Blues Traveler's "Hook" || I LOVE THIS SONG || The Rock Critic

- For the next episode of I LOVE THIS SONG we cover one of my childhood faves: Blues Traveler's "Hook".
For a song that's about not having anything to say, it actually says... quite a lot.
(NOTE: Forgive me for the lack of music video footage on this one. Had a lot of copyright bots to dodge. Thanks UMG.)

Who knew Linkara could belt it so hard---on both vocals and harmonica, no less?
He's probably related to Harvey Finevoice.

When Crash started yelling about Dystopia, my internet connection stopped working and the video paused. As if it wasn't an angry enough moment by itself...
Dave Mustaine has entered the chat
9:54 "Y'all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance."
*WELL ACTUALLY DEEZ NUTS* may be my favorite Rock Critic moment.
That whole bit on Canon made me think about how we'd be in deep shit if people started copyrighting chord progressions. Once we do that, what's to stop people copyrighting scales, rhythms, cadences, the list goes on.
This song is so 90's it almost hurts, but it hurts SO GOOD!
"Well actually deez nuts"
-The Rock Critic, 2019
I voted for this song on the Patreon because I felt, while the other choices were more important to music history, this one had more to say about the actual song itself. And I spent the entire video reading to post a comment (though better phrased) "Crash, you forgot to talk about--" yet every single time I had a new thing you'd "forgotten", I just needed to be patient because you covered everything.
Also, called the Green Day cameo when the poll closed, most well-known and on-brand for the channel version of Pachelbel's Canon.
Also, I cannot believe I didn't get immediately where you were going with the taco...so you got me with that joke.
Crash's secret talent with the bridge of this song is me with the verses of It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
The first Blues Traveler song I remember listening to was "Run Around". Thanks for highlighting another song of theirs,Crash!
I know people dislike greatest hits albums but if you listen to 25 by them it has tons of great songs.
I might be seeing them play their album “Four” in its entirety on November 13th in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Neat!
Yep!!!! Thanks for making me laugh and helping me survive my stroke and seizure. You’re an inspiration, Crash!!!!
10:26 that right there is not photogenic jezuz
“If you can’t beat em... show off!”

"Why do I know [Crazy Frog] exists?"
You think that's bad? Over in the UK, I had to put up with him being on the radio, and now I'm no longer able to hum one of my favourite synthesizer themes ever in public without SOMEONE impersonating that dastardly amphibian.
I'm glad his version of Popcorn wasn't much of a hit.
Same with Russia, this plague was inescapable for over a two-three years.
Didn't he have a cart racer, too?
Four was one of the first albums I bought
Absolutely amazing album and Hook is an amazing song
Y4123 I might be seeing them play “Four” in its entirety on November 13th in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
18:53-19:22 This is the mood I'm writing my goddamn papers in
The hook to this song is what brings me back
I love Dance Gavin Dance...
But yeah they are NOT the deepest band out there! Their lyrics are like an acid trip while watching Pop Team Epic.
Acid tripception.
Skipped Travelers and Thieves?
Oh, life I embrace you
I shall honor and disgrace you
Please forgive if I replace you
You see I'm going through some pain
But now I see clearly
And the dawn is coming nearly
And though I'm human and it's early
I swear I'll never forget again
I've noticed you're inclusion of Silent Alarm in your poster behind you, any thought to talking about the Dance-Punk/Post-Punk scene? Lots of great Rock albums in the 00s were from that scene
Rocked lead me to your video on Hero from Spider-Man. I checked out your favorite songs on Float On. Tried this one.
"WELL ACTUALLY DEEZ NUTS"
This is perfect and I am here for this
I love how you explain the "Taco Bell riff" in a way that everyone can understand it. This might be my favorite video you've made. Props from Argentina, dude. 🤘🇦🇷 P.S.: 24 minutes into the video i remembered the songs title is "THE HOOK". I'm slower on weekends. 😝
15:40 EVERYBODY. Even anime has used it! Fairy Tail and Clannad! Those are just two that I found with a quick Google search!
Don't forget, Angel Beats
On another note, your message about the trickery reminds me of how System of a Down is like "Can you say Brainwashing?" in their song Violent Pornography. I mean yes I do enjoy music despite the trickery aspect of it, but we were in an audience of over 60k people screaming along to their music and they get to this part and my husband throws his hands up like "HELLO!?! You see what music can do to people?!" as everyone is in sync singing the song together. I don't really know anything about music, but the fact they can essentially hack our brains with music tricks is just awesome. Good video again, my friend!
Not gonna lie at all, I had completely forgotten about this song until this video was uploaded, then, I remembered about this song again. So, I listened to it, and, damn, was it way more clever nowadays than it was when I was like 10.
20:55 Aww that tiny jab took me back just like the hook itself XD
NWO/Illuminati/MediaWillCONSUMEyourSOUL conspiracy theory phase was my fun phase. Ah, memories
I love it man! You're my favorite music reviewer of all time!
Thank ye kindly!
I was eating Taco Bell watching this video
...nyeh?
On Pachelbel's Canon: Doo-Wop is pretty much a simplified version of the chord progression.
