The zoo has gone through some really tough times recently so nice to see some great content! Obviously COVID really damaged their potential to stay open, and then last year we had some HUGE flooding across NZ, and some of the zoo's enclosures were completely wiped out, some are still being rebuilt and may never open again. But they've done amazing to keep it going as one of the best zoos! We love it.
just got this in my recommendations and glad to see auckland zoo getting some love! as a biology student in the city it’s great to see the appreciation of aucklands deification to the zoo as a vessel for conservation and learning as opposed to entertainment. some of the pronunciation gave me a laugh too! hope you enjoyed the hikes as well as auckland has a pretty solid range of hikes and reserves like tiritiri matangi and shakespeare regional park which i feel you would have loved. ma te wa!
Auckland zoo was amazing. Happy to hear from another biology student!! I did get to visit Tiritiri Mantangi Island, the video is up on my channel be sure to take a look when you get a chance :)
Auckland Zoo has changed SOOOO much since I was there. The lab/vet station was never there. The Orangutan and ape enclosure never used to be that big, etc. Holy crap, I've got to go back!!!
It was very impressive i definitely recommend going to see it!
Eyyyyy less goo I love seeing other people that are not from NZ doing stuff like this
It was awesome! Both the people and the country! Such an amazing place :)
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I was thinking the same thing you said, we can't just rock up and see the animals sitting there, bored and un-naturally. We, the humans, have to slow down, be patient, and watch them in a more natural environment. I totally support conservation zoos and parks. ❤
Im glad you enjoyed the video. I share the same opinions as you!!
Kia Ora! I'm so glad to see you enjoyed our Zoo! I went a few weekends ago after not having been for about 7 years and the changes were absolutely mindblowing. The tigers walking across your head was unbelievable and it was my first time seeing a cub. Such a magical moment :) And the large primate exhibits were insane! In New Zealand we take conservation of wildlife and environment quite seriously so it's fantastic to hear that those values reflect in our Zoo compared to overseas ones! Kia kaha :)
Auckland zoo is probably the coolest thing in the entire city, too bad you have to be 15 or above to go alone without an adult 😭. I actually got to go into all of those vet buildings and even in the Elephant enclosure when I was younger. Whilst in there I got to feed Burma. Amazing Zoo.
That sounds like such an awesome experience getting to go inside the elephant enclosure. Definitely an amazing zoo!
Why do you have to be 15 or above?
@@mnj640 so that you don't be irresponsible and immature around the animals.
How would someone under 15 even get to the zoo and it wouldn't be very common for someone under 15 to travel to the Zoo by themselves any way so it makes sense lol.
@@pkdsince05 public transport is a huge thing here in Auckland, you have to take some busses and you’ll get there. And it happens quite a lot, it’s just they don’t trust irresponsible children and 15 is a common age of maturity.
Bless my UA-cam algorithm for bringing me this - Love from a Zoology, Ecology and Conservation Student
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Fun fact, if you came across a more brave wood pigeon in one of the large aviaries (big green and white borb), her name is Rui! She likes to sit around the "do not touch" sign, because thats where keepers will give her treats :D
Thats so funny! Unfortunately I dont think Rui and I got to interact :(
The Māori name for the wood pigeon is called Kereru but in parts of Canterbury the Māori word for wood pigeon is kūkupa.
When I was young the family went to the zoo and we had a ride on jamuna the elepha😮nt. It wasn’t last week I can tell you,I am now 76 and still remember it well .The only other elephant I know was Peggy, 1 of Bullens herd, what a lovely temperament
The zoo has come along way since then!
wish you had have filmed the giraffes, lions, rhinos etc, bedridden for 20+ years i would've loved to see it. used to go there when i was a kid in the 80s and i didn't recognise a single thing.
I was trying to show more of the new zealand wildlife that most zoos don’t have on display. Pretty much any zoo you go to in the world is going to have lions, giraffes and rhinos, not they are not amazing. They just were not my target for this video. Thanks for watching.
Can you maybe get out in a wheelchair
Another great video !! Loved it
Glad you enjoyed it!
loved this! just a guy with a hobby obsessing over it and making it a video :) we need more creators like this, just genuine stuff!
