On this section of line, there are nine less tunnels than when the NIMT was first opened in 1908:
Tunnel name: Comment:
Black } these six tunnels were bypassed by the three viaducts to the east
Sandstone or Possum }
Deer }
Elk or Utiku }
Moose }
Mangaweka North or Kowhai }
Mangaweka South or Powhakaroa still in use
Makohine daylighted during electrification. South portal still exists
Kiwi or Mangaonoho daylighted in 1972. The first tunnel removed on the NIMT.
Moa or Kaikarangi bypassed in 1983. Can be seen up on the right at 25:02

Had this started in Taihape yards then the Beaver tunnel would be included in this list.

I only recently discovered that the Kiwi or Mangaonoho wasn't the first tunnel removed on the NIMT.
There was originally a 30.5 metre long tunnel at Mercer that was daylighted in 1937.
