The Raven Boys always had this mystical atmosphere to it. It always felt as tho magic was buzzing in the air around me. There's something about the author's writing that really made it for me.
I read Spinning Silver last year and WOW! It's so so good. I think Uprooted is the more well known and popular of Naomi Novik's books, but this one is just as good. There was this quote from it that I literally have plastered all over my life: “But I had not known that I was strong enough to do any of those things until they were over and I had done them. I had to do the work first, not knowing.”
"A Winter's Promise" is actually the book that got me out of a reading slump which lasted years! It's amazing! Really different from other books! I'm so happy you enjoyed it too!
Love how The Girl in the Tower matched your sweater, and how you at one point kind of wore it as a hat out of exitement over how much you loved that series😆😍
If you liked Naomi Novik's Spinning Silver, you'll probably also like her other stand along novel, Uprooted, as well as Kate Forsyth's Bitter Greens. Atmospheric in a different way, I think of The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield and The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. Completely different again but I loved how much I could feel the history and the location, even though they are middle grade novels, I just read The Crowfield Curse and The Crowfield Demon by Pat Walsh. There's a stalled third book to come out with the same characters but the last update promising it will be published is a couple years old so I'm not going to hold my breath. However, the first two books both have satisfying wrap ups for their own story lines, so you won't be left hanging if the third book never manifests. Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin also feels atmospheric, as well as The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey.
I know this is for books, but I also suggest Natsume's Book of Friends and Mushi-shi as two very atmospheric anime-manga, for those looking for more in a different vein. Natsume is a very warm story about an orphaned boy who has always been able to see spirits (who are often highly dangerous) and has been ferried from family members to family members his whole life and has finally settled with a loving couple and found a place he fits in. Each chapter/episode is usually a different story or encounter, and you can see the cast evolve over time. It has lots of action and many of the original interactions with the scarier spirits are straight out of nightmares. That said, it feels like a warm hug, although many of the stories are bittersweet, they tend to be more sweet than bitter. Mushi-shi is about Ginko, a mushishi who wanders throughout ancient japan selling his wares and helping people who are being affected by mushi, which are essentially oddly-shaped supernatural beings that can only be seen by some people. It's kind of hard to explain what it is that they are, since they aren't based off of any folklore that I know of, though the word mushi derives from the word "insect" in japanese. The job of a mushishi is to help people who are being affected by mushi and to record new treatments. They are like a doctor for supernatural occurrences. Mushi-shi isn't as warm as Natsume's Book of Friends, and each incident in each episode has vastly different consequences. Some end well, some end badly and many land in-between. It is very peaceful, when it's not being horrifying. I'd suggest watching both of these as anime before going to read them, or at the very least, listening to the music while reading (both have their full albums available on youtube), since the music is just as incredible for setting the scene as their art is. Their anime help nail the actual pacing of the stories, letting moments breathe for as long as they really should, but both mediums are incredible.
It's so great that they translate A Winter's promises in English !!! 😭 It's one of my favorite serie EVER ! The perk of being french is that the last book is already out but i'm so scared to read it !!! 😵😅
So happy to see A Winter's Promise shouted out! I can't wait to read the second, and more of the series! I found The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss to be so so atmospheric!
You know what I love about your recommendations videos? You don’t constantly recommend the same 5 books to us. You really look at all the books you’ve read past and present and give us tons of variety. Love that!!
I am new to Booktube, and I just wanted to let you know that your channel is by far my favourite out of all the ones I have tried 😃. I am a huge book nerd, and I find myself really relating to your feelings about books. I read Ava Lavender a few years ago, and it has never left me! I also devoured the Winternight Trilogy, The Starless Sea, and The Shadow of the Wind. You have now given me more ideas though which could be a problem since I literally have hundreds of books on my shelves I haven’t read yet LOL 😂. Happy reading!!
My favourite atmospheric book is definitely The Book Thief. I was dragged into that world and I refused to leave it! Beautiful writing, wonderful characters, an amazing book! I recently posted a video featuring this book and many others that I read a couple of weeks ago!