Thank you for such a very kind comment! Glad you enjoyed the video :)
was waiting for another upload!! great video
Hope you enjoyed it!
That was great thanks. Wish i could visit
Thank you my friend. Hopefully one day you can witness it :)
Another fantastic watch, your videos are brilliant and you certainly deserve more recognition. Me and I'm sure others as well love and appreciate the effort that you put into these videos. Keep up the good work! 👍😎 Also whilst you are in the area I would highly recommend going to Kelly Tarlton's Sea Life Aquarium. It's a great day out with some great animals!
Hi @Fin9315, really appreciate your kind comment and I am glad to hear your are enjoying the videos. I did get to visit the Sea Life Aquarium during my stay in Auckland it was a really nice facility unfortunately I didnt have enough footage for a separate video but I included some bonus clips at the end the end of this Zoo tour video :)
Nau mai haere mai! You are welcome! Thank you for your video.
Thank you my friend. Glad you liked it!
thanks for the video, ill have to go now!!!
great watch! - those turtles are huge
I know right! They were super cool
thank you for this video, for sharing this with the people. from palmerston north new zealand. stay safe in your travels man
Thank you my friend! I am glad you enjoyed the video! It was awesome
the aquarium clips were awesome
Thank you, im glad you liked them.
The Auckland zoo is amazing. Me and my family go there lots. I like your channel ❤
It really was amazing. Thank you for the kind comment :)
The zoo has changed massively since I last went there maybe 45 years ago, cages everywhere in those days, I distinctly remember an orangutan in a very small cage smoking cigarette butts that people threw at him, I remember I loved the zoo then, but it seems like it is a much better place for the animals and the visitors these days.
I think its safe to say every zoo has changed for the better from 45 years ago. Auckland zoo has definitely redeemed its self with that orangutan exhibit and many of the exhibits they have on display.
Can’t wait to go to Auckland one day!
Do it! But make sure you go to australia first lol ;)
Don’t do it lol. Don’t come to Auckland dude probably get shot in town. It’s not a joke here, anyone who says otherwise is not a kiwi and definitely not a person who goes outside and sees the condition of this place. Kiwis are leaving for Australia for obvious reasons. The smart, capable ones anyway. Only the country is beautiful but there aren’t any jobs out there for the good honest folk.
I just came across your channel, thanks for showing the zoo, ive lived in new Zealand for the past 24yrs and ive never been to the zoo or the aquarium, now i know where im taking my female friend for her birthday next month, im going to surprise her and take her to both places and not tell her haha
Sounds like an awesome day out! You will have a great time.
Heeeyyyy
How was nz????
Ive been at auckland zoo millions of times!
Glad u loved it
New Zealand was incredible, I just wish I had more time!!
Orangs are the most arboreal ape. They really need space to climb so the installation of the canopy walk was designed to give them as much climbing room as possible. Far more than a single enclosure could give them. And yes we have mostly birds and reptiles.....only two native mammals, both small insectivorous bats, so not a lot of native "animals". Theres a lot of introduced mammals tho....sadly mostly pests.
You are correct!
if you get to go down to Christchurch they have a pretty good zoo as well called Orana it's the only open-range zoo in New Zealand so it's quite a bit different. Wellington Zoo is also pretty good
Thanks for sharing this, I wish I knew about Orana while I was in New Zealand. Unfortunately I’m back home now. Maybe next time :)
Ah! you went to Kelly Tarltons as well? Ka Pai! Awesome video!
I sure did! Thank you!
i was thinking since when did they move the whole kelly tarltons to auckland zoo?? hahaha
It once had Polar Bears but realised bears in captivity suffered too much psychologically so never got them in again. Really great modern zoos know they should put the animals above human entertainment.
100% i did not know they had bears before
my father works at the zoo, I love going here so much. I go every weekend :D
What happened to the seal enclosure there’s been no seal for the longest time. Are they going to bring seals back??
@@katyngah-ere4942 I'm pretty sure they are bringing them back, it's just a change to enclosure, from what I've heard.
When I was there, they had the kekeno on display. Not sure what has happened since.
