    I was on the video engineering crew for this. Shot in the Wayne State Univ. studios, the show, "Conversations in Depth," aired on ch. 56, was hosted by Seymour Ricklin. That night's show topic was "The Hippies." John Sinclair and Harvey Ovshinsky on the panel, don't recall who the other two were.

    This shows how quickly rock had changed within a short period of time. It’s doubtful a performance like this would be seen just a year before in 1966. The Experience, Cream and The Who were changing the dynamics. Music was becoming louder, longer and more abrasive. In fact proto heavy metal. In San Francisco some guys called Blue Cheer were taking note.

    • @impalaman9707
      @impalaman9707 3 роки тому +19

      MC5 would only get louder the year after this performance. The SUNN amps they were using here were only Yardbirds/KInks level. Once they upgraded to Marshall stacks in time for "Kick Out The Jams" they were up to Blue Cheer levels, sonically, and in fact---even gigged with Blue Cheer at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit in June 1968 which was considered to be the loudest gig of the 60s!

      @@mookytc. Todo eso se explica por la existencia de talento. Los grupos populares dejan la valla alta para que los que continúen puedan superarla. El período desde el nacimiento del rock hasta mediados de los '70 fue el mejor de la música. Y no solo hablo de rock, hablo, además, de blues, soul, jazz, rythm and blues, pop, música latina, etc.

If you gotta have ads, put them at the beginning or end, not right in the midst of a performance. Even broadcast TV doesn't do THAT.) R.I.P. Wayne Kramer, Rob Tyner, Fred Sonic Smith, Michael Davis)

    My first musical memories were the Doors and CCR, etc, blasting out of our hippy neighbors reel-to-reel in 1969. My folks thought Elvis was too much. "The Cowdens sure do burn a lot of incense!" I vividly remember my Mom saying. I was besties with their kid, so I was there a lot. I got a second hand taste, so to speak, and developed a deep appreciation for all things 60s, especially cats like the MC5.
    This is what the internet is for. They will mostly be gone in 10 years, but as the past becomes more high def as we instantly conjure it from our pockets I appreciate this generation even more. I've been lucky to cross paths over the years with many of my heroes, including Brother Wayne, the Stooges... and Tony Bennett... who was an activist in his own right. His driver was murdered by the Klan. So, yeah, keep on keeping' on ya'll. Peace!

He grew up in Detroit and told stories about the mc5 and how they used to dress up in mod style clothing before being the mc5 that we are all familiar with. Sensing some yardbirds inspired jams. Another great story he told us was how his band ended up beating the mc5 in a local battle of the bands! Super awesome footage obviously the practice and original material is what eventually made them really friggen cool.

    Guitarist outfits were pretty typical for 1967. Later they would have a very different style, especially Fred Smith. Wayne Kramer you can see was heavily influenced by Hendrix who exploded at Monterey Pop Festival earlier that year. Wayne was experimenting with the distortion from the amps.
    All in all a very low energy performance by the MC5. Not typical for them at all in later years. Rob Tyner especially looked like he was just not into it at all. Not typical for his later high energy performances. This is a group that needed a live audience of kids. They fed off of that energy. Old guys covering their ears in a TV stuido didn't quite do that for them.

      Everyone is "influenced" by someone else. It was 'the sound' of that time, but they were way ahead of their time! Their sound was MC5. Call out the kudos on the shredding and the feedback/distortion and what have you but, they wouldn't have had "that sound" if they didn't have Rob Tyner for their front man. RIP Rob. Punk on, brother.

    Two thoughts: 1) Rob Tyner's afro "starter kit". 2) Sonic Smith's "CLANG-CLANG-CLANG" would soon become "BUZZ-BUZZ-BUZZ" once they progressed from Sunn Amps to Marshalls. At this point in 1967, their tone was at Yardbird levels. Not bad, but not the Blue Cheer like metal crunch they would have the following year once they got the Marshall stacks

    is that Wayne kramer with the mo-stash ? looks totally different from the 1972 Wayne kramer the weird thing is also that the guys are positioned in exactly the same places on stage as 5 years later

      nope... the guy with the mustache is michael davis (bass), while wayne kramer is just next to him, showing us his back at the begining of the show.

    It's quite amusing to see the MC5 in kaftan robes à la Strawberry Alarm Clock (except for Rob Tyner that looks like an early Byrd).
    However their music say otherwise.
    RIP Brother Wayne.

    Channel 56, was that a UHF channel local to Detroit in those days?

    • @johnclifford544
      @johnclifford544 6 років тому +2

      Yes. It had mostly educational and local current affairs shows. Late at night it was where we kids got our first glimpses of nudity on screen, when they aired Monty Python and Benny Hill, uncensored. Unfortunately the signal was weak and reception was terrible in most places.

    • @shruggzdastr8-facedclown

      It's a shame that the cable revoulution gradually killed UHF -- there was some good, quality, and original programming available via that format back in the day.

    That strange part starting around 5:30 is so far out this is the best thing they ever did for me. I love shit like this that just falls apart and comes together again. this kinda thing they did here is like what The Godz did. Yeah, The Godz I guess werent near as good technically but stil..
    They had a lot of balls (MC5) to do this on tv and not give a shit. Its great

      The Raymonds were pre Ramones, even before Dust. They were Manitoba and Dee Dee's lil side project. I'm surprised you didn't know that already, grease nugget.
