    Hello, I’m 68 years old and have been thru the seasons of life, of single, young married, young parent, then busy parent time of teens and sports etc. So now I have a relatively large family home where just myself and husband are enjoying life on our own again and I realize watching your video that I have often done my decor thru my own sense of the change of seasons. As a busy parent on a very low budget to spread over 4 children, I often reached for bringing in seasonal foliage from my garden , walks etc. We certainly did the taste aspect and sound and also live using a couple of excellent oils. Thank you for reinforcing my sense of home making that has always been part of my life .

    I also change out my throw pillow covers. But since I live in a tiny house, I actually store the unused ones inside the couch cushions on the bottom side . 😂

    I have 75 bins of Christmas, collected over 50 years. This year I decorated on November 1st and only used 20 bins and 3 trees. It was freeing. My goal is to have only 10 bins total.

    Watched 3 minutes and before i go on: YES! I didnt know there was a word for me: cozy minimalist, haha )) one of the tricks im doing to escape clutter during Christmas is temporarily store even favorite decorative items like wall decor, paintings, lamps and replace them with Christmas items. This way the quantity of items doesnt change but the content changes and every time you enter a Christmas room your heart feels with joy, and you're never bothered by the idea that you will have to put it all back at some point. Great to find you: thanks!

    Yes, pillow covers! Every year I find myself wanting to pare down even more, and I am making that a goal this year. As I get out my Christmas decorations, I will give away those that aren't meaningful to me any more or I don't love looking at. Thank you for this timely message. You shouldn't dread decorating for Christmas (or the take down).

    This is me. Married now for 16 years at one time had 20 bins of Christmas, I decluttered it down to 4 but still felt the need to buys more each year. I’m back up to 6 and every year I feel overwhelmed with it all and after I decorate it feels way too cluttered.

  • @homemakingwithdenise
    @homemakingwithdenise 2 роки тому +10

    Hahaha! Diane, that’s me. 20 bins of Christmas decor. I downsized with a declutter for Christmas in July but I plan to downsize more after I decorate for this Christmas. I like her idea about anchor colors and pieces for the seasons. Her ideas are quite interesting. Thanks for sharing her with us.

    • @DianaKerr
      @DianaKerr  2 роки тому

      Hey Denise! That's my middle name! :) Denise was my mom's sister. :) You are of course welcome to have 20 bins if that is serving you and others (and God!) well! :) But it sounds like you DO want to downsize. I would say whatever you don't use this year, get rid of it! That's usually my "rule." Unless a certain holiday year was unusual (like I didn't put out all the breakable items because of a toddler, or I decided to not do all the decorating I normally do and pull back a bit), if I didn't want to use something this year, why would that change in an upcoming year? (For me, it won't. haha) Blessings on your decluttering!

    I’ve now reduced to just a Christmas tree and that’s the only Christmas decor I own. I’ve got a winter door wreath that will stay up until spring now. But that’s all I do these days. Our Christmas tree is NOT minimal or tasteful or colour coordinated - my kids are in charge of it and it’s a riot of colour! So I feel anything else on top of that is overkill. I’ve picked up some great tips to just give a nod to the seasons though, thankyou!

      It really has been so fun and so helpful for me to think of it that way, and to use what I already have that fits the seasons instead of thinking I need a bunch of signs that say "Happy fall, y'all" haha :) ("Not that there's anything wrong with that!" --Seinfeld reference anyone? :D)

    I too love the "seasonal" decorating approach the best! Whether we rent or own [I have done both] we are to be good stewards of what God provides for the different seasons of our lives.... God says in the scriptures to His people "you will live in houses you did not build and eat food you did not plant" -- we should let our gratitude and love for our God be reflected in our daily living.... live each day as though Jesus were coming to spend the day with us 💕💕💕

    Hahaha last year before we moved I had about 20 bins of Christmas decor plus the tree which was in a big box plus another large box that holds my large nativity set. When we moved I was able to pair it down to about 12 bins. This weekend I have set aside Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, to go through those bins and pair them down even more. I probably won’t even use half of what is in those bins this year but I found myself out shopping for other things and accidentally ending up looking at Christmas decor. I talked myself out of purchasing anything until I go through what I already have and I now realize That not only do I not need new stuff or more bins, but I have more stuff on hand that I will ever need. I’m hoping to get those 12 bins down to six and who knows maybe next year I’ll only have three!

