My interest has peaked towards turbos as of late. I'd like to do a low buck turbo install on one of my low compression440s. I was amazed how much a turbo can wake up even a smogger /RV 440 or anything else as far as that goes. Right now I'm looking at several videos from various folks. I'm thinking about getting in on the fun! As always your videos are like a how to clinic for us Mopar fans. Thanks for sharing.
This is going to be sweet! Can't wait to see the progress. I just love the 400, It's the strongest factory block you can get. I let the last one I had get away a few years back and still kicking myself for it. They ain't getting any easier to come by.
Thanks brother! I haven’t at all. I’m a man of my word. It should be easier now that I have a tig welder, and I bought a fitech kit 😅 from my buddy good to 650 horse.
Yes the oilpan pickup having notches in it IS a factory thing. I have cracked several pans off and have found those visegrip-like marks in several of them, exact same place even. You planning on going with a safe psi of 8lbs ? You can throw 6-8 in any old stock B/RB and run for days.
Because the RB rods on a B crankshaft gives you what Mopar Performance considers to be the optimal best performance rod ratio. And I do not question mother Mopar....
This I so cool, a turbo 400 big block Mopar! There was a time back in my 20's I was going to build that same combination with 440 4bbl rods and custom forged pistons, I can't weight.... Keep up your awesome work Joe.
The letters on the side of the block are the exact size of the bore. The code is in the Mopar engine book if you read it very closely. Then the engine builder grabs a piston closest to that size.
Hey Joe, the 400 as you can tell was a "poor man's rebuild" someone tore er down and appears to have been a rod failure or something to leave those marks on the main. As well as you saw the copper/rust color on a couple of the con rods, that's an old school trick to use for resizing the rods back to stock size without machining. It's a copper chemical dip similar to when parts get chromed. And with the date code on the rod bearings, they either reused the bearings or it happened super early in it's life and it was machined and repaired for the lowest dollar possible. Should still be a good engine though. I'm betting Ed's machining will know about the copper coating.
That would be sweet! I am doing a 400 build up soon with stock stroke and some mold upgrades. Hope to touch the 500 hp mark, and actually take it to a dyno
Very cool. I've had a 400 B enginefor years and really need a build that's budget friendly and driver friendly.Recent thinking has me leaning towards blow through tbi or carb.
@@JustMoparJoe Lol probably not! You coincidentally chose the ideal candidate for a turbo.400 has low compression and is plenty strong, argueably one of the strongest chrysler engines.Even 6 psi will make over 500 hp.Fuel management is key, so thinking some sort of injection is best?

Joe gave up on the turbo because of carb limitations. Honda guys love them b18 already come with electronic ignition n the most important part MULTIPORT INJECTION. A perfect afr wins races.
@@JustMoparJoe v6 penstar from ebay are less than 2k instal turbo $500 hit 400hp with multiport injection. Fitech is trottle body fuel injection obsolete in force induction systems. It works but the penstar is cheaper n reliable for daily.
2 questions do you think those 440 Source rods are better than stock with new bolts? And I hope you're going to add some kind of baffle in that oil pan or it will definitely suck air when you take off
Thomas, I may have too many irons in the fire to keep up. The turbo engine will be the near stock 400 that I happened upon. The 400 build up I’m doing will be the engine that replaces that 400. So my ultimate goal is 500 horsepower. First it will be attempted by boost. Secondly, it will be the nicer more permanent build up of the 400, from todays video. If ever I have to race car with a stock oil pan, I was taught to add an extra quart of oil. It may have more windage, but will also have more oil to access at the higher rpm. The nicer 400 build has a deep pan and pickup.
Question 2: I believe the 440 source rods have the capability of being better, if a stock rod wasn’t swapped to arp bolts, shot peened, and floated. Either would be great for this build.
