An another issue with ios18 has been that once Car Play is connected the audio defaults to voice assistant or voice commands. This means the music playing from the car through Apple CarPlay is not good and sounds bad. I had this for a while now and after multiple trouble shooting finally cracked it. Turn OFF the new Voice Commands on your phone Settings - Accessibility - Vocal Shortcuts
Thanks for sharing, yes there’s been a couple of threads online about this (annoyingly after I filmed the video 😅) I’ll pin your comment to the top ☺️ thank you! 🙏
Also I must appreciate your videos. Very informative and extremely articulate. I have a CLS53 AMG 2022 and got a lot of information from your videos. Bought it second hand and love it. Want to get it wrapped Matte Black but unsure
I'm regretting updating to iOS18. Now, when I receive a call while listening to music via wireless apple CarPlay, once the call finishes, the music starts up again but continually chops in and out at one-second intervals. Nothing I do can fix it, unless I reboot the phone or turn the car off. Was operating perfectly on all previous iOS versions. Definitely and iOS18 issue.
I’ve had a frustrating CarPlay issues since updating to iOS 18. Using a new iPhone 16 pro max. Basically, when it’s plugged in, the rear speakers don’t work. Bluetooth is fine. My son’s phone on iOS 17 is fine too. I’ve tried the following and on two trips and the rear speakers worked again then back to not working thereafter. Turned phone on / off. Reset car media player. Turned off sound check on iPhone. Tried a different cable. Reset audio preferences in car. Turned on a song then plugged phone in. Still not fix. Further to this, on a couple of occasions I’ve plugged the phone in, pressed play on the car media screen and the music played from my phone speakers only. Again, I’d had zero issues until iOS 18.
Have you got any automations / vocal shortcuts set up? There’s a thread online with people experiencing the same issue where Siri is constantly listening for a command and causing the audio issues: www.reddit.com/r/CarPlay/comments/1fkp51m/ios_18_issues_with_carplay/
@@DaniielNaviia it’s so frustrating, especially when I’ve never had issues before and really do prefer CarPlay to using Bluetooth. I don’t even know if it’s happening enough to people that apple will take notice and make efforts to rectify the problem.
I updated to iOS 18 yesterday and started experiencing sound quality issues with CarPlay today. I always drive while listening to a book from Kindle for iPhone, using the “speak screen” feature. After the update, the reading has become choppy, with words getting cut off, making it impossible to listen to the book.
VPN can slow down connections to the CarPlay apps. If you pause or cancel VPN the apps will work. The problem is that they may get frozen, In which case you should disconnect the phone from CarPlay by turning off wifi/blutooth and then reconnecting it.
Bruh thank you so much I love you I was going to buy a new iPhone but I just tried this and it worked cause android auto was working on my cousin phone but not CarPlay in my phone just turned of my vpn and it worked thanks 🙏🏼
I've also had issues with my iPhone 14, both wireless and wired. I did a hard reset, and still it didn't fix the issue. I was about to ignore and rediscover when I did the simplest thing ever. I turned carplay off on my phone and turned it back on. This solved my issues. There's an on-and-off switch for carplay in carplay settings.
it was good with my after market system until 17.6.1 second version. i thought 17.7 would have fixes, but didn't check before installing 18. so i'm still down.
The only thing that worked for me was to turn the engine off for about 30 minutes then pressing/ holding unto the power button for 10 sec to turn the car back on. Thanks
One extra thing that might help if using wireless apple CarPlay, position in the car! For example, if my phone is in my pocket sometimes it can have connectivity issues / unreliable connection, move it to the centre console / somewhere generally unobstructed and the issues disappear. Great video as always, thanks 🙏
Very true! One would hope that it should work a little further than that even if the phone was in a bag in the back, but that does make sense! Thank you! 🙏
I have used all of your tricks over time and they have all enabled car play to become functional. I think the biggest issue is with non compatible cables as you pointed out.
2022 Chevy Tahoe. New iPhone 16 and incoming texts will not show up at the bottom of the screen thus giving me an option of listening or replying. They come in and system automatically starts reading the text without identifying the sender and of course, no option to reply while driving.
Thanks again Nick. My wife is having an issue on her new ID3, so will try your tips /fixes. My phone seems to work with her car, so I guess it's all a bit hit and miss with IOS18 at the moment.
After upgrading to IOS18, the TTS apps (naturalreader, speechcentral) works in bluetooth mode but not in carplay mode. The sound becomes Intermittent. Same issue with MDX 2022 and X5 2022.
Hi Nick, I have a quick question about my 21-plate GLB 220d, if that's alright. Do you know if it's possible to have the left screen display in full-screen mode, similar to the newer models? thanks
Sadly not all cars can do full screen CarPlay. There are other manufacturers who have come across the same before. For Mercedes it’s a common question which I’ve answered on my FAQ series here: ua-cam.com/video/N9x56XWdjIo/v-deo.htmlsi=mlzuNGtciSlsdcdb&t=537 Basically it’s because MBUX (also known as NTG 6) on Mercedes is available in two screen sizes, 7” & 10.25”. When designing & coding I’m led to believe that you can only choose one (to maintain compatibility) for everything. So to make sure it works on all models, Mercedes of course had to go with the 7” version, which is perfect for 7” owners but of course leads to a cropped experience if you have a 10.25” screen. NTG 7 found in some new cars have higher faster processors and have one screen size leading to a full screen experience on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Hope that explains potentially why it’s like that on some cars!
@@npoleary YOU ARE AMAZING!! That was it for me! I did every troubleshooting on Reddit and UA-cam and this was all that it was. It makes sense now though haha.
@@npolearyNick please help. Reading all the comments I see turning off Face ID for texting is a remedy. I think this is my problem. However, I can’t figure out how to shut off the Face ID for texting.
I’ve got an after market head unit. Siri stopped responding when connected to CarPlay a while ago. Tried everything you’ve mentioned except reset to factory settings. What worked was resetting Location and privacy on the iPhone.
Thanks for video After buying IPhone 16 Apple play stopped but I found after 4 days it needed the cars WiFi data. I do not subscribe to any WiFi or data plan But the 2023 Cadillac came with it for a limited time and for wireless car play to work it had to be in the WiFi settings.
Hi Nick. Can you help please. I have a cla with mbux I've just added wireless CarPlay iOS 18 via a CarPlay dongle, from an iPhone 14 Plus but I can only get 4 icons wide on the Home Screen, you have 5 icons wide 😩 Thank you in advance.