    Hi Diana, I am new to your channel and you! I think you are so inspiring. As a fellow Christian Sister in Christ, I want my home to be welcoming and a blessing to my family. I have been married 36 years and we still live in our first home we built, it is not large but all we need! I love to decorate for all the holidays but I have always hated hurrying to decorate then having to wipe everything away the first week in Jan!!! I LOVE the thought of decorating for the season. I have not decorated yet, so I am going to keep this in mind as I go through my totes...I think I have 5 for Christmas. I am now disabled and everything I do is an effort so it seems like the best time to make less be more! My hardest part will be I enjoy DIYing to distract myself from pain and I now have a bedroom full of DIY craft supplies. Not sure how I work those in. I do love antiques and replica's so I guess I need to make my DIY's be "Season" related!!! God Bless you both. I look forward to going back and listening to more of your encouragement and inspiration.

    I’ve started to “pare things down” since moving into a condo. Also my husband died suddenly two years ago, and I’ve lost interest in seasonal decorating but still use a few things for the holidays. I focus on a couple lovely nativity sets, the mantle, front door and garland on the porch railing. I switched to a mannequin Christmas tree two years ago for a bit of whimsy. It doesn’t take long to decorate it or put items away after the holidays.

    I just subscribed to your channel! I am recently in the process of transitioning my to channel to more of a cozy minimalist style! This started when I had to move my craft supplies to a small walk in closet on the opposite end of my house. I do live in a small home. I got so overwhelmed with the amount of supplies that I have collected. When I tried to start creating again, I had nothing but a creative block! I decided since, I could not create, that I would spring clean in the fall! I completely cleaned out every space in my home!! It felt GREAT! I knew I needed to change my creating style and now I feel like I know where to start! I am also from mountain area of NC! Have a happy fall & winter season! Best of luck on your channel! Tonya PS. I am so on board about neutral items that I don’t have to pack away! My dishes can serve all seasons and holidays, my decor is mine- not dedicated to a holiday or season- where I will change out light cotton throws and pillows to fluffy and warm throws and pillows (throw pillows have slipcovers for them stored in my linen shelf in a bin as is tablecloths and cloth napkins). I, too, use flowers and greenery to mark the change of seasons and holidays. Diffusing essential oils to reflect seasons helps too. I am a cozy minimalist- I like my cozy, warm and welcoming home and decor- I just can’t have lots of stuff that causes my eyes to strain- too much visual items is just not in my lane. Plus, the less seasonal/holiday stuff, the less I have to pick up and clean and then pack away. I am a retired military spouse (my husband retired from the USAF) and I quickly learned that just a few things to keep instilled a sense of home no matter where we moved- 15 homes in 25 years but in the same home for this past 11 years.

    The funny thing is… I just wrote a big long comment in the Cozy Minimalist FB community about how I don’t feel like decorating for the holidays even though I’m hosting. I indicated that I just looked at my stash of Christmas decor and all my bins as “clutter”. I even asked the question “what is wrong with me?” Apparently nothing! Lol I thought I was just done in this year from moving, renovating and having Covid for the second time with symptoms lasting three weeks. I thought I was just a Bah Humbug. And the worst part is that I have the book referenced in this video (!) but I completely forgot that I had it because of all the moving/renovating it was packed away. Imagine my glee when I recently found it! (As I ferociously gobble it up). I should’ve known that I was going to be OK. I should’ve known there was another way to celebrate winter and the holiday. I should’ve known this information was right in front of me provided by Myquillan and The Minimalist Mom. Someone else commented here but they are 68. I am 67 and have been through many holidays where my decor looks like something out of a magazine to other years where it looked like it came from the five and dime. My mom and my sister are beautiful hostesses and decorators and trying to keep up with them has been fruitless. Why did it take me so many years to understand that it’s not a competition! I’ve always had it in me to be a cozy minimalist but I didn’t have a name for it, I didn’t know if it was a thing, I didn’t know what others would think. For the last few years I have been decorating for the holiday with more of a winter lock. So I had a star and didn’t even realize it. I’ve been keeping my Christmas decor fairly neutral, using lots of white and silver, frosty/forestey/wintery. I’ve never used red and green (except for greenery) because it’s never really fit in with my decor. But I do have a tendency to try and over decorate, thinking that every surface and window and wall needed something! In just a few short days I have gone from discouraged and depressed, to feeling “heard“ “validated” and “encouraged” and I owe that to you wonderful ladies as well as the wonderful people that make up the COMI community. I now have a plan. The focus will now be on the tree, and a different kind of tree, a minimalistic Scandi style tree. With the addition of some fresh greenery around my small condo and some white stockings. A few other small touches in the kitchen. I don’t feel like I can take this on so thank you for seeing me, seeing “us”. You’re all the best. ❤👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

    WOW! This was amazing and thanks to both of you for sharing! Living in Florida, I have done some of these things unconsciously like seasonal candles but never really thought of the five sense for a season and accenting for holidays. Mind blown!

