Nick, I cannot thank you enough for this video. I am a financial coach who has consistently channeled my clients toward a different budgeting tool. Last week one of my new clients insisted on using YNAB. Ugh! I have looked at YNAB for days trying to figure it out and got nothing but stress over it all because I found it cumbersome and not at all easy to understand. Wow, I just started YNAB yesterday afternoon and it's quite a massive, complex program (to me, anyway). However, I figure if I put the time and effort in to master it, I should reap the benefits. So glad there is an abundance of helpful information available. Every time I rewatch a video, I discover a new tidbit. Thanks to all the presenters for their efforts to lead us newbies through the underbrush so we can eventually breathe the fresh air above of financial self control.
This video just changed my whole entire thought process for how I do money. Thank you sir, as you most likely just changed my life. I've been paycheck to paycheck, in debt, all the above, and finally everything is starting to make more sense.
Thanks for this! I just got YNAB a week ago and saw some old reddit posts mentioning your videos helping people navigate the complexity. Been going through those and things are starting to click. Having an updated beginners guide that incorporates some of the other essentials to understand is great!
I got tired of issues with Mint and went looking around for different alternatives. You basically sold me on YNAB as I already was using a zero-sum budget (which was hard in Mint sometimes) and your videos have helped me to get setup in YNAB to a place I am happy with. Thank you so much for your videos.
Great video. New YNABer starting a month ago (but long-time electronic enveloper user). I wanting to make sure I get all of the basics. Note to anyone watching in 2024 and beyond: Targets have changed a bit, so this video has old info. The concepts are still the same, but the names and options have changed.
YOU ARE A GIFT! Thank you so much for helping me transition from the paper envelope system to YNAB. I watched and paused your video a zillion times as I set up my YNAB system and I am so thankful and grateful to you for this amazing step-by-step guide. I would never have been able to get such a solid start from the get-go without you. I can't wait to watch your other videos!
Started 4 years ago and setup my budget with your first video. Now I saw your new video and even as a YNAB veteran I could learn some new stuff and tweak a little bit here and there. Really appreciate your work! Many many thanks!
So excited to see an updated video! I have watched and rewatched the older YNAB videos when I have a question or am thinking through how I want to track something. Not a new user, but always good to hear the basics again!

Great video! Thank you for taking the time to put it together. Even as an experienced YNABer I was sitting here with my budget open implementing some of your tips. I loved your explanation of how YNAB handles credit card transactions, very well presented. One reason I prefer to keep a savings account is to maintain a level of fraud protection. The majority of our annual insurance premiums (home, car, & life) occur in December/January right along with spending for Christmas and school tuition for the spring semester. Having these funds build up in checking bares some level of risk (albeit fairly low), so I've opted to keep excess funds in a separate savings account. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Ryan! Appreciate you saying all of that and glad you found the video helpful. I totally understand your desire for the savings account. That makes a ton of sense and if it's working for you, then it's good to go!

You’ve been the mentor to many old-YNAB’er; me included 🙋🏻♀️ (but I starred watching you for travel stuff 3 years prior to diving into YNAB; I actually used another Australian budgeting application tool at that time). So glad you planted that seed for me so that, when I had outgrown my budgeting app in March 2020 (just prior to early retiring) I remembered your old YNAB recommendations and demos. Thank you. 🙏🏻 Ps - I like the simple approach to the inactive category in this updated start guide. One click for hiding and unhinding when viewing reports; no need for them to hold their prior category heading. Solid simplification. 👍🏼 I’ll be stealing that one 😉
You are my savior, Nick! I have been so frustrated with YNAB since I started a little over a month ago. Your video helped me so much in understanding the basics. Thank you for the generous content you provided! I spent the afternoon watching this & reworking what I entered last month. Even without using the system completing, I have chosen not to purchase a few things - while they would be nice - would not have helped me reach my goal.