I just bought a new Ford Mach E. CarPlay seems to be very finniky with the Sync 4 system. The main issue happening in this car is I can see my music playing, the progress bar is moving, but no sound is coming out. It’s frustrating and I hope it’s addressed soon by either Apple or Ford. Good video!
I tried everything he said till turned the vpn off. It worked after I turned VPN off. But my company requires vpn. Idk what to do. It usually turns back on by itself 😢
Unrelated, but when the steering wheel on my GLE 400e is in my preferred position, I cannot see the blinkers. The indicator sound is so minimal that its barley audible, which presents problems in its self. Can the indicator volume be increased? MB dont think so.......... Thoughts?
@@npoleary Thanks for this, but MB should take notice? Just discovered yesterday that the charging portal doesn’t accept super fast charging, which the earlier model did. My dealer also wasn’t aware.
Don’t think there’s a specific requirement for indicators to be certain volume. I think (I’m not 100% sure on this) but an MOT test requires it to flash and make a sound, don’t think there’s a measurement on the volume.
Great job on the vid. Clear. Concise. Nicely toned. I have not read all the comments but, don't forget your vehicle may need a recent nav system and software update. I think that's my case... should know soon
I started having problem with my IPhone Pro Max when I updated to IOS 18.1.1. I managed to fix this by TURNING OFF my Express VPN. I could reconnect to my VPN once the car play loaded on the display screen.Hope this helps someone.
To check a few things What make and model do you have? 🤓 Are you 100% sure you have Apple CarPlay on the car? Are you using the correct cable? Is the phone case preventing you from plugging it in fully? Plugging it into the correct USB port? (These all sound silly but you’ll be surprised some times it’s only a small thing) Can you launch it manually on the correct screen in the car? Let me know 🤓
I just created a vocal shortcut, that works as expected on iPhone. Problem is, when connected to CarPlay, as the iPhone is always listening, it reacts to the audio in the car and always goes into listening mode. No way to stop that 🤷♂️
The only problem I have is that I don’t see anymore notifications popup on the screen. I have the sound but then I need to go in CarPlay to see what kind of notification it is
Im losing my mind as I cant seem to make carplay work after I updated to ios 18.1 beta bar two ocassions. I changed cables to no avail. Im so heavily reliant on google maps in my carplay as I drive 60 miles per day to and fro work. I am trying resetting wireless settings and Im keeping my fingers crossed. I tried all the other suggestions before and I am ever so frustrated. At some point I though of changing my car! Ugh 😢
Hi mate , my messages are coming through fine but the option to reply seems to have disappeared so I’ve got to send a message from scratch if that makes sense? Any ideas ?
Hmmm that is strange, only things I can suggest are what’s in the video, un-pair / re-pair back up and the other things. Try another car if you can with your phone, to see if if the problem persists
Hi Nick, I recently had a notification on my MBUX that the Ridevu App has been installed. I don't have the App on the MBUX, but when I click on the link which came with the notification, a website error appears. I've my video streaming on the Merceded Me App activated. Are you able to do a video on Ridevu in Mercedes?
Really sorry never heard of that before? Where are you based? I know apps and features vary round the world so possibly might only be available where you live.
Oh nice! 👌🏼 Not heard of an EQB 260 before but you’ll have to ask someone who works at Mercedes, they’ll be able to let you know if it’s compatible etc I assume it would work but I know and have heard from comments on my channel it varies round the world.
Greetings from Indonesia Nick! IOS 17 was effortlessly connected to my Mazda CX5, but since changing to iOS 18, I've had to repeatedly forget/delete the connected device and pair it again, and the worst happened with 18.1, when I couldn't connect wirelessly at all.
@@npoleary Update: I hard reset my iPhone 14 PM (volume up, down, release, then hold the power button), paired it again with my Mazda, and it works now! I'm hoping that this will be a long term solution to the airplay connectivity issue.
Same. Mazda MX5. 18 worked if I forgot the connection everytime and now (18.1) only works via cable. Wireless says connecting, but in the end, nothing.
I have problems after the update to iOS 18. Basically it has a delay when I’m using navigations apps, like Waze. The image freezes for seconds and it continues after that … with iOS 17 everything was ok. I’m using CarPlay via wireless.
Hmmm strange…this might sound silly but try these in order: - Test it via the wired method, see if changes - Restart phone - Un-pair phone from car - Un-pair car from phone - Re-pair back up There is also the possibility of resetting network settings, make sure you’re not using a VPN. After that we may have to wait till the next iOS update. Just curious which car, make, model and year do you have?
You will always have that issue if you’re trying to use two systems. Apple CarPlay is designed to replace the in-built multimedia in a car. So if you’re going to listen to the Radio, ideally you’d download the TuneIn radio app and use that on CarPlay. Some manufacturers offer a tighter integration where you can use both but that’s still not how it’s designed to work. For example if you’re using the radio in the car, and you receive a text message, CarPlay will instantly take over the whole screen. For the best experience in an ideal world use one or the other.
@ recently acquired a 2022 Toyota Highlander, with an iPhone 16 with iOS 18 and didn’t work, I tried with my old iPhone 13 (of course other cable) and it worked perfectly fine. I keep reading that most people with iOS 18 can’t use car play
It’s been absolutely fine for me even since the beta on multiple cars I’ve reviewed. Have you tried un-pairing and re-pairing back up and forgetting CarPlay in settings on the phone?
@ FIXED IT! (Sort of) finally got home and had the same issue with an android phone that wouldn’t recognize the cable (manual android car), pulled an old cable and now both android and iPhone work. Guess I was using a knock off cable this whole time… conclusion for anybody reading this: make sure you get the right cable🤦♂️
