    I believe it was 1963 when I watched Sam Snead help to "christen" the new Mt. Vernon CC in our neighborhood in N. Virginia. He played a round against the head pro. I was one of the kids holding the ropes. Before the round, he gave a 1 iron clinic for the folks. If I remember correctly, he shot a 67 or so. I feel very fortunate to have seen him play in person.

    Without doubt the greatest natural athlete to ever play golf. I saw this man play when I was a caddie in michigan and it was the most awesome exhibition I've ever seen. He was in his mid sixties and still playing the tour! I saw jack, tiger and all the others but no one left me in a state of awe like thus man did. As one observer put it the greatest player if all time for just playing your whole life day in and day out. What a player.

    Great footage of the great Sam Snead. Nice job with the video and great analysis, Craig. Thanks!

    Damn. What a legend. You just get the feeling with Sam that he had moves for days, wherever he needed them, like a total baller. Golf's Bond.

    As usual another great analysis. Also a good video showing Sam Snead's bilateral knee abduction/squat, to leverage against the ground.

    Rickie use to have that bow in the legs and squat, but I haven’t watched his swing in a long time

    Pure god given talent. No one could teach that, i think it might be unproductive to watch.

      I agree you can’t teach those moves. I don’t think it’s unproductive to watch it I think I’ve learnt a lot from the swing
      I believe I’ve improved my ball Striking with a couple of his moves that I feel a little- thanks for posting

    When asked at a demo event how he hits those nice draws and fades at will, Sam said "I think it"

    • @CraigHansonGolf

      Yeah it can get to that level after Years of practice and at high talent levels... to draw a ball 3-5 yards hitting it 200+ there’s more of a picture in the mind rather than a deliberate thought of let’s draw it...

    Craig, if you look at the smaller human, hugely powerful, squatting, jumping/twisting, ripping tennis forehand of legend Andre Agassi, you will see the Both-Knees-Out action during the squat - and it is done by all non-tall tournament tennis players - (so I naturally do this leg action). Bizarrely, if you live in the world of families that winter ski race and summer mountain bike, for some reason kids that grow up doing these sports to absorb jumps and keep their ski edges, or tires, in contact with the snow/ground while descending, this outward knee action is also deeply ingrained in them - which just so happens to be my partner. I met her later in life and very early after I met her I saw a picture of her golf swing coming into 2nd parallel and I asked what her handicap was because she looked like Snead, knees out, huge lag - I thought she may have been a scratch player - she wasn't but this action comes bizarrely natural to her - she does kill the driver with a carry of 210-230. I will find the picture and send you a copy because it's just hard to believe when you see it that she's not a Pro when you see the picture.

    I have yet to see anyone with the powerful leg position that Sam had at impact!

    Craig, In the past I have heard people comment that Snead had an over the top pull shot move,I remenber someone saying that on TV years ago when saying Reteif Goosen having a similar move. What are your thoughts on that observation?

    • @wallstreetoneil
      @wallstreetoneil 4 роки тому

      look at time index 5:17 - that downswing is PERFECTLY delivered from the inside - there is ZERO over the top anything

    • @CraigHansonGolf
      @CraigHansonGolf  4 роки тому

      Yeah it looks over the top because it’s taken a litter on the inside I’m the takeaway

    • @mudddge
      @mudddge 4 роки тому +3

      His swing gets called over the top because his downswing plane is on top of his backswing plane. Not the same as the hacker over the top move.
      He also did swing with what he called a pull along his body line.

    The Gods said, "we have created a golf swing" then they gave it to Sam Snead
    2.35 positively cosmic ! I was looking at that later film of the legendary Hogan v Snead Shell world of golf match, one can see how powerfully built he was, his back looked as if it was plated with iron, i was wondering how he conditioned himself ? poised, balanced, fluid strength, did anyone make it look so effortless? thanks for your analysis,
    one cannot watch Sam Snead and not dream, "if only"

    Craig , would todays teaching would consider Sams move away an inside takeaway ?

    Teknikly the swing is very basic, but his rythm and tempo, wich is very individual,
    is still impressive. We can all learn to watch better golfers play.