Thank you! I joined YNAB in November but put it aside over the holidays. After watching many videos I jumped completely onboard in the middle of March and I love YNAB!!! Going into April I was perplexed with the extra money in my grocery category from March that rolled over into April and how it affected my new April target. It was driving me crazy! I just watched your video this morning! I will be totally changing my non-specific date categories to the "Monthly Savings Builder" set up!! Thank you!!🤯😊
Bro, this is INCREDIBLE! I am just getting into YNAB now and I am excited after watching your video. I was a frustrated Mint user who couldn't wrap my hands around finances with that tool. I am grateful it shutdown and guided me to YNAB. Thank you for this incredible guide.
I am new to your channel but have been using YNAB since 2018. My accounts are way off (from your other video) now I know why. Now, I am in a "binge" to be ready to "make a fresh start" but I also want to cry at making a fresh start.... But I appreciate you so much!!
This video was so helpful! I’ve used YNAB for several years but have never really maximized its budgeting benefits. I’m inspired by your clear, concise checklists to start this Jan. 2022 with a new budget.
Love this video, thank you. I was overwhelmed because I am living paycheck to paycheck with family. So I needed to see where eery dollar is going. This was not at all hard to do. I have over $4,000 in credit card debt + loans. But I feel clarity now then I did before. I feel empowered and like I can turn things around for myself.
Hey, Nick. I'm one of those Mvelopes users for years who had to find another program to replace Mvelopes. The recommended financial applications by Mvelopes was EasyDollar. I found that program lacking the features I loved most about Mvelopes. After searching all the programs I could, I chose YNAB. I was totally lost in understanding it to begin with (as most 68 year old folks might be). You convinced me to go with YNAB after following your GREAT, EASY TO UNDERSTAND, DETAILED, and AWESOME tutorial videos. You have a genuine ability to teach and I appreciate that you are taking your time to do this. You deserve a huge raise as YNAB is very fortunate to have you!
this video was amazing and i strongly recommend it to people who dont really understand money or this software. it starts a lil slow but he really breaks down all the process so you can really understand! 10 out of 10
I spent my Saturday watching your video and creating my budget. I had this app some time ago and deleted it bc it was wildly confusing. You did such an amazing job breaking it down and giving your own tips!!! I can see my money in a way I never have before. Thank you x10! 😆
I wish that your quick little explanations of each target were the ones in YNAB. The team at YNAB is doing a great job, but the way you phrased it was very good and clicked with me much more. Specifically, the TSB "needing the money at one time" explanation.
My notes: 8:26 Starting balance should not be the "available balance" on your bank account. You want the posted/cleared balance (that doesn't include any pending transactions). 36:45 Look at the video about credit cards 37:23 "Because the available column is like a mini checking account for that category." Great explanation! 43:50 - Daily Routine
Yessss NICK! I watched your YNAB videos around 2-ish years ago and JUST got back into YNAB this week (judgement free zone). So excited to see that you've released a new/updated video that will help guide me through this journey (again.. judge not) because you were the only one able to make YNAB make sense to me originally.
The tidbit about comparing the underfunded number with your income is gold. It's easy to get carried away when creating targets, to the point where it's unrealistic!
I’ve been watching you for years and I fell off the YNAB boat but I’m getting back on…and YOU are the first person I thought to look for to get me back into the swing of things. Just wanted to share my appreciation for you and your videos. Continue to inspire others like you do me, homie. And AMAZING UPDATE! Just in time for me haha. Mahalo 🤙🏽
I am one of those learners that needs to learn in a step by step approach. I started last year and gave up because I just couldn’t grasp the concept for some reason. I am currently going through cancer treatments and the fear of the cost, travel, tons of copays, and possible loss of time at work while living pay to pay scares me more than the cancer. I knew I needed to get myself on a budget breaking the living paycheck to paycheck cycle. I am SO happy I found you. I am signed up w YNAB but need to watch any and all videos that will help me fully understand the “concept “ if that makes sense. I’m sticking to it this time thanks to your videos.
Nick, I am a financial coach and use YNAB personally and with my clients. Your videos are my go to for an intro to YNAB. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!!
Incredibly helpful beginner video! I have been working with my YNAB account for a few weeks and really struggling to get started. This video was exactly what I needed and I learned so much! Thank you Nick!
