- Upon being given advanced notice of maintenance on the Illinois Street bridge, I headed over to the industrial part of San Francisco to see the SF Bay Railroad test it. We see them do just that, as well as special views from the cab, courtesy of the gracious and friendly SFBR crew. The UP "South City Switcher" also makes an appearance. Enjoy.
I really like watching the trains switching at the Port. There's just something about the old industrial area that makes it a whole lot more interesting.
Beautiful ALCO engine!
They're well taken care of.
I hear the south city ring and run to the track.... JOY>>>>>Love that little S-2 Grampa ran it... HEY MIKIE....
I didn't know this railroad still existed! Good to see an ALCo here in the Bay Area!
+BNSF1995 It's always been around. Though the railroad has undergone a few name changes, it's still more or less the same railroad it has been for more than 50 years. I agree, it's awesome to have a place to go to get my Alco fix!
how many cars is that train pulling?
Worked a couple Santa Fe S-2’s in Argentine many years ago. The black w/ yellow stripping reminds me of the 1940’s & early 50’s Santa Fe yard switcher paint scheme.
@@usm-4kagnew165 Frisco with yellow on black, SP with orange on black, classic early switcher look. Always black.
You got cab footage i bet that was AWESOME!! Lucky guy
Great to see a 1944 switcher still at work and in San Francisco.
I remember the engine barn being on the Embarcadero, has that area changed or what! Glad to see a little blue collar left in town. Thanks for posting.
+mythicmesa Indeed it has changed a ton. It's a shame this is the only segment of the former State Belt left, though it's good we still have this at least. Thanks for viewing!
Lucky you. I got to have a real nice chat with the engineer when we were storing some items at the storage lockers next door and ran across the facility. He kindly offered to give me a ride if I was around when they would be running. Sadly, I was moving out of the Bay Area shortly after and never got the chance.
Yeah, their engineer is a really awesome guy. He recently got a side job working the NWP right in my back yard, so I've gotten to know him on some level. Always fun to scoot around with them.
Great photography of a lovely little Alco. I was out visiting 'Frisco in 2010, wish I'd known this was still in operation, I certainly would have taken the time to see it.
+Michael Eggleston Thanks! Honestly, back in 2010 I myself didn't even know about this. I was told about the operation from another friend. There's always next time though! The SFBR has been operating more frequently in recent weeks. Thanks for viewing!
Great footage keep em coming
Nice shots. That old S-2 looks and sounds great considering it's, what, 70 or so years old.
Nice. Spent time down there in 2014. Will plan again going for an ALCO fix on my next visit in September.
Try to make it soon, as the SFBR has already ordered a new switcher.
What a beautiful sound!!!
Indeed, a WWII era diesel still earning its keep 70 years after it was built is something marvelous.
I like that type of stripe paint color scheme on diesel locomotives.
Same here, the safety striping really adds character to a locomotive.
Did not know SF even had a railroad line besides Caltrain.
Yup.
I see 23 and 25 sitting there off of Cargo and always wondered what they did during the day. I drive past at 11:30 pm and sometimes the crew is loading dirt (I think) into hoppers.
+WikdSeafood You got it. Dirt is their main commodity. They put together the "dirty dirt" trains that get handed off to UP and taken to Utah. Thanks for viewing!
Like that horn
Excellent video!
+chris319 Thanks Chris!
Good video. Looks like the same passenger cars and engine in Chicago.
Yeah, Caltrain uses a lot of the same gallery cars and F40s that Metra does. Caltrain will soon be going electric though, so that parallel will no longer be visible unfortunately.
wow! what a col switcher!
+Christopher Taylor Indeed, Alcos are very cool!
very nice video thank you
+panzer501xx Thanks! More to come...
This Railroad really needs to get more funding. I want to see SD70ACes in this paint scheme!
You don't need to see the engine to know it's an Alco.Just listen to the burbling sound.I was lucky as a small boy in early 60,s. The Illinois Northern had 4 Alco S 2's
+Alan Sklenar Indeed, it's a unique sound in NorCal nowadays. It's become rare enough out here that you can tell right away what it is. I wish I could have seen the day and age you saw. Thanks for viewing!
Great video!
Thanks Jimmy!
THought this was about "switching" but all it shows are scenes of the loco!
VIVA THE ALCO S-2'S!!!!!
+Jonathan Caswell Amazing to think how long they've stood up father time and defied the odds. They're older than most EMD's now too!
when does the SF Bay RR run their trains? I live fairly close by yet i've never seen one.
Usually 5 days a week, early mornings are common.
Great video! What video camera was this recorded with?
Thanks. I used a Canon Vixia HF S30 for this video.
thanks you! excellent!
+Lon Shaffer Thanks!
Where does the dirt come from? Dredging?
Where does it go?
In our area, trains like that haul garbage from NYC.
The dirt mostly comes from local construction projects, as I understand it. The dirt is shipped off to Utah.
@@Alwaystrains Must be contaminated dirt. Good clean fill dirt is valuable close to its source.
Awesome!
+K4JW Thanks!
can I ask are there other alco S2 videos I can watch? I dont driive and am disableed and this is how I watch trains thank you Dave
I have three videos on this railroad, and there are other videos of S2s from other regions of the country that are easily available on youtube. I myself do not know of any specific sources, but I would think a quick youtube search would find them.
how many cars can this engen pull
I believe it can pull at most 13 at once.
thank you
scott Toro generally your number of cars will vary if they are loaded or empty. Ex: 13 car train loaded may be a stretch for Alco's, but 13 empty is nothing to it. Also depends on grade, and how heavy the actual cars are.
thank you
Where did you record this video? Near 3rd ST? I ride bike through there and see a swithcer locomotive looks like it in video last month.
Yes, 3rd street runs parallel to the road that the first scene was filmed on.
GREAT Video! Is that Alco S2 their only LOCO.Or do they have a backup engine?! Also, love the SAFETY STRIPE PAINT SCHEME! IT LOOKS LIKE EARLY SOUTHERN PACIFIC.WITH IT HAVING YELLOW RATHER THAN ORANGE TRIM.WHAT YEAR WAS THE S2 BUILT?! Not many RAILROAD RAILROADS have them in service any longer.Good to see this antique Alco still earning its KEEP!
Thank you Tom! They currently have 2 S2's (#23 and #25). #23 was built in 1944, #25 about the same time.
cool
+Christopher Taylor Thanks!