      Haha Lynne I love this! I'm glad I'm not the only one whose mind has been blown by Myquillyn's tips! I mean, there's probably a reason her book on this topic is a NYT bestseller. haha Thanks for watching!

    This was great and sustainable and thoughtful. Thanks for sharing! I am hoping that this is not actually countercultural bc there is a great need for folks to be more mindful consumers in this day and age. I love what she said about the creativity and joy that comes from that along with designing the home. Great video!

    I’m from Wisconsin too ☺️ I love the ideas in this video, I get so overwhelmed with trying to decorate for holidays that I tend to avoid it. I definitely need to be more purposeful in how I decorate!

    I have 2 beans of Xma's decor, most lights and tree decorations. I do have two trees one for me one for my kids.
    I don't have pillows or blankets or dishes. I always wanted some but after I watched this, I think is nice to have just white dishes and put some Xma's decorations on the table to make it feel like Xma's and u can use the white dishes for any holidays season.
    I don't decorate my place for every season. fall and Christmas are the only one.

      Love that this video helped you feel content without Christmas pillows/blankets/dishes! Nothing wrong with them, but you are not missing out if you don't have them. :)

    I know now that no amount of videos will clean and declutter my house for me. Sometimes you just got to DO it!!!! Then I fill fulfilled and more content when my home is CLEAN.

    I don’t know if it is possible, but is it possible to make this one available without the music? It is hard for me to focus with the music, maybe more people have that problem? If not I totally respect that too of course☺️

      K.C. Mary. It’s funny how they both talk about minimalist. And how having less but, but then we have to deal with the under laying distraction of music….which adds nothing….It’s just one of the …..cute…fluffy things that is actually clutter…..say one thing but she does the opposite…..this is my first time to this vlog……I felt uptight listening to the intro….speaking so fast….so her living with less and cozy life style. Must be not making her very relaxed

      Hey! Thanks for the feedback! I did take it to heart! My video editor chose to start adding music in without me asking for it and I guess I just thought, "Well, he knows more about UA-cam than me so that's probably what people want!" haha I do know that for some people music is nice (I LOVE background music while I listen to the Bible on the Dwell app) and I know for others it's super distracting. So the next video I have coming out I told him to use very minimal music! Again, thanks! I'm always learning and willing to hear constructive feedback.

      Haha I didn't even realize I talked fast! We talk a lot faster in the Midwest than some other parts of the country. :) Sorry it was distracting. Certainly not my intent. Thanks for commenting.

      Ah yes I understand. Glad to hear that, I don’t mind a bit of music (can be very atmospheric) if the volume and beat aren’t too loud 😊

    Wow, this is exactly the video I needed! I live in Europe, in Belgium. I was raised as a catholic but I'm not a practicing believer. But I do love the Christian values and traditions very much. I just didn't know how I could bring them into our life and our home and put my focus back on the real meaning of the holiday season. I was just so fed up with all the commerce and bling bling that the holidays have become. That is not what I want my 2 young boys to believe the holidays are about! But now that I have watched this video, I'm feeling ready for a beautiful and meaningful season for myself and my children. Thank you! ❤️

    Over these past 5 years I have become more and more minimalist but absolutely love decorating for those 21 days of Christmas and it brings me and my family such joy.Just like I would decorate for a birthday or family celebration (only for a few days)and as a believer look at it as celebrating the birth of the one who saved me. I have 20 boxes or even more and have bought things very intentionally and have lasted me for so many years.
    I think you can decorate without it being cluttered.I don’t buy things every year, only if I see something which I really love and see fitting into my style. Not that I disagree but I look at it differently. Thanks for sharing.

    Also, the target comments are hilarious! That’s so me. I would watch all these UA-cam videos on Instagram feeds and go to the “like to know it” app and shop all the Instagram feeds. Much of the stuff is from target and I just love Target. But every year there’s a whole new thing, a whole new theme, a whole new quote have to have”. I admit I stole peek at the Instagram feeds and click “shop my Instagram” because I’m basically nosy lol but I find that I’m purchasing less and less. But you gotta love target!
