My first ever Cutthroat was in a side channel of the snake river, similar in size to the stream they are fishing, at the base of Grand Teton. I was in my 50s at the time and it was my first trip west for fishing. After scouting downstream I found a good prospect lying in a calm gin-clear pool. I carefully walked downstream to a riffle and crossed so my wake would not disturb the calm water.
Having fished the Frying Pan just a few days before I was still fishing a 6x tippet. I selected a size 18 Adams and gently placed it a few feet upstream of the fish. On the second cast he casually floated up and sipped the fly. It was clearly a big fish. Concern over the thin tippet had me carefully playing the fish, getting him on the reel. After a short fight a gorgeous 29 inch Yellowstone cutthroat yielded to the net. During the fight a hungry mosquito fed greedily on my busy left hand. As soon as the fish was secure in the net I swatted the mosquito. My photos of the fish show the bloody spot on my hand from the smashed bug.
My original intention was to harvest a fish for dinner in the gros venture campground (legal at that point). The fish, the stream, the mountains were so overwhelming I carefully released the fish, insuring that he was rested and in good shape before the release. I celebrated with a nice steak dinner in Jackson.
I’ve caught a lot of cuts since, and many trout of other species, but that fish will always stand out in my mind as the absolute most memorable. A fantastic catch, a sweet memory.

I grew up, and cut my teeth, trout fishing the Catskills. I love the videos, that you guys have done on those waters there, but I really love the great job you guys did on this video. Dubois looks like a real gem, and those Cutties are absolutely gorgeous fish. Thanks for sharing in your adventures. I'm completely jealous lol. Keep up the good work, and the great adventure and videos.

That's what you call fishing, really enjoyed watching, what a beautiful place to fish, stunning fish. A guide with a gun wow, don't see many bears in the UK. Tight lines.

First time I passed through Dubois I camped at a Forest Service lakeside campground just east of Togwotee pass. Seriously beautiful country. This was my first trip that far to the northwest. The second day a pair of USFS rangers came by to advise us that the CG was closing down due to tree fall hazards associated with a predicted severe wind storm and trees weakened by recent drought. Nice folks.
I took advantage of the opportunity to inquire as to how much farther up the road until I reached grizzly bear country. I was headed for Yellowstone and knew they lived there, but I had no idea of their range. The rangers exchanged odd looks, then one said “well, I’m not sure if this helps, but last week a sow with two Cubs walked down the road right where we are standing now”. “Oh”, I said with a bit of a silent gulp.
I’m not paralyzed by FEAR of them, but I have absolute respect for them and work to give them wide berth. I’ve since visited the area three more times, and finally saw my first grizzly on the last visit when he almost ran into my truck as I drove around in Yellowstone.
I’ve never carried a gun while fishing, but I do recognize that a 5-6 weight fly rod would be fairly useless as a weapon against a grizzly, or even a sufficiently angry black bear. Of course, if you DO take a gun, it would be wise to make it a BIG caliber, if not BIGGER. 😳😬😆

Dan, this is a repeat from last year. We put it up as operators were hurt so bad by Covid and our hope is this will give them more business in 2021. Glad you liked it!

You missed the best part of the Wind River. Next time you make it to Wyoming, book a float trip down the Wind River on the reservation below Boysen Reservoir. You'll catch some BIG fish down there.

What river was that first section of the video? It was absolutely gorgeous! I’ll be heading to Wyoming in July to fish the upper Green but this looks awesome and not too far from where we will be. Feel free to DM if you don’t want to blow up the stream name on the comment board.
