- Finally! Factory really did get released this time. I must admit, it feels good to revisit these full, non-challenge playthroughs many years later. [Part 1]
For this video, I play Horn of the Abyss (HotA), a fan-made mod for Heroes of Might and Magic III. HotA adds many changes to the game such as balance tweaks and the Cove faction while retaining the standard Heroes III feel. I explore some of these in the video. HotA is certainly a mod worth trying, if you haven't given it a shot already.
Here we try out the second HotA-exclusive faction known as Factory. HotA now has a total of 11 available towns for players to use, and this one is no slouch. With one exception, every Factory unit has special abilities (yes, plural) and some of them even have good stats as well. In addition, they give you access to not one, but TWO Tier 7 units. Some of the heroes have interesting specialties as well, but none of them appear to be too overpowered. Overall, this faction seems to be strong and well-rounded, but not game-breaking. While Factory isn't my cup of tea, I believe that it is at least worth trying out.

*1. What mods do you use for Heroes III? / What version of the game are you using?*
I usually play Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death with the HD mod (downloadable from sites.google.com/site/heroes3hd/). In this video, I use the mod Horn of the Abyss (also known as HotA).
The HD mod is responsible for most of the features that you see in my videos. Note that the Heroes III HD mod is not compatible with Ubisoft's HD Edition on Steam.
*2. How do I get your version of the game?*
Shadow of Death is functionally the same (e.g. there are no gameplay differences) as the Heroes III Complete Edition, which you can get from www.gog.com/game/heroes_of_might_and_magic_3_complete_edition for relatively cheap.
Horn of the Abyss can be obtained from download.h3hota.com/HotA_setup.
*3. How do you see how far units can move in combat?*
This is one feature of the HD mod (see FAQ #1) and can be done by mousing over a unit and holding down the CTRL key.
*4. What are the hotkeys that you use?*
This is one feature of the HD mod (see FAQ #1). The most frequent hotkeys that I use for army management are:
- CTRL+Click to create a 1-stack
- ALT+Click to group up all units of the same type into one big stack
- SHIFT+Click to split a stack into two halves
- CTRL+SHIFT+Click to fill up all remaining empty slots with a 1-stack

*5. How do you display the extended hero details while setting up a map?*
This is one feature of the HD mod (see FAQ #1) and can be done simply by right-clicking on a hero's portrait while selecting a hero. Note that Single Scenarios do not support this feature.
*6. How do you step on the same square your hero is on? / How do you access Water Wheels, Windmills, Mystical Gardens, Two-Way Monoliths and Subterranean Gates without moving your hero?*
Pressing the Space Bar key will cause your hero to step on the same square that they are currently on, allowing them to move through Two-Way Monoliths and Subterranean Gates at will. The Space Bar key can also be used on Water Wheels, Windmills, Mystical Gardens, and other map objects.
Note that this feature is only available in versions of Heroes III that come later than Restoration of Erathia, meaning that this cannot be done in Ubisoft's HD Edition on Steam.
*7. How can I get my unit animations in combat to be as fast as yours?*
To get accelerated unit animations, download crAnim.txt from heroesportal.net/getfile.php?file=/files/information/16/Cranim.txt and put it into the Data folder of your Heroes III directory.
*8. Why not play a match without rules?*
I plan to do a no holds barred playthrough in the far future, but there's a specific approach I would use for such a match that I don't want to showcase at this time.

fun fact: since you can no longer flee casting a spell on the first turn as the attacker, all the armageddon cheese strats died out. but now that the crimson couatl is in the game, and can be invulnerable for the whole turn you arma, it's back. At speed 15, fortress, stronghold, cove, necro, and tower are all shit out of luck and once again return to the age of fire
Do you think that factory is good or bad?
You can also revisit a square by presing the gate icon on the right in Hota.

It's not about being the best player. The commentary is fun and useful. I could watch better HOMM3 players but they barely talk or explain what they're doing which makes for a UA-cam experience that isn't worth my time.

First of all, fantastic to see MeKick uploading again. Truly the GOAT of HOMM3 playthroughs. For those who haven't seen his mind-blowing challenge videos: you're missing out on something for sure!
Second of all, my thoughts on Factory thus far:
- A HOMM creature with the name of an actual, non-mythological animal (Armadillo): it remains bizarre to me. Olgoi-Khorkois are mythological worms in the Gobi desert at least!
- There are a whole lot of gimmicks in this faction, which probably makes it hard to use as a whole, but relatively easy to exploit when used partially
- Having two tier 7 users with normal growth doesn't seem balanced to me. Juggernauts' special ability seems to be very strong too, at least against AI
- Breath attack and a potent permanent resurrection for your two best units is pretty OP for an otherwise already respectable tier 2 unit
- Olgoi-Khorkois special ability seems super cool to me, in part because it's hard to abuse
- Ranged units on the map not being an issue as long as you have some Bounty Hunters offers quite a big advantage
- Same goes for your buffed Master Gremlins as a tier 1 unit
- The bank not charging any interest doesn't strike me as logical and makes the one thing holding this faction back (the cost) much less of a problem
- I'm curious on how one would go about when rushing a map with this faction
- Factory doesn't see to have a single bad unit, just some mediocre ones (Armadillos, Couatls, maybe Olgoi-Khorkois (not sure yet). All the others are strong to very strong
- When battling an army of Factory, you have to... factor in so much extras: breath attack, the possibility to repair, exploding robot spiders that don't take retaliation, a worm eating your dead stacks, an unshootable shooter, a temporarily invincible flying ferret that can still hit you, not gathering your units in front of the tier 7 Transformer. It's so much that applying regular tactics becomes less relevant
- Much like the guns in the pirate-themed Cove faction, I don't really like robots in the medieval fantasy world of HOMM, but I've gotten used to Cove as well, so I'll manage lol
- Never the less, the HOTA team did a great job in terms of creativity, design, atmosphere and testing!
- Hero designs are excellent too, cool biographies as well. None of them seems OP either

