Load Development Chronographing

  • Here we chronograph 4 different loads and shoot them over a chronograph. The Weatherby has a 24" barrel and the Steyr has a 20" barrel. There's a definite difference in velocity with the barrel length difference for sure. The real difference is how both rifles performed downrange. Load development is very important when working up a load for either hinting or target shooting.

    I am so glad to see you posting videos again. The best reloading videos on the net

    All I knew before this was that .357 hauled ass out of a rifle barrel vs a pistol barrel.
    Now I know more,great video!

      I am looking for someone with a .357 rifle so we can do a side by side comparison. (mm and those smaller cartridges don't make much difference. The 9mm only holds about 4.5grs of powder but the 357 will hold about 15grs of H110 or more.

    I gather these are of the self rifles so half wood and full wood are renound for holding instead of walking because of the wood and design for military this brings me to the Weatherby plastic composite stock action probably moving in the stock let me now cheers for the review

    Thanks for posting. Was that a passing bullet at 4:38? Not a sound I like to hear.

      I wish the mic worked better with the "dead cat" on it.

    G'day from downunder!! Great video, and very well explained, well done.
    Mate, I think I know what is wrong with your printer. I see your chrony had its lid off. This allows wind to stir up your bits & bytes. Blows them all over the shop, basically wastes them. This could lead to opening up your groups, projectiles bouncing off escaping bytes. Not sure, but bits would be too small to affect them. Anyway, with the escaping bits &
    bytes, there's not enough left over to fire the printer up.........(oops, lmao)
    Great video young fella, thanks for posting :)

    I enjoy your videos but you need to do something about the wind noise external mic with a wind sock would work the reason I say this is some times a important word will cut by wind noise thanks again for all your work

      I was using a Rode windproof mic...however the wind overpowered it.

    Is it true you can find the node without even looking at paper and just go by the chronograph velocities? I heard a guy say he doesn't even shoot at paper when searching for the node

    • @ammosmith
      @ammosmith  4 роки тому

      I go by group size because the barrel harmonics are different for every rifle. My friend does the node thing on his loads. It seems to work sort of but not absolute.

      @@ammosmith oh ok. I had a load where I can consistently get groups to .35". A long distance shooter told me it kinda doesn't matter if it groups good @100 on paper but the es isn't low because it'll show at greater distances

    • @ammosmith
      @ammosmith  4 роки тому

      @@Erik7prc I discovered that too. This is why I sight in my rifles at longer distances 300 for 5.56 and 500 for 308. Bullets do weird things. They don't settle into their path until about 160 meters. I had a great group at 100 that was .168' but it shot about 6 inches at 300. I finally got my load that is ideal for both my 308 and 5.56mm. I use Varget for them both or AR Comp.

    What would the effect be on bullet speed, if you reloaded without using the expander ball during your resizing? If it changes your speed, how far would it throw your grouping off as well?

    • @ammosmith
      @ammosmith  7 років тому

      I haven't tried it. The expander ball is essential to getting the neck to the right diameter for tension on the bullet. Also it ensures the neck is perfectly round.

    • @TakeDeadAim

      Buy a Lee factory crimp die and ensure all rounds are uniformly secured. It also allows the pressure to be more uniform. No need to crimp it too tight though. I prefer a med tension on rifle brass.