This song brings me back to being a young lad. Still a banger today.
They have recorded the BEST cover of Secret Agent Man....simply unmatched
I actually know them because of their collaboration with Bowling For Soup with 2 songs (which are good also) "Right here, waiting for you" and "I know right". I recommend it and basically I could say that I found two more songs that I like now from Blues because of you, thanks man. (BTW, I don't know if you saw my tweet on Twitter [@Hendrixjcs10] and made a suggestion as a idea for you to probably make a "green day retrospective " kind of style to Blink-182. After all, they have a new album on the way and would love to see your opinion on the blink albums in the near future.) so anyway, great video as always and have a good day. 🤘😎
Your “I love this song” videos were my favorite videos of yours from 2019. I hope 2020 treats you well, Crash! Here’s to more great stuff!
On the "everybody's heard it" part...if you've watched Scary Movie 2 you've heard it. "Hey! Would you STFU and let me sing?!" 😂
No love for Blind Melon in the 90s jam bands? They're even another "one hit wonder"with two actual hits (or three by the rock standard, with 'Galaxie' off their vastly unappreciated second album also making it)
Hinder's actually a two (top 40), or even three (by the alt.rock chart) hit wonder. IF you needed more reasons to question the mid-late 2000s rock scene.
I can honestly say I can't recall hearing Hook before, though the name sounds familiar. Run Around's familiar, but I thought it was Barenaked Ladies for whatever reason.
It sucks that their singer OD’ed
R.I.P. Shannon Hoon
“How do you even get that good, man?”
From 102nd St/LaGuardia Airport Entrance, stay to the right and continue onto the LaGuardia Access Rd, make a slight left, and merge onto Grand Central Pkwy. Continue onto I-278 East. Take exit 46 toward Manhattan/Randalls Island, and onto the RFK Bridge. Take the left southbound exit onto FDR, then take exit 11 for East 53rd. Turn right onto 3rd Ave. Turn left after Duane Reade (on the right). Pass by Hotel 57 (on the left), and you’ll be at 881 7th Ave.
Actually, ignore all that. Just practice, practice, practice!
i think they had a cameo in blues brother's 2000 and iwas looking for this band
Am I the only one who thinks this is the best Crash video? How does it only have 10k views?
it! sincerely! you do it brilliant!
Bro!!!!! "I'm terrible why do you guys watch me?"🤣🤣🤣🤣 laughing so hard IRL right now!! I'm subscribing because you DESERVE it!
This video was so fun to watch, you are hysterical! Glad I found your channel.
Are we just gonna whistle past our boy keeping duct tape within arms reach while he's in his room chilling?
Has anyone ever returned from his basement?
Great video by the way! Loved it
Meta upon meta. So great! Best review of this song ever! Sorry it took me this long to sift through UA-cam BS to find it!
BTW I'm sure you know this, but just in case, the reference to "suck it in" is because both German Shepard and Ann Boleyn are known for there small waists!
This blew my mind
Never heard about this band or thier songs, but sounds pretty interesting. Is their albums any good?
Video is great (actually I would call it amazing, easily in your top 5 best), hope to see more this type of video-essays in the future, you rock)
Алексей Al Check out Runaround
I feel like some of the jam-ish bands like Blues Traveler and Hootie and the Blowfish hit big success simply because every music exec latched onto any band that wanted to sound like Nirvana and Soundgarden for 4 years and that sound(with less than stellar copycats) became over saturated in the airwaves. Which is unfortunate because that late 80's/early 90's underground/alt rock is probably my favorite rock era.
So I'm NOT the only one with the bridge memorized! FYI that part kills it at karaoke
Holy shit that was an amazing job singing that verse. I would make a video just to do that too, if i could sing lol
I really loved the message and the video and the songs in general for both hits. They're both just fun songs and I have a lot of memories of my family singing along to them while visiting ghost towns in Arizona. Plus they played on the radio while I was waiting for my littlest sister to be born. Blues Traveler was definitely a unique sound in the 90s and I appreciated that even if I don't know too much about them. Growing up in the 90s, I too noticed that people seemed to shy away from the "ugly people" like the lead singer of this band and Meatloaf (another big hit on the radio while waiting for my sister to be born) and others. The 90s were weird.
The word you are looking for @ 37:05 is Endure. Also I thought about KT Tunstall yesterday, check out her acoustic cover of I Want You Back
Some chord progressions just click in the brain no matter how done to death they are. Pachelbel's a big one, another would be whatever you call that chord progression used in (as an example) the chorus of "Something Just Like This," or a crapton of ZUN's Touhou songs. Easy way to squirt some unspoken emotion into the foundation of a song.
That run was really good. I do it all the time. But we cant do it after an amazing harmonica solo. lol. I play harmonica and I could never sound like John Popper.
I just noticed that the background is slightly tilted and it *b o t h e r s* me
Run Around reminds me a lot of British folk-punk from that period, especially The Levellers' first album - A Weapon Called The Word (and to a lesser extent, their hit follow up Levelling The Land). They were more in the vein of Clash and Zounds (plus violin and oh god can Jon Sevink play that mother), with political agenda to boot, but the vibe is really similar. You might enjoy them/be intrigued for few minutes, especially given their varied discography (Letters From Underground is a good, punkier entry point, as is Zeitgeist)
I remember when Nirvana predicted Weezer.