Another book like the shadow of the wind and a starless sea, with the idea of a magical book discovery, is a discovery of witches by Deborah Harkness. It’s a fantasy trilogy about witches, vampires, and demons, and their origins.
So I just read Gods of Jade and Shadow and I really felt like I was traveling thru 1920s Mexico with Cassiopeia. I also think the author did a really great job of incorporating the culture and history of the region without taking you out of the book but includes a glossary just in case. It reminded me of the Bear and the Nightingale with how that one is rooted in real history and this one takes its roots from Mayan mythology.
These are excellent choices! I've read most of these and would agree with your picks :). I love atmospheric novels, and a couple more I recommend are: The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier The Secret History by Donna Tartt A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman Dracula by Bram Stoker
I'm actually reading The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender for the second time right now. It's definitely an overwhelming emotionally for me.
Strange the dreamer and muse of nightmares are definitely books i'd add to that list! they made me feel all kinds of ways, the combination story and language was just unbelievably gripping and i felt everything the characters felt so deeply
Oh no! I am resisting myself to buy another book this month (already bought 10) but since you love Starless Sea. There is no point in holding it for long. Must get the book.
Nine Coaches Waiting by Mary Stewart is a wonderfully atmospheric gothic novel. Also The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I'm reading The Girl in the Tower now and I'm loving this world. I loved Uprooted and have lately been itching to re-read it. I have Spinning Silver, but might buddy read it with my best friend.
The Mirror's Visitor ! I'm still not over the fact that the series is over 😭 It always makes me so happy to see English speaking booktubers talk about it because I love it so much ❤️ I can't wait for you to read book three ! I've been dying to read The Starless sea but I really want that black edition and I can't find it for a decent price (me, shallow ? absolutely not.)
You need to read Winterwood by Shea Ernshaw like yesterday! So atmospheric, all the spooky, witchy, dark, eerie wood vibes, being snowed in during a blizzard... it was just *chef’s kiss* in terms of atmosphere.
Thank you so much for these recommendations. I love atmospheric, magical realism, lyrical writing, so I'm super excited to read these books. I recently read The Night Circus and loved it, so now I really want to get to The Starless Sea. I also just watched your 2020 anticipated releases as wll. I feel like you and I have very similar taste in books so I really want to read all your recommendations. Robin Hobb is my favourite fantasy author, would love to know how you go with her.
curious if you’ll go back to doing the monthly favs? like music, tv, movies, clothes, food, etc. and in an extension of that what’s your favorite song off of fine line-harry styles ?
The Night Circus, The Orphan’s Tales and Fairyland series by Catherynne Valente, Chime and The Folk Keeper by Franny Billingsley, any book by Eva Ibbotson and Frances Hardinge.
There is just one book you recommend that I want to read. But the other ones that you have mentioned sounds interesting but not sure if I will pick them up but if I do its because of how you talk about them.
Spinning silver is not set in Russia, it's Poland. We've got a little bit of income in our culture (that's why there are a lot of cases when "west" people are confused), but they are also pretty different. For example, the name are not russian names of characters and places, also as Naomi Novik has Polish roots she retails fairytales of her childhood, told by her polish grandmother. Hope you will tell everyone about this in you future videos, and please don't take it personal. Love your videos 🥰
I’m curious about the book the ten thousand doors of January. I think it may be a super atmospheric novel but haven’t heard much about it. Has anyone read it?
I’ve been meaning to read Naomi Novik for so long. I own Uprooted but just haven’t gotten around to it yet. But that’s the case for too many books on my shelf 🥵🥴
I love so many of these and am intrigued by the rest (and this reminds me I need to finish The Bear and the Nightingale series!), except I just read A Winter's Promise and ummm...I will not be continuing that series. It's definitely atmospheric, but I counted the word "lugubrious" at least 5 times, and I have some serious questions about the qualifications of the translator.
The Last Breath by Nicholas Sparks... this is such an atmospheric book. My mom bought me this and I thought I wouldn't like it because I don't like those contemporary love stories but it was so good. You just feel as if you were there in south or North Carolina I don't remember which one it was. And also is heartbreaking and also plays somewhere in Africa (I also don't remember which country) and that's really interesting.
I need to read Spinning Silver but I would definitely recommend Uprooted by Naomi Novik. It’s really good. One of my favorite, favorite books is The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. It’s so atmospheric!

