- Working at a company with a mature design discipline can be essential for your growth - but how can you assess the level of design maturity at a company from the outside? In this video I share exact interview questions I asked when recently interviewing for a design position, to help you assess the design practice at the company, their level of design maturity and whether it's a right fit for the kind of role and company you're looking for.

Hi Femke, you have no idea how I needed this video. Thank you and thank you! love your channel and podcast 💜
Great questions that every designer needs to ask 🙌 Great content, Femke!
Absolutely agree. Design is core in web. However not a lot of people understand that.
That's why we have to help them see it!
Thank you so much for another such an important video!
You are a queen!!
Thanks so much!!
Thank you so much for sharing! I've saved this video to refer to in future interviews.
Yay that's great to hear!
I find that studio model gets more exposure to all teams as opposed to embedded teams. Less collaboration and knowledge transfer. I recently was asked this question at an interview. I would love to hear more views on these approaches. Your video covers such an important topic. I also wonder would someone be intimidated by some of these questions if the maturity is low. I guess that’s then a good sign.
This video is very informational and helpful. Thank you for the great content. Design maturity is definitely important to know to see if the position/team/company is a good match with what you are looking for. :)
You're so welcome!
I love this video! It's homework Product Designers should do during the interview stage with a company
Thanks so much :)
Wow thanks. I always ask about the product they work. Which at times make me look lame. Its a good set of questions to ask when the interviewer.
Glad it was helpful!
This video is well done! Especially since im currently working at start up with low ux maturity and looking to branch out. Do you have any tips on how to write up case studies when you're working for a company that has low ux maturity and delivers your solution oriented briefs?
Ah I thought that video was about getting design more appreciated and seen as a strategic point in the company. That would be a super interesting topic!
Agreed! If I experience that, I'll be sure to share :)
Great content! Some answers will only come out If in-depth questions have been asked.
Very true!
Thanks, Femke. The question is not related to the video. What screen do you use for your day-to-day job?
Kiwi here! 🇳🇿 🥝
Love your videos ❤️ very inspiring to see your design leadership! It can be frustrating to be at the whim of business/dev heavy leadership... 👨💼👨💻👎😩
Could you please do a video on how AI (especially generative) could be/has been affecting your workflow and how you would AI proof/augment your career as a designer? Very exciting times! 🤖
Also maybe look into Web3 and crypto for clients - lots of creative freedom, cool brand storytelling + lore and lots of capital flowing around! 📈
3:30 I look for the team on the linkedin profile of the company. When I see there are only Product Designers and no UXers, it is already a red flag, When I ask then nobody does "research" or "research" is made when it happens by some PD or by the PM, this is enough for a low level UX Maturity.
Unfortunately these days many goes around this way.
11:55 I would have place this one for first because yeah the team rituals does not necessary define the maturity. Just because there's a design review, it doesn't mean that they care about design, I mean before the rituals someone should ask if the design is guessed and so we are talking about web design, or if it comes from the research.
12:52 No no, there is a wrong answer!
If they are all for the business that is the wrong answer. It means throwing in the garbage 100y of UX, 21 years of Agile manifesto and Teresa Torres if you are a PM.
The correct answer would be "we are human centered" that should be the right answer that help to highlight the level within the business, assuming that they actually apply it. The middle way one it's just acceptable, but also there it depends if balancing is data backed or the caprice of someone😅
get to the point!