@@tiendoan6417one of the reasons propably why you have trubbel sleeping is you watching your tv or phone. Blue Light makes it harder to sleep as it engage the brain different.

I'm glad you updated your Factory video, Mekicks. The last Factory video was just really poor audio and video, literally stared at a blank screen for 6 hours waiting for something to happen. Not gonna lie, it did get quite boring.
Easily THE best h3 channel. These videos give me something positive, even if I watch them or play them while Im doing something else. With Factory I hope you keep doing videos (challenges) more often!

also i'd like to point out just how amazing hota's music is. i believe the HOTA people credit the music to Docent Picolan, the head of the project, who tragically passed away. Paul Romero agreed to finish his work. Paul Romero also was one of the composers for might and magic, the rpg series that predates homm, starting with the 6th game. the entire rpg series has great ost, worth checking out.
according to another poster, the music you hear here is by Docent Picolan. the score Romero worked on was used in campaign instead, it is at least one track - the factory town theme.

I don't blame you! I've said in the past that when Factory released, I would release my playthrough for it immediately afterward, but I'm not the best at fulfilling all the time estimates I give to others for my content :P
I'm actually a bit disappointed that I released this video so late, but the timing of Factory's release happened to coincide with a busy weekend for me (e.g. the annual New Year's Civ 3 stream).

Btw, regarding the mechanics and their ability to repair mechanical units I'm pretty sure it was inspired by Heroes 5 and the ability of gremlins to repair, well, mechanical units (although the academy only has one mechanical unit in their roster so the ability is twice as valuable in the factory).

I've played many years Homm4 and I see the inspiration behind this patch... Academy had halflings, Treasury (bank, sort of), dragon golems, etc. Also, the existence of choice on every tier 3 and 4 (that was max) units all around, the external dwelings stacking . I like it

In your opinion, will this faction change the PvP a lot? I like the idea of pairing engineers and automatons, could bring more interesting strategies. At the same time, bounty hunters feel as balanced as vampire lords in SOD.

I'm sorry to hear about your tinnitus, but I'm glad that my videos were of use to you while you were recovering!
Factory has really become one of my favorite towns to play, the HotA devs did a good job with it. I often find myself splitting up into two separate armies: the "organics" on one side with Halflings, Sandworms and Coatls (the 'dillos are tanky but often too slow for my liking) and the "mechanicals" on the other (engineers, automatons, gunslingers and juggernauts). A good, big group of Juggernauts/Dreadnauts with a team of engineers behind them to heal damage is extremely tanky and hard to beat in a lot of situations...if you can afford them.
This is so good, made me play H3 again after a long time. Thnx!

My pleasure! Regarding Dury, I did notice him. After having used some of the new heroes here, Dury (and maybe Henrietta or Sam) would probably be my go-to picks in a serious match.

If nobody corrected the record, Romero did offer to help finish off Docent's (RIP) theme but ended up redoing it completely into something that sounded very different so the ingame one was done by someone else, they used Romero's theme as the campaign theme instead

1:34:20 actually heroes 4 music is from commercial library. I forget the exactly name, but something like "100 celtic motives".
And you can hear "heroes 4 sea theme" in the game series "Sea dog" in any tavern.
I love everything about Factory except for the fact there's no interest on that loan you take from the bank :D Immersion-breaking!

Pretty much. The way I heard it, the one in charge of the music, from the hota team, passed away during the covid outbreak and Romero helped finish it.
Your favourite is rampart? Side story about it: I played just a little heroes 6 when it came out - it wasn't great and also suffering from some bugs, but I put the game down and never returned. I didn't play enough to hear all the music and didn't know it was still Romero team. Later, like just about 2 years ago I tried heroes 5.5mod and it blew me away. It has amazing music and I thought somehow some fans remade heroes 3 and 5 music, but it's actually heroes 6 music added in. Took me a while to find it on UA-cam as I had no idea, but Romero remade some heroes 3 towns into adventure map music, and "Elven Forest" is the best that rampart has ever sounded. I like it way more as the heroes 6 version.

The Armadillo special ability is that when you haste them they roll up into a ball while moving
I noticed that midway through the match, but I was thinking more along the lines of a special ability used for combat ;)
