Yes definitely. A lot of those news organizations have never gotten over their egos about Tesla having no PR department. They felt insulted, like they weren't important enough to be paid attention to. Exactly what Elon intended them to think because it was true. Was this a good idea on Elon's part? Probably not, but normal people don't accomplish what he's accomplished and a lot of that is going to help save this world. That last sentence would be hyperbole when speaking about almost anybody else on this planet. What's weird with Elon is that it's absolutely true. He's an eccentric genius with lots of rough edges. I both respect his genius and love his trollishness.

I appreciate the conciseness of your summaries.
I won't read too much into Ford's Lightning production pause. That might have something to do with Ford's wrestling match with UAW; it's hard to guess. In any event, it's obvious Ford wants to make the truck. And they have orders.
More concerning is Ford's pause on construction of their battery plant with CATL. Ford will need those batteries. So what's up with that?
Wild-ass guess: Ford decided that something about that collaboration missed the sweet spot - type and specs of the planned batteries versus cost. Might be they want to renegotiate to take advantage of late-breaking tech. Or change the form-factor of cells. Or want tweaks to pack assembly. Whatever it is motivating the pause, it must be significant. Otherwise Ford would have plowed ahead. They do need those batteries.
I'm please to see Rivian showing progress on their ramp.
Semi still seems to be in its LRIP phase: Low Rate Initial Production. Honestly, I don't know why. They have had enough time to bring up a production line and work through problems. They've had enough time to establish supply chains. They have orders, and they can deliver at least 750 KW chargers to position as fleet operators demand. They aren't ready to support go-anywhere jobs. But many fleet operators have suitable routes that should be easy to set up. So what's the hold-up?
I see a pattern. Model Y: paused for minor refresh which seems to end 4680 packs. Q3 production slightly down overall. Sales for Models S and X not surging despite major price reductions. Sure, you can write off Q3 as retooling and improving, but which is the cart, and which is the horse?
I think Tesla hit a supply snag. Batteries, or chips, or both. Those are the items most likely to be affected by geopolitical friction with China. And of course the unexpectedly slow 4680 ramp.
Production growth for complex end items usually run into snags. It's the nature of the beast. Winners navigate the snags and resume growth. Tesla is not going to lose, not after all they've worked so hard to accomplish.
They might fall short of 1.8 million units this year. They might even struggle next year to grow past that volume. Geopolitically-driven supply chain breaks might persist. There's still a real war on. And a trade war. Globalization is faltering.
The long term looks bright. But I think, in the short term, Tesla stock buying opportunities may again present themselves.
To conclude: the Model Y pause and minor refresh may be Tesla taking advantage of downtime forced on them by blips in their supply chains.
    Thanks for your reporting, Rob.

    • @trent_carter
      @trent_carter 8 місяців тому

You forgot to mention the cyber truck that will certainly add growth next year, independent of any other variable. I also think the time of purchase rebate instead of having to wait to file your taxes does matter to people because it reduces the monthly payment

    • @Urgelt
      @Urgelt 8 місяців тому

@@trent_carter if my conjecture about supply chains for chips and/or batteries failing to keep pace with Tesla's projected ramp is true, then the Cybertruck ramp could be, in the short term, disappointing. I don't have much faith in the uberbull case of 375K units in 2024. Under 50K units could be closer to the mark.
Of course if they do a smashingly successful ramp, I will be immensely pleased.
But I think I see hints in the data that all is not well in ramp-land.

Brake by wire means there is no actual link between the driver using the pedal and the output on the calipers. the pedal has a sensor which transmits the information to an electrical motor which generates pressure in the pipes and thus move the calipers. so no pump. also the feedback for the driver is generated virtually and is not the actual pressure in the pipes.

Thanks Rob! The Semi is also a highly anticipated Tesla Vehicle that I look forward to seeing on our roads and highways. Everyone else struggling with this strike or emissions standards are going to have very few viable choices available to them. This change is not stopping and every day of delay and denials that they used in the past is time that they can never get back, which makes their present situation entirely their fault. Sad, but this transition will be the end of more brands than I think we suspected... including some pure EV start ups (Lucid).

    • @allengraham7407
      @allengraham7407 8 місяців тому

I’m not sold at all regarding emissions regulations and govt pushes for EV transition in terms of timelines. We have seen this many times in the past where laws go in effect “by this date…” then the goal line moves farther in the future or the regulation is eliminated completely. Semi will not be a major player for a LONG time. But its local delivery capabilities should make it relevant on some level.