You are super lucky to have your dad working there, it was an incredibly clean and well cared for zoo
great vid, ive lived in Auckland for 35 years, been to the zoo all through the years, about 20 years ago those little monkeys, the ones that are small enough to fit in your hand when they are young and mischievous had a poorly designed cage where they escaped so often the keepers just left it decided to just bribe them with anything they wanted to stay, numerous times i would go straight to their cage with a punnet of strawberries and a couple of them would jump out of the gap in the cage and maul me with their tiny hands and strong gripping tails,, they would eat a strawberry or 2 then run back in the cage,, a year later they had sealed the cage ,, now with the new layout i wouldnt have a clue where they are, the galapagos tortoise enclosure used to be a small sand covered mound with an ankle height chain you could walk right up to them and touch them , but there were signs saying not to, but i definitely have pics of me as a kid sitting next to one of those big fellows , im glad they got a better enclosure with a wallow hole and some greenery cause that sandy mound was depressing
That is hilarious!! Thanks for sharing, that put a smile on my face. Even I was a little confused with the layout but I was equally immersed in the design of the zoo.
Modern zoos are about conservation. So they make the enclosures for the animals to have the best life. If you get to see them it’s a bonus .
100%
Very cool orangutan exhibit.
It really was! Thanks for the comment
Good Zoo, San Diego Zoo and Australia Zoo would be top 2
Saving this comment and adding those two zoos right up on my list! Thanks for the suggestion. I will have a behind the scenes of the toronto zoo video coming very shortly! Stay tuned for that :)
@@ECO-logynext time your in Oz go to Adelaide zoo
There are only two native mammals, both bats, and a bunch of native reptiles. NZ was cut off from Gondwana before the asteroid (dinosaur) mass extinction. In other words, before mammals started to proliferate and evolve to take up all the niches left when the non-avian dinosaurs became extinct. So most of the niches in New Zealand are taken up by birds, unfortunately many of them became extinct after humans arrived, so we no longer have the world's tallest bird, not the world's largest eagle any more. Not to mention a hoard of beautiful song birds like the huia.
You are correct! Very disappointing:(
And the amazing Mao thanks to humans(specifically The Māori or Polynesians) >:[
(Im a Kiwi/New Zealander myself)
The reason you wouldn't have seen large animals in the New Zealand exhibit is that before humans made their way here and introduced various species. The only mammals here were a couple of species of small bats. There were various reptiles and some very large insects. But a large variety of bird species. A lot of them were adapted to living on the ground because of the lack of predators.
Hi @garythomson713 thanks for the comment. You are 100% correct. Keep an eye out for my next video where I try to cover exactly what you are detailing!
Yeah I went twice it is a nice one but nothing compares to those in France 😊 (zoo de de Beauvale)
Oh wow! You are the first to recommend a zoo in France!
@@ECO-logy yeah have a look if you travel to France :)
Definately a nice zoo but in terms of zoos Australia has the advantage of the variety of unique wildlife that they can display which you are unlikely to find in other zoos around the world. Plenty of zoos and wildlife parks in Australia are focusing more on conservation work and those on display are often the ones that are unable to be returned to their natural habitat. There is also more emphasis placed on larger more natural enclosures including those where animals like kangaroo, wallabies emu etc. run free and people are able to interact with them. I personally think that the Australia Zoo would be up there challenging for the best in the world and we have visited a few of them over the years including San Diego. In terms of backdrop for the animals Sydneys Taronga Zoo with its view of the Opera House and the harbour bridge is something humans would pay a fortune for.
So basically your selling point who has more and the prettier views?. You are completely missing the point and purpose of a zoo in the first place. The point being that zoos are put in place to create awareness, for the general public who wouldn’t otherwise be able to see these animals in their natural environments or how hard they have it in the wild. Seeing the animal in person creates an emotional attachment and call to action where the visitor would hopefully feel compelled to invest interest and passion in helping that animals wild counterparts from declining. You imply that having a bigger variety of wildlife is a winning point?. The goal is to not have so many animals in a zoo to begin with. The more animals in zoos, the worse it must be for them out there in the wild. While we can champion the likes of these incredible zoos for doing their part for conservation and preservation, you need to remember this isn’t for fun, games or a beauty contest. Your point about the view of the opera house and harbour being a big plus is pretty much irrelevant to the fact that the whole idea with visiting a zoo is to believe you have immersed yourself into a natural environment as much as possible. As stunning as Sydney harbour is, seeing a city scape whilst trying to imagine an Asian elephant or giraffe in its natural environment is kind of an eyesore.
