We usually travel from point A to B but never think about stopping and exploring on our travels. Thank You Jeff and Sarah for filling in the gaps.

During the California Gold Rush, my great grandfather came from Sonora, Mexico, up “camino del diablo” to yuma crossing at 15 yrs old on his way to the Sierras. We found him in the 1852 census in “Chinese camp” near Sonora Ca. We don’t know if he found his riches in the gold fields, very few did, but he was around that area when this town was booming.

Seeing cemeteries destroyed simply hurts my heart. Thanks Jeff for sharing my local history. I learn more from you than what I was supposed to learn in school. Even books devoted to California history used in our schools today, don't share the knowledge that you provide. Has any school ever invited you to speak? If not, they are wasting a great resource! 12:55 Back story
13:09 First photograph I've ever seen of Laurel Hill Cemetery in San Francisco--the one near the Lonely Mountain
13:10 The cemetery is 'dismantled', and moved to 'Cypress', in Colma, California (the newly-founded City of the Dead)
13:16 I Followed by Jeff, speaking about the story of moving the bodies out of SF, to Colma--Jeff, you legend 👏👏👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌 It was an APPALLING thing to have done. There is a term for the waxy state of a body, post-mortem: ADIPOCERE, also known as 'corpse wax', grave wax or mortuary wax, is a wax-like organic substance formed by the anaerobic bacterial hydrolysis of fat in tissue, such as body fat in corpses (famously referred to in bodies drowned in shipwrecks, the corpses at the bottom of Lake Superior, victims of the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, being just one example).

I've driven by this place many times Jeff, and wondered about that old brick building. There was a trailer backed up to there for a while and then they were evicted and someone put up the fence around it to keep the homeless from camping out. Yes it is sad that history has been decimated and neglected. I have walked through that little cemetery wondering how many have been laid to rest that we will never know about. Thank you for your research and your time in bringing this video to our attention and I appreciate all that you do for your channel.

My father in laws family were in Springfield and mined there. I am so glad you did a video on Springfield, even if there is barely anything left. It is the History of the area and the gold miners who lived there. When I was in Columbia, there was a reenactment going on. One of the men dressed up as a civil war soldier in Columbia told me in character that Joseph Logan buried there at the Springfield cemetery was one of the men in his troop. It was really neat to be told the story in character.

I remember when we used to call Corning "The Olive Capitol of the World", I think it was false advertising, lol. We did and it still does have alot of olives 😃, maybe in California, but the world...?, lol. I think Gerber was famous for being a railroad center for Southern Pacific at one time. I do remember taking a tour of a man's home in Gerber that had a huge model train display of the trains and tracks. He opened it to the public every other year I think. Maybe you went there for that. I looked it up and shoot, in my high school years, I would drive up and visit a cousin that lived near Columbia State Park. I commented before we watched your video, shoot, its right off the departure end of Columbia Airport. Then, there you were! Off the departure end of the airport that I used fly out of over 40 years ago. Isn't it amazing, you can be so close to history and never know it. I grew up in Murphy's. I only discovered Columbia as an adult. Did not know the cemetery, fascinating. I will have to check it out. Thank you so much. Side note, in Buena Vista Park in San Francisco the gutters and walking path are lined with headstones from when they moved everybody to Colma

Always informative. It is sad to see the condition of old cemeteries in our country.

Sad History. I too have ancestors that left Wisconsin around the same dates as this for the Gold Rush. One Going to San Francisco & the Rest going to Oregon. They nust have given up on the Prospects of Gold. Thank you Jeff. Sometimes We Dont k ow what We'll Find. Your Reports are informative & done will. Sometimes even the gross stories are needed to be heard so they aren't forgotten...haha i can hear my Folks saying Best Forgotten. But they have been gone for Decades & its a Different Time. They say to preserve History so it isn't repeated. I agree. I left my hometown of 58 years, 4 generations in the same home because they had utterly Destroyed the History in my Town. It made me cry many times. I just couldn't watch it any longer. The last historic building they were getting ready to tear down was an old stagecoach stop. I contacted SOHO. Save Our History Organization & it didn't look like they could save it either. The Bible even says Not to Tear Down the Old Landmarks.
