're such great personalities and guests!
100% need more episodes with the boys to get them into the game more, plus this is one of the most wholesome episodes for some reason to me lol