Haha that’s why I put it at No 1 in the video 😛 I blame the cable makers, USB-C is really good that it’s just one connector but there are different speeds and outputs and some only provide power…but annoyingly the only way of knowing is just by trying other cables or using official ones 🤦♂️
Previously when a text message comes in, siri will ask if I want to reply but after ios18 I noticed it doesn’t ask this anymore. How do I get it back? Thanks
Hey Nick! Random question for cla 2021 petrol. Should I disable the auto start-stop when I start the car? I've heard that can cause damage in the long run but idk if that's true.
Anyone who says that is just spreading false information. Car manufacturers would not put something in the car like that which would cause it to wear out faster, that would be very unethical! Basically any car since 2013 (ish) has a starter motor or starter generator that is rated for way more start / stop cycles to cope with the extra cycles that it’ll do. Same for the battery too. Hope that answers your question! I should also add there are times where you will want the engine to stay on, or you just don’t like it so you can turn it off per driving session 🤓
@@npoleary thank you very much man I appreciate the answer! So even if I'm driving in the city and the start-stop function is used often it shouldn't be a problem for the car!🙏
No not at all, it’s there to save fuel and reduce emissions. However I will add that early versions of cars that have this tech are a little slower at starting, where it takes a second or so to start). This can be an issue when pulling away say like a road crossing or roundabout etc. So people will often comment and say they don’t like it. I do agree with them for early versions like 2013 ish around that sort of time. But for newer cars they start almost instantly, quicker than your foot going from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal. But if you don’t like it, it can be toggled off (per driving session) Newer cars actually turn the engine off as you slow down to save fuel even further and they’re even quicker at starting!
My fix for a constant not connecting via wireless . Was to forget and delete device . Then in Settings / General / About : Changed the name of device to a different name. This cleared up my not connecting via wireless issue. It’s as if it would never connect to the original device name I had before updating to iOS 18. Also the Network Reset did not work. Unfortunately in doing a network reset you lose all your WiFi saves.
Ah awesome thanks for sharing! Hmmm the device name change is interesting. Not thought of that one. I have a similar issue at home with Phillips Hue and Google Home, and I bet that’s a similar issue!
Hi Nick, I thought your iOS 18 update tutorial was particularly helpful. I tried the Ping feature and that worked identifying my iPad. But how do I get my wife's iPhone 16 (iOS18.01) to ping to her car keys (Peugeot 508, 2023)? Regards, Derek
Hey Derek, thank you for the super thanks on your other message 🙏 I haven’t tried it with Apple items, on the find my network you can ping devices but not sure on AirTags specifically
Pandora doesn’t have an accurate station list for me. The initial list populates fine, but when I attempt to change the station, the name is wrong for the station as the station listing is frozen with the initial order.
Sadly never heard of that app in the UK and a quick search shows that the app isn’t available here (probably why I hadn’t heard of it) Only thing I can suggest is to make sure you’ve got the latest app version installed. Sadly I can’t even click on it to check as it says it not available here in the UK.
Have also been having a lot of trouble with pandora. Either it won’t load at all or it loads my collection but then I can’t click on anything or control the music
That sounds like an app issue and from the looks of it, loads of people have an issue with Pandora itself: community.pandora.com/t5/Automotive/CarPlay-Unable-to-load-stations-in-Recent-tab-after-updating-to/m-p/166223 You might have to wait for them to fix it! 😬 Hopefully won’t be long!
The major issue i have is not being able to say Hey Mercedes and ask her to call someone when the apple car play is on… in my old car 2019 CLA even though i had apple car play on she would still use the phone to call as well. Is there something I am missing or not actioned ?? Also I have had the car play just cut out on both calls and navigation over the last couple of days randomly
That’s sadly not how multimedia systems work as they’re separate systems. Ideally you’re meant to use one or the other. So either your phone through CarPlay or the in-built multimedia system. Some car manufacturers that I’ve reviewed will offer a more seamless integration but they will always be separate so for the best experience you should choose one and stick with it. An example is, if you’re using the in-built sat nav but you receive a group text on CarPlay, CarPlay will steal the focus away from what you’re doing. And then it’s 3 clicks or so to get back to the sat nav, per message you receive. They will always be separate, so there’s no getting round that, some manufactures are tighter integrated than others.
@@npoleary yeah totally understand that they are different, however how it was managed in in the 2019 car against my new 24 version makes things less integrated than previously. It’s also a shame that the integration of Apple car play didn’t extend to the “hey Siri” voice commands without having to hold a button down
It’s probably more a car manufacturer separating that line further. Car manufacturers annoyingly want you to use their multimedia system whereas Apple of course want you to use their version. It would be good if they could all work together!
Crossfade seems to have been messed up since iOS 18 was released , worked fine before, tracks abruptly end instead of fading out, anyone else got this problem. And I believe Apple worked on Crossfade to make it smoother transition, yeah right.
Since you suggested these: I’d definitely try someone else’s phone on my CarPlay before resetting my phone. I’d definitely try my phone on someone else’s CarPlay before resetting my car as well.