10:32 #ANNIEDESERVEDBETTER THANK YOU
yes yes yes yes yes yes yes! That's my Karaoke Song!
I have always been big into lyrics so I caught this immediately (minus the whole Pacabelle thing) and tried to tell a few people to actually listen to it but no one ever did...
Crash you look like the singer of the spin doctors
Crash, do you like the Residents? I would love to see a review of one of their albums from the seventies.
friend of mine just sent me to your channel. I hit subscribe as soon as I heard you sing in this vid. :)
Blues Traveler rocks hard. F*ck marketable; bands that are true to themselves are always way more interesting than the alternative.
I hate to say this, but I thought John Popper was dead, idk why I thought that for so long!? Glad to just find out that he is not.
Edit: Omg, my whole life I thought the lyric was, "The heart brings you back..." I didnt know the song title was "Hook." Wow, I'm learning a lot today 😓
Edit Edit: Lyrics are important to me, you wouldn't be able to tell by my above comment, but I'm not a huge BT fan, as much as I love the songs by them that I've heard, I never did a deep dive into their music. But, I dissect and examine the lyrics of all my favorite bands, I often won't fall in love with a band or musician unless their lyrics are well-written, clever and/or full of fodder for personal growth or reflection on topics important to me. The Cure, Elliott Smith, The Decemberists, Band of Horses, Nirvana, Tool & APC, all of them have amazing lyrics that keep my brain hooked and entertained.
Anyways, cool video, it was great to learn more about Blues Traveler, I've always wondered what the heck John was singing about but never took the time to look further.
I THOUGHT THIS WAS A LOVE SONG GODDAMMIT!
Fantastic analysis!
0 dislikes, how it should be for all your videos!
This was the first cd I ever bought. It was those two singles that sold me on it. That was also my first experience with jam music, and the first time I realized I really, really hated jam music. Those singles were a real bait and switch. Oh well, at least Four netted me a real good monster in Monster Rancher.
I now have a new lyrical hero. Thanks Crash!
Cuppa Coffee in the big time, OOOHH YEAHHH!! DIG IT!!
Hook is great but my favorite Blues Traveler song has always been Crash & Burn. They fucking destroy on that. My dad used to listen to them all the time when I was a kid so it's just a band I've always listened to.
YouGotToBeKitten TM I might be seeing them play their album “Four” in its entirety on November 13th in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Just wondering, is the curtain behind you one that you designed yourself from all of your favorite albums?
More or less, yep.
Might do this for my spring concert at school.
The funny thing about pop music is that while the general public don't really pay attention to the lyrics, they don't seem to know what to make of instrumental music either.
I actually think about Gotye a lot. He had a lot more to offer than his only hit, and I think he deserved more.
I wonder if Pachelbel's Canon in D has been used in Country or Bluegrass.
10:25 10:25 10:25 10:25
16:06 No, from that angle, you look like Rock and Roll Santa (or my uncle) and I want to give you a bear hug.
🎅\m/ hohoho! Lol
Homie! You are the third person I've ever known that can do the fast part to Hook. Legit! Also, Bob was great. I miss Bob.
I think this song won out, cause it hasn't been talked about again and again since it's release
and it isn't overrated like SLTS
I still listen to KT Tunstall haha
Drew Anderson Suddenly I see....
I too know every word of hook. You killed it.
You should do a I Hate This Song of Puddle Of Mudd-Blurry or something
I've always loved this song since I was a kid. This vid is fascinating. Still love it!
22:32 I love it! XD
Oh, and also, when do you plan finishing two unscripted and open request tier?
Requests will probably open here VERY soon. I want to get a FIMI done and then before the end of March we can hopefully kick that first wave of requests off.
@@CrashThompson Sweet, I looking for it! Also, your version of Hook bridge is amazing, can you do Scatman cover)
Real talk? Yes, at its highest, most transcendent level, lyrics and songs can be dripping with meaning to illuminate and beauty to move to tears. But god help us if music ever feels the need to just stop trying to be fun.
And Hook is a fucking blast. From a canon.
(hah.)
John Popper is the shit.
Can you do an "Unscripted" for the new Black Keys song
Scatman reference!
Most underrated band!
10:25 ..... Kawaii af
Ah yes the blues traveler so ng that isnt runaround
I can do that too, bro. lol Good job.
It's not a cop-out. It's a call-out
I was honestly really surprised to find out John Popper is like a hardcore libertarian gun nut.
05:42 because almost everyone does
Great video
They are the OG trollsss got us feeling hyped up 😆😆on this track...💕them😁..crash your awesome yu got pipes
I wonder how they feel about this song becoming such a hit. I guess it's vindication, in a way. :)
5:50 Why does this have a cart game?
HOLY SHIT I FORGOT BLUES TRAVELLER EXISTED
Fuck yeah! Rock on BT!
