You might want to give a better example then what you did in that bathroom. Grout will hold water, and, believe it or not some tiles will hold water...doesn't mean destructive water has penetrated into the wall. You tell a client they have have a water penetration issue in their tile, and they tear all of it out only to find out you gave a false alarm...well, you screwed up.
While you're at it, an infra-red camera can help you locate suspicious areas you can confirm with the moisture meter.
Hi There, We love this tool. From what i've learned about this tool, you should not scrape it across the surface. It will damage the pad. Best to pick it up, measure, pick it up and measure another spot. Hope it is working well for you.
we use non penetrating moisture meters in water restoration a lot I like the non penetrating so people don't get upset about the holes. also when using the non penetrating function I was told it's bad to slide the sensor across the wall

I'm just a weekend warrior (not professional) but my understanding is that the grout in the tile isn't waterproof and that is the reason the cement board needs to be water proofed. Granted sealer should be placed on the grout but I don't know if that indicates a major problem or just a little re-grout work?

The mold in the grout at the tub are indicators that moisture is in the wall. Next step look for cracked or missing grout. No expensive meter just 30 years experience and common sense.