I looked in my manual - no info on how to reset ie reboot my entertainment software with hot keys or otherwise. 2024 Ford Maverick - anybody know the reset keys to use?
I believe the Ford Maverick has the multimedia system called Sync 3 looking online. *Soft Reset* Press and hold the Seek up and the audio unit Power buttons simultaneously until the screen goes black. Wait for the system reset to complete. Press the audio unit Power button to switch the system on. *Factory Reset* Tap Settings. Choose General. Scroll down and press Master Reset. A message confirming that all system settings will be erased and reset to factory defaults will appear. Press Continue. A "Resetting to factory defaults" message will appear, the system will turn off, and the screen will go blank. It may take a few minutes for the system to reset and resume normal operation.
I picked up a 2024 GLE53 and had other 2024 models as loaner vehicles before with NTG7 and I’ve noticed on all the vehicles - the Apple CarPlay would freeze for 1-2 seconds. The music would stop and then continue 2 seconds later and same with my navigation. I even had the CarPlay disconnect randomly. I would then get an error message when trying to boot up CarPlay. Do you think it’s my iPhone? It’s happened on every single car. I have a iPhone 14 Pro and IOS 18. This never happened before on my 2022 Toyota Prius & 2017 C63 AMG. Please help!
Is that when it’s connected wirelessly? If so I’ve noticed that a few months after owning my car so I just connect via the cable 🤓 Charges the phone plus it’s a bit more responsive when it’s plugged in anyway.
Oh that is strange if it happens when plugged in. Might be worth reaching out to a dealer and see what they say, they might be able to run some diagnostics or something
@@npoleary Yeah, that will be the next move. Unfortunately my dealer needs the vehicle for a whole day and will charge a diag without loaner vehicle for $300. And I know they won’t be able to verify my issue once the vehicle is there. 😅 but thank you for your advice!! Keep up the amazing videos!
Another issue that can affect CarPlay depending on car make /model and hearing aids make/ model. As you may be or not be aware most modern car systems communicate to each other Bluetooth via V2V technology and on occasions if there’s to much Bluetooth communication going on within the car and the added hearing aid Bluetooth signal it can and has caused wireless CarPlay to either go blank momentarily or not connect at all as aforementioned depending on on what car safety systems and other car systems are gaining access to the Bluetooth network in the car as well as the hearing aid Bluetooth signal and demand
FYI the old style USB connector is actually USB-A, not just USB! So the adaptor that you are using is USB-C to USB-A, I feel better now having gotten that off my chest! Excellent clear and helpful video as ever, keep them coming.
Haha thanks! Was trying to keep it on a non technical explanation but I guess it wouldn’t have hurt to say USB A 😅 I even remember USB-B (I think that was on my old printer?) 😂 Thank you! 🙏
Ah just the cable? You know it’s one of the most annoying things out there! There are cheap cables but they only provide power and then it causes issues like CarPlay not working!
This is quite rare but it sounds like it could be the car: www.reddit.com/r/CarPlay/s/CkWCMX1tAu At least two other people with a Chevy who have similar issues just on this post. Very rare for it to be the car though, normally it’s just the phone and if CarPlay works on one it should work on the other. As there are a few others I’d advise to reach out to Chevy and see if they have heard of others who might be experiencing the same issues. They might know a fix!