Its all about a reluctant, down his luck man who gets bullied into taking a job as a "copper star" when they were just begining the NYPD. Girl sameeeeeee! The Raven Boys is very atmospheric.
@@win3738 And I've seen so many reviews about it being boring! I finished that book in two sittings!
YES
I was thinking the same thing! I'm actually rereading The Raven Cycle books cause I miss them :,))
If you like atmospheric books, then you have to read The Night Circus
Yes!
Nina truee
That's one of my top favorites!
For sure!

I see the word Atmospheric.
I click like.
I'm a gentleman

"A Winter's Promise" is actually the book that got me out of a reading slump which lasted years! It's amazing! Really different from other books! I'm so happy you enjoyed it too!
this is one of my favourite books!!
I finished The Starless Sea yesterday, and I can't stop thinking about it! It's sooo beautiful!!
I'm currently reading A Winter Promise in french (Les Fiancés de l'Hiver) and the last book just came out. This serie is wonderful!!

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón is amazing. I read it in spanish and I highly recommend it as well. Great video! 🙌🏼
The third book in the "A Winter's Promise" quartet comes out in May, in case you weren't aware! :)
I read it, and i died a little inside ...
I just bought The bear and the nightingale because I saw it in one of your videos!
The winter promise is so brilliant!!! The magic is so good the characters so relatable!
These are excellent choices! I've read most of these and would agree with your picks :). I love atmospheric novels, and a couple more I recommend are:
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
The Secret History by Donna Tartt

Dracula by Bram Stoker
I'm actually reading The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender for the second time right now. It's definitely an overwhelming emotionally for me.
It made me so happy when the first book was Zafon’s!! I’m Spanish and it makes me so happy when I see his work valued outside of my country. :)
I'm Romanian and I read all of Zafon's books and I love them all. I never stopped recommending them and I never will ;))))
I LOVE LA SOMBRA DEL VIENTO
(the shadow of the wind)
Greetings from Mexico Regan 💜💜💜💜

Can you do book talks of the stormlight archive books? Love your videos!
I’m so excited to read The Starless Sea! I’ve also owned Spinning Silver for a while now and you definitely just bumped it up on my tbr ☺️!
Wow I’ve never seen someone talk about Midwinterblood but I’m glad to see it! It’s one of my favourites and is definitely atmospheric!
Shadow of the Wind sounds so great! Loved Starless Sea, so thank you for the recommendation!
Ooooooo I really need to read the shadow of the wind. Have you read Rebecca? It’s super atmospheric too!!!
The Mirror's Visitor ! I'm still not over the fact that the series is over 😭