Thank you so much. Using YNAB's tutorials left me befuddled. You have cleared up everything (except about reimbursable expenses, but I'm sure if I dig around I'll find that you've covered those elsewhere.) Very appreciative of your knowledge and sharing.
So glad I found this. I was truly ready to give up on YNAB because I always do well with my first paycheck but once the second one comes in I manage to mess it all up. This was so helpful. Thank you so much. Im ready to tackle this again.
I have been fumbling around with YNAB for years in a very dysfunctional on and off-again relationship. Your vids are gold! I finally feel like I know how to YNAB like a pro! Thank you! :D
Thanks for the explanation on the difference between "Needed for Spending" and "Monthly Savings Builder". Def went back and changed my targets so I can start building a cushion in my budget.
Thank you so much for this informative video. I am about two years from retiring and really wanted to get a handle on eliminating my (dumb) debt and your tutorial was excellent in giving me a great restart to using YNAB to its fullest. I have tried many times using YNAB, fell away, and came back to it again. Your walk-through is the foundation I needed to see. I watched this at least twice before beginning my restart. Peace.
Thanks for doing this video. I tried YNAB about a year ago and I gave up because it was overwhelming, and I didn't understand some of the basics in a way that makes sense in my head. Your video helped break it down and simplify the process so I'm going to give it another go.
Awesome thank you, i used to use ynab years ago, but due to having to manually import all transacitions in the uk, moved away from it, with uk banks now supported trying it again and your video was a great refresher and explained clearly what i want to achieve without having to read lots of material thank you so much !
Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial! I'm new to YNAB and following along your tutorial clears a lot of my confusions. Can't wait to watch more of your videos!
YNAB seems like great software, but it also seems to be lacking clarity around the intended/ideal use. This video does a fantastic job of clearing that up!
Wife and I finally put all out money into one account and I feel this app along with your process will be a great tool to set rules and boundaries for our spending habits to help keep us on track. Thank you for the video and I look forward to diving into the rest of this play list!
excellent video! I've decided to give YNAB a try because of your tutorials and ill be sure to use your affiliate link. Definitely had to slow the video down however and pause A LOT due to the extremely fast talking over very detailed information.
I’ve been looking for a “good” budgeting system for years. I tried Every Dollar, hated it, was turned to Mint, absolutely hate it lol. When I stared with Mint years ago I didn’t have the money to pay for a budgeting app, plus it didn’t make sense “to me” to pay for something unnecessary when trying to save money lol. But now I’m thinking of this as an investment 🤔 I can stupidly be paycheck to paycheck but I don’t want that anymore. I want to know exactly where I’m at at all times. Once I saw the YNAB community I was sold on this app. This is the first video I came across, I’ll use this to set up everything lol. I’m thinking I’ll wait a bit longer and check some other videos before I actually start my trial. Thank you so much for creating these videos 🥳
Thank you for this great update. I've been using YNAB now for a few months and it's been very helpful, and that is in great part to your videos. This new one covered topics I'd not used before or had forgotten about.
Thanks! I'm glad to hear that the videos have been helpful for you and the new one covered some other things you hadn't used before. Appreciate you watching.
thank you for this video I just started learning YNAB today, you made it look very easy, it was a concise guide and straight to the point. Great video!
Thanks Nick, great video. Been having a lot of financial anxiety over the past few years even though I save a lot. Seems like budgeting was the answer, and my new years resolution was to get organized so this fits in well with the theme!
New here, from a Rose Han video. I am in YNAB’s trial month. Thank you for making helpful & modern presentations - calming, smart & understandable for us non-number minds.
@@mappedoutmoney Hmm I watched many of hers but she mentioned YNAB in general. If I recall it, I’ll reply here again. I saw a couple of older YNAB tutorials by other teachers & then found your newer-improved videos. I prefer your style of presentation.
I actually use a lot of the savings balance target type but without a date. This allows me to have a target amount, but I contribute whatever I can, whenever I can. Doesn’t count for my underfunded number either
I totally get that. I typically don't tell beginners to do that, because when first learning about the underfunded number and target types, it can be confusing trying to remember what does and doesn't add to that underfunded number. So I'll often not have a target for those items, put the total desired amount in the name, and only add a target when I am actively starting to save for them. But, ultimately it's all personal, so if you like having the savings balance targets, then I think that's great!
