Sir i think 1st draw commen tangent and then after draw normal which is perpendicular to comman tangent which is must always passes through pitch point of two gear because without comman tangent , normal can not possible and if you draw then which basis it's normal from which linw it's normal or perpendicular? As u know the velocity has two components vertical and horizontal. Here to calculate the velocity in horizontal direction it's horizontal component cos@ is used.