Mental note to put Winters Promise and Spinning Silver on my TBR!
I’ve never heard of The Shadows of the Wind but I’m sold!
I think Caraval by Stephanie Garber is very atmospheric!
Hi have u read Libba Bray book the diviner’s?? I’m currently the book so far it’s good!! 😊📖
You should definitely read the night circus!
curious if you’ll go back to doing the monthly favs? like music, tv, movies, clothes, food, etc. and in an extension of that what’s your favorite song off of fine line-harry styles ?
Wow these books sound incredible love atmospheric as well.
I literally love ALL your book recommendations 😭
Cute sweater!
Sooo i read the 7 1/2 deaths of Evelyn hardcastle today because of you and I’m so pleased lol
The Night Circus, The Orphan’s Tales and Fairyland series by Catherynne Valente, Chime and The Folk Keeper by Franny Billingsley, any book by Eva Ibbotson and Frances Hardinge.
What a great video. Love the sound of all those books.
There is just one book you recommend that I want to read. But the other ones that you have mentioned sounds interesting but not sure if I will pick them up but if I do its because of how you talk about them.
One of my favourite atmospheric books must be Nightfall by J. Halpern and P. Kujawinski. Gives me shivers just thinking about that book!
I'm currently reading The Missing of Clairdelune 💛
Now I want to read Bear and Nightingale soo much!
Spinning silver is not set in Russia, it's Poland. Thank you for correcting me!! Will def remember this for the future 🤦🏼♀️
I’m curious about the book the ten thousand doors of January. I think it may be a super atmospheric novel but haven’t heard much about it. Has anyone read it?
Just started reading the seven deaths of Evelyn Hard castle from your recommendation loving it so far
Also House Of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig, if you’re looking for a darker atmospheric tale. One of my favorites that I read last year :)
The Thirteenth Tale, The Raven Cycle, The Night Circus.
I NEED STARLESS SEA
The Last Breath by Nicholas Sparks... this is such an atmospheric book. My mom bought me this and I thought I wouldn't like it because I don't like those contemporary love stories but it was so good. You just feel as if you were there in south or North Carolina I don't remember which one it was. And also is heartbreaking and also plays somewhere in Africa (I also don't remember which country) and that's really interesting.
Once Upon A River is definitely right up there with this category
The shadow of the wind is also a translation. It was originally written in Spanish
I need to read Spinning Silver but I would definitely recommend Uprooted by Naomi Novik. It’s really good. One of my favorite, favorite books is The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. It’s so atmospheric!
The Historian has been on my TBR list for a couple years, I keep meaning to read it in October and then not finding time to fit it in.
And I don't know why, UA-cam won't let me see the full response you sent about The Gargoyle, nor can I find it to respond. Gremlins in the wires....
The Night Circus
I think this duology is pretty old, but I just discovered it and it has super cool atmosphere mixed with religion mixed with syfy... Lol. The first book is The Sparrow and its by Mary Doria Russell. Highly recommend!
Ahh, I video I didn't even know I needed! Thank you!😍
Your videos are my favorite ❤❤❤❤
i already KNOW the winternight series is gonna be in this list
Yay they're my jam too!!!
Hi!! Have you read anything by Laura Gallego? She is awesome
It's funny how the most atmospheric books seem to be set in Winter. Burial Rites by Hannah Kent is another historical fiction atmospheric read 😊
When I think of atmosphere I think more in the terms of does the setting have a character of its own? Can you describe the feel of it and can you pinpoint what makes it unique from other books? If you can't then it probably doesn't have that much of an atmosphere.
Great atmospheric adult fantasy series is The Gentleman Bastards Sequence :D
I need to choose between the bear and the nightingale and the starless sea. I have read the night circus and I loved it! But I am intrigued by the bear and the nightingale now. Can somebody who read one of them or both help me out?
I'm about 2 years late, but I can tell you I loved the bear and the nightingale. I read it near Christmas and would definitely recommend reading it in winter to add to the atmosphere. I haven't read starless sea though.
oooo i love that top 👀😍
Amazon says you can pre-order The Memory of Babel to be released on September 8th 2020 🤷♀️💔💔💔 of that's the case I'm seriously considering polishing up my French because I can't wait that much longer 🙃
Valeria Andrea thank you! I just pre-ordered it! I have been checking every couple of weeks and it was never up!
I know you liked "The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August" and that author (Claire North) has a super atmospheric book called 84K!!! Highly recommend!
Please read Northern Lights by Philip Pullman. You would love it! 😍📖✨
Since you obviously like Historical Fiction, and you love Atmosphere, you should read The gods of Gotham by Lyndsay Faye. That whole trilogy gave me vibes from the movie gangs of New York, but the characters you just have to fall in love with! Its all about a reluctant, down his luck man who gets bullied into taking a job as a "copper star" when they were just begining the NYPD. But he ends up discovering that he has a real talent for it, and he makes powerful enemies fighting
For the innocent underdogs. Ugh, 💕 I just love it so much!
Winter Promise great and the next one too but the third book ???
I have an exam season at my Uni for the next month and it feels like I won't be able to read a book ever again in my life
Just seen Human Being - so third book May!
Have you read Naomi Novik’s other retelling?
The fictional world of Spinning Silver is based more on Lithuania than Russia. Just as Novik's Uprooted is based on the Kingdom of Poland. The inspiration comes from the author's half Polish, half Lithuanian heritage :)
I ADORED Midwinterblood. Do you have any recommendations for similar reads?
yarncat books i haven’t read midwinterblood, but from her description it reminds me a bit of moonstone: a boy that never was, not completely the same but they have many similar themes
Do you need to read the seven realms series before shattered realms series
oof i’m interested in “starless sea”
“See What I Wanna See” based around the Lizzie Borden murders! So atmospheric.
midnight at the electric by jodi lynn anderson
The Flower Girls adult thriller is atmospheric!
I am REALLY early! Love ya!
got me at dark and mystery
i read the starless sea last week but I didn’t really understand the last 150 pages... It was beautiful but also very unstructured and i think the author kinda lost the plot at one point :) but it‘s still a lovely story
I think Vicious and Vengeful are *kinda-atmospheric* according to me