That was truly an excellent tutorial. I’ve been using YNAB for years, and I’ve learned things from your video. Are you going to be making updated tutorials for a lot of your previous ones?
Thanks! So glad it helped even as a long-time YNAB user. As for updating, At this moment I'm not planning to do updates to videos that are more-or-less the same, but I will likely update the ones where I feel there's a big enough difference in how I teach it now that it warrants a change. Example: I'm releasing a new video about YNAB and savings accounts this week :)

Finally! I’ve been waiting on an updated guide.
Hope it helps!
Your original 2018 video is what FINALLY got me to use and understand YNAB! Thank you!!!
Absolutely Colin, so glad it was helpful for you!
Hey thanks! So glad that this gave you what you needed. Happy budgeting :)
This is brilliant. Without your guide I would have given up, but you've helped make it all so clear and simple for me! Thankyou
I wish that your quick little explanations of each target were the ones in YNAB. The team at YNAB is doing a great job, but the way you phrased it was very good and clicked with me much more. Specifically, the TSB "needing the money at one time" explanation.
Hey thanks man, I really appreciate that. Glad that the explanations are helpful for you!
SO, so helpful. Will keep coming back to this video again and again. I feel so much more confident about using this app
So glad it was helpful for you Karin!
My notes:
8:26 Starting balance should not be the "available balance" on your bank account. You want the posted/cleared balance (that doesn't include any pending transactions).
36:45 Look at the video about credit cards
37:23 "Because the available column is like a mini checking account for that category." Great explanation!
No judgement here Kilo, so glad to hear that you're getting back to it! Hope the videos help!
The tidbit about comparing the underfunded number with your income is gold. It's easy to get carried away when creating targets, to the point where it's unrealistic!
Thanks Rebekah! So glad that part was really helpful for you : )
Thank you sir! Started YNAB a few days ago and I was shocked to see you in Jan 2022!
Thanks Mathee! Glad the videos have helped!
Mahalo 🤙🏽
Hey thanks Hina! So glad to hear that this updated video was helpful for you! Glad you're getting back into the swing of it.
🙏🏿
This is a goldmine. Thank you for taking the time to create the video series on this. I finally feel like I have hope to actually live by a budget.
Nick, I am a financial coach and use YNAB personally and with my clients. Your videos are my go to for an intro to YNAB. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!!
Glad to hear they help!
I want to thank you for all the timestamps! I am a baby YNABER having to leave Mvelopes aftr 20+ years. This is helping me so much!
So glad I found this. I was truly ready to give up on YNAB because I always do well with my first paycheck but once the second one comes in I manage to mess it all up. This was so helpful. Thank you so much. Im ready to tackle this again.
This should be required-watching for all new YNAB users. Thank you!!
One word ...... Fantastic!! Thank you so much a true pro!
Thanks!
I have been fumbling around with YNAB for years in a very dysfunctional on and off-again relationship. Your vids are gold! I finally feel like I know how to YNAB like a pro! Thank you! :D
Thank you, this demo was very helpful in onboarding on to YNAB! 🙌
Thanks for the explanation on the difference between "Needed for Spending" and "Monthly Savings Builder". Def went back and changed my targets so I can start building a cushion in my budget.
THANK YOU for this!! New to YNAB and this is 100x better than all the YNAB videos I tried watching to learn.
Peace.
So happy to hear this was helpful for you Ebert! YNAB is an awesome tool for retirees. So hang in there and I think you'll really really like it.
Nick, thank you for the thousands of people you are helping, including me. Your videos are the best!
Thanks for watching Amanda! So glad that the videos have helped you.
The explanation of why you cannot budget future dollars really helped a lot. It is really the only way to not overspend
Thank you, this made YNAB click for me. I got the trial and love it.
Thanks Josh!
I think it is the first video of one hour I follow ñaying attention. Really valuable ontent mate, thank you because I gave up YNAB several times.
Thanks for doing this video. I tried YNAB about a year ago and I gave up because it was overwhelming, and I didn't understand some of the basics in a way that makes sense in my head. Your video helped break it down and simplify the process so I'm going to give it another go.
