  • Happy 4th of July everyone! After almost a year of planning and restoration work, the day has finally come! For years, the San Francisco Bay Railroad has owned two Alco S2 locos (SFBR 23 and 25), with only the 23 being operable. SFBR 25 had been in a state of disrepair for most of the SFBR's recent operating history, making #23 the only working loco they had on the property. But with the arrival of summer this year came the news that #25 was finally ready to move! This is the first day that the SFBR crew spent putting a now-operating #25 through its paces. Seen here, SFBR 23 and 25 team up to tackle the day's workload under the supervision of the skilled engineers who tend to them. Enjoy!

    SFBR Alco S2 number 23 was in the 1974 movie ' Freebie and the Bean " .

    These switchers bring back lots of 1950s memories of watching TNO trains in Houston on the line across Montrose Blvd to the downtown Polk Ave yards. Number 30 twice daily and numbers 50 to 54 in the mornings. Loved the sound, the smoke and the mars light on those S2 beauties.

    I'm an Alco fan and your videos are top notch! I was born to late to see most of them in their prime, thanks for documenting these hard working pups!

    Fantastic ! - 2 beautiful S2's running clean and well maintained, doing the job they were built for after 70 years. Where is this Magic place ? - Lower 3rd. street, Bayshore, Hunters Point ? Maybe even South S.F. - I have to know. AND THANKS !

    That was awesome. I'm loving the WABCo single chime horn on the 25. The two sound great together so much turbo goodness! Seems like the guys at the SFBR are quite friendly, a quality that sadly lacks in many railroads in this day and age. Great post!

      Thanks! The SFBR crew are one of the friendliest groups of railroaders I know. I told one of the engineers at the end of the day that the two alco turbos spooling down simultaneously sounds kinda like that of a jumbo jet landing.

    It's nice to see two old Alco switchers still painted in the Southern Pacific orange and black zebra stripes

      Yes, Alcos in this day and age are always nice. Orange? These units are black and yellow, not orange.

    Great action! This makes me want to travel out to California before this sight goes away!

      Thank you! You might want to hurry, as the alcos already have a potential replacement coming in the future.

      #25 no longer has a engine it’s now on static display. #23 is still on back up.

    Sad to see #25 finally running only to have her prime mover removed and then put on static display. At least #23 will be kept intact and running, thank gosh!

      Yeah it is kind of a bummer, but this is why we record things like this. Someday, the mighty GEVO will be a museum piece, and young foamers of the day will ask us to tell stories about their days in operation. Time soldiers on.

    Have these S2's been repowered?

    • @Alwaystrains
      @Alwaystrains  7 років тому +1

      Nope! These units still carry their original Alco 539T prime movers.

      They have been reworked to run on biodiesel, but no re-powering.
