Thank YOU Tim. Great lessons and always informative. I'm 55 years old and Ive been drumming since I was 8. As a challenge to myself I decided after so many years in matched grip and rock to finally commit to learning traditional grip and jazz stylings and your lessons have been a HUGE help.
Loved this lesson, it was a good way to change up a solo I think. I'm a girl drummer in my jazz band, and I love watching your videos bc they help me switch up my style!
Maya Jepson Thank you so much! It really means a lot that my videos are helping you. Let me know if there is a topic you want me to cover. All my best!
You're very welcome! Make sure to subscribe and hit the notification bell, I have some great lessons coming up in the very near future. Thanks for watching!
First time I've seen these 2 videos. Great stuff! I'd love to see soloing not only with what you've already done, but also change the time signatures along the way using paradiddles and double paradiddles as well as 5 stroke, etc.
Great lesson. The rolls aren't a problem for me but I think I'll have to go with a jazz tuning to pull this off. I can't really get the rebound the way they're tuned now.
Hey Tim, great lesson. Glad to have you back. Could you do a lesson on integrating bass drum into jazz coming phrases or just bass drum phrasing in jazz. Keep up the great job.
Your drums are perfectly tuned every single drum sounds exactly like it should in context with the other ones. They usually sound like that from the store but the second I change heads I can never get that sound back did you tune them if so will you do a video on how to do that?
Killer lesson! I've been messing around with 5 stroke rolls a bunch lately, but have been sticking it RRLLK with the "shorter" phrase. I *think* I stole it from Eric Harland. Glad to see you're back, keep it up!
Eu tenho o book mas, pelo tempo que tenho vou seguindo meus estudos na perspectiva das tuas aulas, entendo os padrões (rudimento) e treino aplicabilidade
Glad to be back! Thanks so much! Actually, I've completely left it alone. I had no idea how much I'd be using it and can't afford the downtime to restore it. Plus, it's kind of nice to not care at all about the finish.
Awesome, welcome back! I've been wondering about playing swing on the high-hat. How do you go about setting up your high-hat, and what is the technique you are using? :)
I was thinking about when you keep the ride swing pattern on the high-hat with your stick, either only using hands and choking or controlling the height with the foot!
Enjoyed the video. One clarification, the condensed five-stroke is over triplet feel? I'm thrown off by your 3/2 note. So the accent is on the "a" of the triplet with double strokes on the down-beat and "&"?
Good shit. I was wondering your ride hand playing on the slower tempos. U seemed to play the last triplet before the 1st and 3rd quarters a bit late. Do u prefer this over playing the triplet "on point" at slower tempos and if so then why? Would like to hear your opinion and hopefully u understand my rally english.
Thanks! You are correct. I am coming out of the Art Blakey and Jimmy Cobb school of ride cymbal playing. I think it all depends on context. If I'm playing in an Elvin sort of way, it will feel entirely different.
I’m scouring the interwebs to eradicate every misspelling of the word “DEFINITELY”. The crowd favorite is DEFINITELY DEFIANTLY. I don’t have any concrete data, but I’d guess that more than half the time people are using the word DEFIANTLY as if it were definitely. I worry about our collective literacy level, as DEFIANTLY is not phonetically close, as one look at the word should reveal. There’s no FIN sound, and there’s no NIT sound! How can you be able to read, look at this word, and say “looks right to me!” lol. It DOESNT look right at all, and of course it’s not. Between this, and VIOLA instead of VOILA, it’s enough to drive you batty. Don’t forget - “Tis better to be thought a fool, than to post on the web and remove all doubt”
It's there, if you're using phone speakers, you'll never hear it, but if you are on headphones, it is there quietly, just as I intended it. Hope this helps!

Wow wow wow wow wow what a lesson!! I've got my hand full with this one!!! Can't wait to show it off!! 🎉
Great lesson. I love the fact that rudimentary rolls become a secret weapon of sorts .
Thank you! They are super effective. Glad you like it!
I dig that you're having fun with this stuff. Nothing makes me feel better than playing.
I hear that!
The first comp with the slow 5's on the snare brought back memories of Hogan's Heroes! Excellent
Thanks!

LanceCampeau Thank you!
Great lesson. The rolls aren't a problem for me but I think I'll have to go with a jazz tuning to pull this off. I can't really get the rebound the way they're tuned now.