Hi Nick, and thanks for the well researched and thorough video. I do like your overlapping video transitions where the audio precedes the visual cut, as well as the slight zoom effect you use, and the whoosh swipes I have been hearing. I enjoyed the video, and I do not even have Apple. LOL 😄😄😄
Ah not many people will notice that! I’m impressed! It’s tricky actually, when I first started making videos I actually had the music too loud but now I fade it in and out of tutorial videos, not so much the reviews. And even the SFX of the iOS 18 logo smashing as the start of the video, both sfx cut, faded in before the clip shows, impact on the glass smash and then fade out after the clip and it even has a low pass filter on too! 😜 It takes time, I’m always trying to learn new things and make the videos better! I’m thinking of doing some Android Auto videos somewhen! Might be a while yet though, maybe a video for January or something! 😅
I was driving yesterday and the problem I had was after receiving a whatsapp message it would not allow a reply! Neither voice or pressing the reply box!!
The problem I’ve had with wireless CarPlay is that it stops all mobile downloads whilst connected to the car, the only remedy has been to turn off WiFi and revert to a wired connection
My issue is that CarPlay doesn't seem to like working in the evening. In the morning and all through daytime, it comes right up with the wired setup. But as soon as it gets dark, nothing. I first found this issue on a rental car, then on my personal car. It's almost as though there is some limitation on the phone blocking the app in the evening. Anyone else have this issue?
@@npoleary I usually use Waze for navigation. It comes up on the iPhone as usual but the car shows absolutely nothing re CarPlay as if I've never used it before. It took several days with a rental car to figure out that it works perfectly during daylight/daytime and then nothing later when it's dark or getting dark. I've searched like a maniac for info on this. One individual stated something related to having headlights on auto but I didn't see any difference in my experience when turning that function off. Just so I am explaining clearly, nothing from CarPlay shows up in the evening (not music, navigation apps, etc.) the CarPlay screen doesn't even open up on the display.
If you go onto settings on your phone, then head to Screen Time. Have you got anything enabled in this menu that will change stuff from daytime to nighttime?
Maybe someone can help me. My CarPlay connects wirelessly to the car absolutely fine. The problem is, lately it has been blocking cellular data to work while connected to the car through wifi. So the phone connects, CarPlay comes on but all the CarPlay apps are offline, even though my data is switched on. Any idea how to fix this?
Ah you can’t use both at the same time 😅 Apple CarPlay wireless uses Bluetooth and WiFi together so if you try and use personal hotspot it’ll cancel the other one out. To get around this you’ll have to use CarPlay wired, then you can use Personal Hotspot as well for the car 🤓
@@npoleary thanks for the reply. My Apple CarPlay worked fine for 3yrs, with both wifi and data switched on at all times. But there’s great news! Just a moment ago I scoured through Reddit and finally found a fix for my particular issue. You go into iPhone settings/wifi. In the top right corner tap ‘edit’. Find Audi_MMI_1234 (whatever it may be) and tap forget network. I did this away from the car (in my home). I then entered my Audi like I usually do (with wifi & Bluetooth permanently enabled). But this time the car automatically connected to CarPlay, on its own. Hopefully this helps anyone with my particular problem. So remove Audi from your wifi list, but still keep wifi turned on your phone 👍🏼
Hmmm interesting, every time I tried it over the years, I can’t connect to wireless CarPlay and provide internet to a car at the same time. I’m guessing it must be different for various manufacturers or something. Good to know though!
The problem is with IOS18. They have a fix coming this week 18.01 hopefully this will fix the Bluetooth issues. It's not only with carplay it's with the buds and pro max also.
I have an issue after updating to IOS 18.. with the message notifications. Before getting IOS18, everytime I got a new message ( WhatsApp, etc) it will pop up in the Mbux screen, no matter what screen i was actually on ( the radio screen, or in the navigation screen, etc) But now it only pops up if i am on the CarPlay screen.. I have been checking all the settings, and i have all the notifications enabled, CarPlay enabled, siri enabled.. Is it normal? Does anyone have the same problem?
I’ve never seen a 3rd party app like What’s App send notifications to the car screen especially when using CarPlay. For the Messages app, yes it can do this but only when over Bluetooth. When you use Apple CarPlay it takes over some elements of a multimedia system so for the best experience, it’s best to use one or the other. You can mix and match on some cars out there but CarPlay can just randomly pop up out of nowhere if someone messages you for example.
Apple car play is not working on my iPhone 15 pro iOS 18.01 but I know for a fact it’s not the cable or car cause android auto works on my mothers phone