      Timelines.
Do you understand the "double S curve" concept?
      .
      TWO components.
      Essentially, similar to Newtonian Physics.
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
Every Tesla (etc) sold is an ICE vehicle NOT sold.
      .
EVERY (compelling) EV is selling..... and will sell.
      .
It's ALL about production rate and Tesla is driving that hard.
      .
An ICE company with 2-3% margins on *high volume* requires *high volume* for the business model to work.
      .
Conversely, a disruptor with "lower" (but increasing!) volume and *high profit* has "wiggle room" and opportunity to expand.
      .
The disruptive company only needs to remove a few percent of the incumbent profit and those companies have nowhere to go.
      .
That'll be what Tesla has (already) done .
      .
      Prices are effectively at parity.
      ICE sales are falling.
      .
      ICE production?
Is it the strikes closing plants, or dealer inventory? (They don't want/ can't accept new stock.... They're overflowing)
      .
So now, for whatever reason, the ICE sales S curve is falling and there's reduced, or zero production.
      .
Meanwhile the EV curve is rising at a scarily opposite rate.
There are going to be major bankruptcies VERY soon.
      .
      "Laws and targets" won't matter.
The speed of collapse will be frightening (if you work for or are invested in those companies).
      .
As for the Semi being a MAJOR player or not.....
      .
It outperforms other E Trucks 2:1 in range and between 3&4:1 in charging.
      Price?
The moment a Tesla Semi operator cuts their shipping rates by .... Let's say 20% because their cost per mile has dropped 30%..... EVERY customer will want to use that company.
EVERY shipping company will NEED the Tesla.
      .
and we're back to "production rate".
The curves flip as fast as Tesla can build the Trucks.

I am also not a Tesla cult follower and make every attempt to be a realist. My comment had zero to do with ICE sales vs EV sales or the almost incalculable advantage Tesla has in the EV market vs competitors. My belief, as I said is that I think regulations will guide on some level the overall direction of vehicle sales in general, but the hard and fast dates the govt has set up for EV transition is basically meaningless. Outside of California those dates will continue to be kicked farther and farther into the future. Or completely overturned depending on administration. And the semi as I stated is a novelty model with limited use at present. And that will not change anytime soon. There is no way around the range shortcomings with EVs towing. And I have little doubt that the Cybertruck (which I am as excited about as anyone) will be absolutely no different. Gas F150s and the like will continue to dominate for years for this reason.

I've had my X for 3 years. Bought it new with all options. With my service visits I've had many opportunities to drive 3s and Ys and the first thing that I felt extremely uncomfortable about is having the one screen, especially because I had to quite deliberately take my eyes off the road just to look at it for general driving information. I hate it and wouldn't ever get either of those models. I wish they'd at the very least project things like speed onto the windscreen, or just give us the dash display back.

Putting the tech aside, I can't help wondering if the Semi has sacrificed driver safety. Their legs couldn't get much closer to the front of the cab. It sort of reminds me of the VW Bus which had virtually no production. Then again, none of the VW of the era showed any hints of caring about driver safety. I have no idea if driver safety is any better or worse than the typical disel cab.

Tesla has always said safety is their #1 priority when designing vehicles, and have shown that this is more than just talk by topping the safety charts when comparing to other vehicles in the same class. There's no reason to think the Semi, Cybertruck, or any other Tesla vehicle will be any different.

@@craighermle7727Oh ye of little faith. It's Tesla, they're pretty much obligated by now to be in the number one spot as far as safety goes. If you look at side shots of the semi, you'll notice that the driver is actually farther back than in most other tractors, there's lots more crumple zone. What gives the illusion of not being protected is the excellent unobstructed view the driver has. But it's going to be one of the safest tractors out there, not because of its construction, but because of its software.

Thanks. Elon seems to be screwing up more often than usual - Twitter, board earnings case, mansion fittings, launchpad deluge delays, brash political comments. Perhaps he is being caught up too much in factory detail. I hope he gets back on track soon.
What strategy would be best when humans are best for innovative ideas and AI is good for automation? Leave the factory designs & refinements to AI and free the humans for more innovations, not so?
For example, Tesla is building a supercomputer from A100 chips and Dojo chips. At some stage it might be better to skim off the A100 chips for factory design.
Show it videos, method statements and blueprints of each factory build and let it design the Mexican mega factory, complete with value chains, production performance, blueprints and method statements. Then let it design with more automation, less human labour, lower costs and higher profits! Pie in the sky? Probably high risk, high reward - the type of odds Elon likes!

I have followed the exploits of Elon Musk for about seven years. I applaud his engineering successes, but feel he has finally turned to the dark side politically. Neither US party is above reproach, but to side with the MAGAs suggests he has lost his mind. He recently tweeted a post suggesting that a short interval had passed without Ukraine begging for more US aid. The world's richest man demands government aid every time he sets up a factory. Just because he is a thoughtful engineer, does not mean he is the master of all domains; he does not have the bandwidth to be all things to all people. I liked him before he bought Twitter, now I think he has become a twit.
