  • Fixated on other dogs.
Glen us an extremely friendly, 11 month old Labrador who loves the company of other dogs. His human is highly motivated and has tried a tonne of positive based protocols to help reduce the fixation with mixed results.
One of the things I said to him was that we often try to do more to get more. We talk to the dog more, we cajole more, we move more, we use the lead more, we become "more." This us because our behaviour is undergoing an extinction process, where we try more if the behaviours which have worked previously or we think might work in order to get the results (outcomes/reinforcers) we need.
In the above example, we are putting the weight of our actions in the antecedents to the dogs' behaviour, not the consequences/reinforcement (reinforcement drives behaviour, not cues or "commands")
What did we do? We flipped it. We placed the bulk of our actions into thinking about reinforcement. Where, when, how and why to deliver reinforcement (not just food, but sniffing, access to dogs etc).
I had asked Glen's human if he had noticed how quiet the training was, how little he spoke to his amazing dog. He had. I asked him to spend some time reflecting on that.
Slow down, stop talking and doing, breathe, observe and listen.
We made massive improvements in the space of an hour, where Glen was calmly saying hello to some dogs, and choosing to walk past others.
Lots of work to do but a great start.