An another issue with ios18 has been that once Car Play is connected the audio defaults to voice assistant or voice commands. This means the music playing from the car through Apple CarPlay is not good and sounds bad. I had this for a while now and after multiple trouble shooting finally cracked it.

@@npoleary yes. The issue was very annoying and took me a while to figure it out

Matte Black would look good! 👍🏼
Just did it thanks a lot works fine now
I'm regretting updating to iOS18.
Thanks!
Thank you so much @derekC10001 🤓🤓

I have exactly this problem too!! It’s curious because my wife’s iPhone works without any problem… and both phones have iOS 18.0.1

Thanks a lot. I spend more than 30 minutes trying to connect my iPhone to my car and the issue was the VPN !!

Amazing! Glad you got it going! 🤓
try turning off voice control. Worked for me. IOS 18 wasn't working with car play until I did that
i tried that, i am still having problems. sigh 😔
I've also had issues with my iPhone 14, both wireless and wired. I did a hard reset, and still it didn't fix the issue. I was about to ignore and rediscover when I did the simplest thing ever. All was good and now it won’t connect with Bluetooth- even connected and have never had a problem with my Apple cord.
@kimtodd2744 tried re-connecting and network settings etc? Also are you using a VPN as that can affect it apparently
The only thing that worked for me was to turn the engine off for about 30 minutes then pressing/ holding unto the power button for 10 sec to turn the car back on. Thanks
Great video. Tried every cable I own, deleted and added all of it. Turned off VPN and it's working fine. Thanks
Glad you got it going! 🤓
This help me: I removed phone from car bluetooth and car from iphone. Then tried to connect through usb and boom it’s working like before
One extra thing that might help if using wireless apple CarPlay, position in the car!

Thanks you. VPN was the answer disabled it and it connected right away.
Ah perfect! Glad you got it going again!

I have used all of your tricks over time and they have all enabled car play to become functional. I think the biggest issue is with non compatible cables as you pointed out.

Why USB cables aren’t all the same and can’t just do data and power is beyond me.

For Mercedes it’s a common question which I’ve answered on my FAQ series here: ua-cam.com/video/N9x56XWdjIo/v-deo.htmlsi=mlzuNGtciSlsdcdb&t=537
Basically it’s because MBUX (also known as NTG 6) on Mercedes is available in two screen sizes, 7” & 10.25”.
All works on my CarPlay excluding text messages. What do you suggest?
Most likely cause is that you have FaceID enabled for text messages. Toggle it off and it’ll appear in CarPlay again 🤓

IOS 17 was effortlessly connected to my Mazda CX5, but since changing to iOS 18, I've had to repeatedly forget/delete the connected device and pair it again, and the worst happened with 18.1, when I couldn't connect wirelessly at all.
Oh that is strange…I’ve not heard of anyone having issues since updating…have you tried a networking setting reset? You’re not using a VPN are you?

