  • Adam Savage (Mythbusters) and Randall Munroe (xkcd) are two of the best science communicators in the country. Join these two STEM icons on stage at BookCon for a remarkably smart and bizarre conversation. Munroe recently completed his latest book, HOW TO?, his latest work based on his wildly popular webcomic, xkcd, and Savage discusses EVERY TOOL’S A HAMMER: Life Is What You Make It, his new book that shares his golden rules of creativity, from finding inspiration to following through and successfully turning your idea into reality.

It's obvious that Adam is the more famous one, but I really love how he is actually having a fanboy moment. Come on, xkcd is awesome

It seems obvious in hindsight, but until watching this I hadn’t fully realized that Randall has managed to turn falling down Wikipedia rabbit holes into a profession.

To be fair to him, I fall down rabbit holes but I have neither the artistic talent nor the NASA level coding and math skills to prove any of the things I think upon and monetise the result. So he's doing more than a wiki-walk (TVTropes will ruin your life®)

It's also true. If you glue wood properly, and then impact it hard enough, the wood will fail before the glue joint does.

A fun glue trick combination i like to use for all sorts of projects is twine and wood glue. Wrap the twine around the joint you need to be strong, and add the wood glue and it becomes like wrapping that joint in wood. Makes a kick-ass popsicle tower.

Coincidentally, cyanoacrylate glue happens to be my go-to as well, especially for plastics, but I also keep a stock of wood glue and 5-minute epoxy on hand.

Trying to find the setup to Kurt Vonnegut's favourite joke, which Adam referred to, has turned into a rabbit-hole of fruitless internet searches. How Meta, I suppose.