Have you done a lesson on paradiddles or flams
applied to the jazz drum set?
Not yet, but they are in the works.
Can you do a lesson on how to add density to triplet fills? Great lesson btw!
Alec Vargas Thanks so much! I'm not sure what you mean by density? Do you have an example I can check out?
Your drums are perfectly tuned every single drum sounds exactly like it should in context with the other ones. They usually sound like that from the store but the second I change heads I can never get that sound back did you tune them if so will you do a video on how to do that?

Just cool!! Thanks!
I noticed you wear Converse shoes when you play I use the same ones they're light and they slide good on the pedal
I wear them mainly for these videos. Most of my gigs require dress shoes which also work very well.
great lesson
Thank you!
Great old Gretsch drums!
Thank you, but they aren't that old. They're from 2008. I do have a couple kits from the 50's and 60's though. Also great drums!
Great to see you back!
Aesthetic Muffin Thanks so much!
This is awesome Tim! Thanks for sharing! And i´m glad to see you back on the youtubezz! :D
Tiago DrumLab Thanks!
Killer lesson! I've been messing around with 5 stroke rolls a bunch lately, but have been sticking it RRLLK with the "shorter" phrase. I *think* I stole it from Eric Harland. Glad to see you're back, keep it up!

Hey Tim! nice to see you back! Any update on the gretsch big band set you were restoring?
Glad to be back! Thanks so much! Actually, I've completely left it alone. I had no idea how much I'd be using it and can't afford the downtime to restore it. Plus, it's kind of nice to not care at all about the finish.
it's cool always
He's BAAAAAAACK!
Steve Pruitt You know it baby!
Steve Pruitt Dude, you are the truth
Man that ride has some serious air to it.
Awesome, welcome back!
I've been wondering about playing swing on the high-hat. How do you go about setting up your high-hat, and what is the technique you are using? :)
Thanks so much! Do you mean, playing with your foot or with sticks or both?
I was thinking about when you keep the ride swing pattern on the high-hat with your stick, either only using hands and choking or controlling the height with the foot!
Great! Stay tuned later this week...
New video is up and I think you'll like it... ua-cam.com/video/TxUrYJIuGeY/v-deo.html I hope I didn't butcher your name too bad.
You look Great and play Great too!
Thank you!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAH HOLY MOLY HE's BACK
Great Video!! :) Thanks....
Thanks you!
Enjoyed the video. One clarification, the condensed five-stroke is over triplet feel? I'm thrown off by your 3/2 note.
So the accent is on the "a" of the triplet with double strokes on the down-beat and "&"?
Thanks! It is a 16th note feel. The count is:
1e&a 2 &a 3e& 4e&a
1 &a 2e& 3e&a 4 &a
1e& 2e&a 3 &a 4e&
1e&a 2 &a 3e& 4e&a
Hope this helps!

The Gretsch sounds real good, did you have to do edge works to get it to sound so good?
defiantly quality over quantity

Can you make a hit set up lesson.
Still have the Artisan, still have the Aquarians...and the famous Green Gretsch...Where have you all been???
Ha! Yeah, I've been busy in the real world, but am once again going to make UA-cam lessons a priority. More to come....
How old are your Green Gretsch? 3 ply or 6?
They are from 2008, so 6 ply.
You is the bestest.
Where you getting these jazz gigs? What state are you in?
The Jazz Capitol of the world, Sacramento, CA. There's a surprisingly good scene here. It's no NYC, but great players and a few gigs to go around.
I'm glad I feel fine.
Me too.
Are you playing the bass drum at all? I can't tell
It's there, if you're using phone speakers, you'll never hear it, but if you are on headphones, it is there quietly, just as I intended it. Hope this helps!
4:45 *when the caffeine finally kicks in*
I prefer my homemade cold brew for faster tempos.
Pls repeat the beat again, i didn't get it. You're now my online mentor.
There is a pdf available.
You should try Latin jazz if you haven't already
I will! I do have some other videos on the Bossa Nova, but they're old...
YEEEESSSSS
I'm not a UA-cam drummer. You're the UA-cam drummer.
I guess you got me on that one.
The best joke of the century:

Elvin!
nooo the flipflops are gone :'(
Forever...
I hardly comment on youtube.
But I genuinely want to be your friend.
haha yeah more rolls lessons ,with the same kind of humor ;)
Working on it.
I once tried soloing with rolls.... I got much better results with soloing with bagels.
Well played...
OMFG
If you don't know what a 5 stroke roll is..... read, rudiments, drumset proper order
He's back but not in a fedora, 😆 I hate those hats!