Have you updated Waze as well? App updates often update a week or two afterward but you can manually force it to update straight away.
@@npoleary, yes, I did the updates, but it’s still the same… :/
Hmmm strange…this might sound silly but try these in order:
- Test it via the wired method, see if changes
- Restart phone
- Un-pair phone from car
- Un-pair car from phone
- Re-pair back up
There is also the possibility of resetting network settings, make sure you’re not using a VPN.
After that we may have to wait till the next iOS update.
Just curious which car, make, model and year do you have?
@@npoleary I have the same issue as well... 16 pro max with ios 18.1, on a 2024 toyota corolla.
My problem is that the iPhone goes to Apple Music automatically when I am in carplay. It shuts off my radio. Any suggestions. Thanks
Thanks
Just got 18.1.1, Car play not working. But it does on my older version iPhone 11
What car are you connecting to (make, model and year)
And is it wired or wireless?
Haha that’s why I put it at No 1 in the video 😛
I blame the cable makers, USB-C is really good that it’s just one connector but there are different speeds and outputs and some only provide power…but annoyingly the only way of knowing is just by trying other cables or using official ones 🤦♂️
Very good video!
Thank you! 🙏
Previously when a text message comes in, siri will ask if I want to reply but after ios18 I noticed it doesn’t ask this anymore. How do I get it back? Thanks
On CarPlay, you just tap on the message and then it asks from there, is that not working for you? I did it yesterday
But if you don’t like it, it can be toggled off (per driving session)
Newer cars actually turn the engine off as you slow down to save fuel even further and they’re even quicker at starting!
@@npoleary thanks Nick for the detailed answer!
No worries! 🤓

Very true! 🤓
Thanks for sharing!
FYI the old style USB connector is actually USB-A, not just USB! So the adaptor that you are using is USB-C to USB-A, I feel better now having gotten that off my chest! Excellent clear and helpful video as ever, keep them coming.
Haha thanks! Was trying to keep it on a non technical explanation but I guess it wouldn’t have hurt to say USB A 😅
I even remember USB-B (I think that was on my old printer?) 😂
Thank you! 🙏
@@npoleary that's right, I don't remember ever seeing a USB-B connector on anything other than a printer! 😁
Tried with iOS 18.01 but no happiness. Waiting for 18.02😢
What happens with CarPlay with your car?
Can you see it on the screen? Have you tried using the official cable? 🤓
Carplay just wouldn't start on my 2024 CX-8 wirelessly, I'd have to connect it with a cable to initialize it. This never happened on iOS 17.
Hmmm strange, well Apple are rumoured to release an update soon so hopefully some fixes will be on there if none of the steps worked in the video!
Mine work just by changing the cable, was really getting piimp about it
Ah just the cable? You know it’s one of the most annoying things out there! There are cheap cables but they only provide power and then it causes issues like CarPlay not working!
Mines still not working with ios 18.1 in my chevy 2500🤯
Is it wired or wireless?
@ it’s wireless Bluetooth, but it’ll only work when I plug it in via the USB port
@ it was working fine until I updated to the 18.1
This is quite rare but it sounds like it could be the car: www.reddit.com/r/CarPlay/s/CkWCMX1tAu
At least two other people with a Chevy who have similar issues just on this post. Very rare for it to be the car though, normally it’s just the phone and if CarPlay works on one it should work on the other.
As there are a few others I’d advise to reach out to Chevy and see if they have heard of others who might be experiencing the same issues. They might know a fix!
ios 18.1 here. Carplay is definitely kaputt on mazda 6. With Ios 18.0.1 i did the wifi ip address off (known hack), but now it just doesnt help. Whatever you do, carplay not functioning.
Too bad this video could not help me. With my iPhone 15 eveyrthing worked fine, bought a new iPhone 16 Pro Max with iOs 18 and have the following problems. Whatsapp is not on my Carplay anymore, also when I go to notifications in whatsapp it doesn't shows the Carplay option anymore. please someone help me out
Have you locked it with FaceID? That sounds like it might be!
It takes time, I’m always trying to learn new things and make the videos better!
I’m thinking of doing some Android Auto videos somewhen! Might be a while yet though, maybe a video for January or something! 😅
@@npoleary Yep, 99 out of 100 have no idea of the time it takes. Appreciated. I look fwd to the Android Auto vids, but no hurry. Thanks again.
My iMessages are no longer available through car play
Most probably cause is that you’ve locked iMessages with FaceID
Toggle it off in settings so that it opens normally and it should reappear 👍🏼
I was driving yesterday and the problem I had was after receiving a whatsapp message it would not allow a reply! Neither voice or pressing the reply box!!
What’s app had an app update yesterday, have you updated to that? 🤓
The problem I’ve had with wireless CarPlay is that it stops all mobile downloads whilst connected to the car, the only remedy has been to turn off WiFi and revert to a wired connection
Oh interesting what like app updates or something? Or are you downloading music or video from another app?
VPN definitely interferes. Won’t launch at all
My issue is that CarPlay doesn't seem to like working in the evening. In the morning and all through daytime, it comes right up with the wired setup. But as soon as it gets dark, nothing. I first found this issue on a rental car, then on my personal car. It's almost as though there is some limitation on the phone blocking the app in the evening. Anyone else have this issue?
I’ve never experienced a time related issue before like that.
What shows on the phone and car screen when you try and connect it?
Ah you can’t use both at the same time 😅
Apple CarPlay wireless uses Bluetooth and WiFi together so if you try and use personal hotspot it’ll cancel the other one out.
Hopefully they fix the camera issue too on the Pro models 😅
Hi is it fixed with 18.01?
Camera issue is fixed! Finally! 😅
@@yangshuhan2935 no
YES! It’s not just my CarPlay. It’s everything 😩
Mine keeps disconnecting wirelessly driving me nuts
Tried un-pairing and re-pairing back up?
Which make / model of car do you have?