Wish i visited the Taronga zoo in Sydney, this is the second comment talking about how nice of a zoo it is!
@@taniavankemp4394 finished your lecture Maybe some people just take their kids to the zoo because they are nice places and they get to see exotic animals that they will probably never see in real life.
I’ve been around 1 years ago not much animals there!
100% not as many species at other zoos but the quality at which these animals were being kept and the care that has gone into the design of the enclosures really blew me away. Its much better than the stuff I have seen at other zoos that seemingly have “every animal on the planet” but I am probably biased.
the whale skeleton was cool, if only u got to see the real thing😅
I wish so too!
You have to go to Kaikoura for whales.
You no film our Merecats 😮
No I didnt see them
“Lots of foilage” Go to South Africa where the zoos they have there is thousands of hectares of land where the animals can do what they like not what you want them to do.
So true! Im in Texas right now doing turtle research, stay tuned for that! Ill be in Kenya in august, let me know what you want to see!!
"Foil-age"
Thanks for the comment
In answer to your question,I would say the Berlin and San Diego zoos are better. And there would be plenty more.
ofc, that's not to say there's anything wrong with Auckland zoo.
No one has commented the Berlin zoo yet so thanks for putting that one on my radar! I keep seeing San Diego Zoo comments so that is now high up on my list!!
He complained that there was no animals in the native NZ exhibit...... Well I sure hope it doesn't.
Haha thanks for the comment
I wonder if jacob-hoff the vet is still there
Unfortunately not. Richard retired about 15 years ago
@@Opti-Mystic I worked with him at wpz ,long time ago
Unfortunately I didn’t get to interact with any of the zookeeps/vets this trip but maybe in the future:)
@@ECO-logy is Anna the orangutan still there
I met her when she was 2.
Unfortunately there were outcrys at how Miami Zoo and a Japanese Zoo were treating our national treasure the Kiwi. But they've apologised and will do better. No wombats at the Zoo anymore!
Wow I did not know this, I dont think I captured it as well as I wanted to in this video but the kiwi exhibit here was insane!!!
@@ECO-logy yep. Tiktok video shown by miami zoo of a kiwi in a horrible habitat for the bird made like all new zealanders comment on the video about how its bad etc, they apologized a few weeks later and had it fixed! us kiwis don't mess with the kiwi bird lol
wheres the elephant giraffe
Thanks for the comment
Yes, there are African giraffes and an elephant
is The island tiritiri
It sure is! The island tour video is up on my channel, be sure to check it out!!

Why you don't SEO your videos properly? don't you want to improve your channel?
I definitely want to improve the channel. What ideas do have for improving the SEO of the channel.
It would be best if you optimized your channel first,
created a good channel banner, created an Icaching thumbnail,
and gave SEO-friendly titles to your videos, and SEO the videos well,
and uploaded videos like regular time.
But don't worry I can help you If you want.
@@Sohag-qh7pn These are great ideas definitely something I’ve been meaning to do just haven’t got around to doing. Definitely PM me id love some extra help and ideas.

Auckland Zoo is too small if your an animal lover. Taronga Zoo in Sydney way more impressive.
Definitely regret not visiting Taronga zoo when I was in Sydney
@@ECO-logy We spent a whole day there from the time it opened until it closed and we still didn't get to see everything. You can book an overnight stay there and get intimate animal encounters after hours.
I will have to remember this if I ever get to go back to Australia, thanks for sharing
Fol i age, not foil age
Correct!
No you are not you used to ride elephants bad
I mean, theres a reason they stopped doing those almost 30 years ago. They knew they were bad, so they ended that activity.
@@jeffery9543 then is there any elephants at Auckland zoo. If so how much room do they or just 1 have. If only 1 again bad as elephants are herd animals and need room to maintain a healthy body and mind