I just started using YNAB today, and this video was massively helpful to get me to understand the software. Thank you! Subscribed.
Awesome thank you, i used to use ynab years ago, but due to having to manually import all transacitions in the uk, moved away from it, with uk banks now supported trying it again and your video was a great refresher and explained clearly what i want to achieve without having to read lots of material thank you so much !
Just joined YNAB, and found this video extremely helpful as I get started. Thank you!!
Best explanation beginner video yet!! Thank you so much
Wow! This is an Excellent video. This is the second time I've watched it. This gives me a great foundation with which to start my YNAB budget.
I swear I have tried ynab sooo many times! It’s never made sense to me 😆 thank you!!
Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial! I'm new to YNAB and following along your tutorial clears a lot of my confusions. Can't wait to watch more of your videos!
So glad that was helpful for you!
YNAB seems like great software, but it also seems to be lacking clarity around the intended/ideal use. This video does a fantastic job of clearing that up!
It really doesn't
thanks!! would love to see videos that go deeper into the simple budget and the values based budget! 🤩
Thanks for that, good to know people have some interest in that!
Wife and I finally put all out money into one account and I feel this app along with your process will be a great tool to set rules and boundaries for our spending habits to help keep us on track. Thank you for the video and I look forward to diving into the rest of this play list!
Excellent video breaking down everything!! I'm going crazy trying to set up my first YNAB budget and you're insight is making it much more manageable!
Just started using YNAB this video was super helpful thank you for the content
Awesome, so glad it helped!
I'm late to the party but I'm finally going to get my finances under control this year. Thanks so much for this video!
Awesome, congrats! It's never to late. Excited for you to get things under control :)
excellent video!
A really thanks from France. I just started and was a little bit confuse between credit cards and account. Great video
Wow. This was a terrific video. Thank you so much! I'm brand new to YNAB, and I followed your video just now to set up my first YNAB budget.
Awesome, so glad that the video was helpful for you!
Now I love YNAB! Was about to go to another product. Thank you for this tutorial.
Thanks Nick, great video. Been having a lot of financial anxiety over the past few years even though I save a lot. Seems like budgeting was the answer, and my new years resolution was to get organized so this fits in well with the theme!
My guy. Was going to watch your other videos today, but you came through.
👊
Hi Nick, I just started wtih YNAB again and this has been super helpful.
Nick! I thought I knew everything about YNAB smh. The tip about the savings account being an asset made me rework my entire setup. Thank you!
Thanks so much A.R. So glad that the video helped you learn something new!
New here, from a Rose Han video. I am in YNAB’s trial month. Thank you for making helpful & modern presentations - calming, smart & understandable for us non-number minds.
Hey thanks! If you don't mind me asking, what video of Rose Han lead you here? Thanks!
@@mappedoutmoney Hmm I watched many of hers but she mentioned YNAB in general. If I recall it, I’ll reply here again. I saw a couple of older YNAB tutorials by other teachers & then found your newer-improved videos. I prefer your style of presentation.
@@Shakashack2022 thanks for that. Super helpful, glad you like the videos!
Still the best tutorial out there - back for a refresher! Thanks for all you do...
THanks Tomeka!
Great video, really helped me understand the mechanics of YNAB better
That was truly an excellent tutorial. I’ve been using YNAB for years, and I’ve learned things from your video. Are you going to be making updated tutorials for a lot of your previous ones?
Thanks! So glad it helped even as a long-time YNAB user. As for updating, At this moment I'm not planning to do updates to videos that are more-or-less the same, but I will likely update the ones where I feel there's a big enough difference in how I teach it now that it warrants a change.
Example: I'm releasing a new video about YNAB and savings accounts this week :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH! You are extremely efficient at explaining this program!
Thank-you very much for making this video. This is exactly what I was looking for and MORE! Greatly appreciated, Nick.
So glad it helped Kris!
incredibly helpful! Great structure. Many thanks.
Glad ti helped!
❤loved loved loved this video. Straight to the point, well explained, very efficient. Thank you a million for all this precious information. 🙏🏾