WhatsApp appears to have disappeared for me from Apple Car play
Have you got it locked via FaceID? If you have it won’t show 🙏
Apple car play is not working on my iPhone 15 pro iOS 18.01 but I know for a fact it’s not the cable or car cause android auto works on my mothers phone
Are you using any VPN’s or anything on your phone? Make sure they’re off as that can interfere with it
@@npoleary yeah I was scrolling reading comments and that worked I was like bruh I drove a lot today and had to kept looking down on my phone for gps which is not good but turned vpn of after got home and it worked but don’t understand way it doesn’t work it used to work with vpn before on iOS 17 I believe
Yeah hopefully they’ll fix it again
I don’t use a VPN so have never experienced it but have read about it a lot!
@@npoleary yeah but really don’t find a need to use a vpn while driving now that I think of it connected to my own cell service not public wifi or that

🇺🇸 i have a 2021 jeep gladiator mojave. Sound ( music) dont soud the same.!!!! After ios18 as we speak
Have you got Vocal Shortcuts enabled in accessibility? This is causing Siri to continuously listen forcing music through the Siri output resulting in poor music quality.
@@npoleary. Works.!!!!!! Thanks.!!!!!!!🫡🫡🫡👊🏽👊🏽
100% was the VPN. Turn it off to get CarPlay to turn on via USB. If VPN is on only you can connect Bluetooth.
had this issue since I got my IPhone 16. Was 100% the VPN. Thanks 🙏
Brilliant! Glad you got it going!
My carplay starts lagging when on a call. Please tell any solution to it.
I’d try all of the steps in the video
Also have a look to see if you have any Vocal shortcuts enabled. Apparently they are causing a few issues for people on CarPlay at the moment until Apple release a fix
Thank feck I have android. I found Apple getting too big for their boots. Great vid though Nick.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Checking out Android Auto’s latest version is on my “to film” list so I’ll check that out somewhen. Might be a while yet though

What’s still not working on your CarPlay?
if your car worked with ios 17, then yeah, you have carplay.
IOS18 causing many issues
Apart from the phone and car resets I’ve tried all things
No WhatsApp
No phone icon
Sound quality is all over the place
Ugh!
Have you got any vocal shortcuts set up? There’s a thread I found: www.reddit.com/r/CarPlay/comments/1fkp51m/ios_18_issues_with_carplay/
I couldn’t see my WhatsApp and messages up originally but once I turned off “require Face ID” on each one, they appeared again on my carplay.
If your CarPlay is NOT wireless, but it’s plug and play, you need to use an official Apple Lightening cable. There is more data with the iOS 18.
CarPlay on iOS 18 and overall is doesn't offer much to have a video of 11 minutes about it. !!!
Last week’s video was on the features, this one’s on troubleshooting 🤓
All this troubleshooting won’t help. Wait until 18.3 release Apple is 💩
Well it depends what issue you were experiencing. Some issues were fixed on iOS 18.0.1 🙏
18.3 will be at least next year! 😅 we’ve got iOS 18.1 to come yet for the general release.
ios18 is a disaster
That’s extreme! 😂 why?
Heads up as well they’ve released iOS 18.0.1 last night 👊🏼 it might help with whatever problems you’re having!
@@npoleary as soon as I installed it, my phone has had several problems. Firstly, and commonly, Face ID wouldn’t work and phone wasn’t asking for my PIN. Despite the settings being correct.
