Recommend you also cavity wax the shit out of the inside of the roof skin after you have finished painting. Also do inside the sills and other cavities. The inside of that metal needs more protection than it got in 1990 and there's no other product that flows in the gaps as well. I used KS250 cavity wax in the roof of my Patrol and found that it had wicked between the pinch welded panels so well I could see a few spots where it made its way through the sealant to the outside.
That's definitely happening. Plus the chassis rails, but as you said, only once painted. If I've spent all these weeks taking the greasy stuff off it, I'll have to make damn sure it's fully painted before I go putting greasy stuff back on it 😂

The best colour to hide imperfections is white. Might as well make it as easy as possible.
I don't know what the colour of your 76 of dreams is called but you should paint the patrol orange
Paint it one of the VW exclusive colours to stir up the treg owners some more. Reef or lapiz blue.
