What's really disturbing to me is Leonor removing her grandmother's arm from around her. There must be some serious bad blood going in this family right now.
M99980 Leonor attempted twice to remove her grandmother's arm. Only once did Letizia have her hands up near Leonor's face. You think she was pulling Leonor's ear and I think she brushed past Leonor's ear trying to take the grandmother's hand off Leonor's shoulder.
Or that fact that her grandmoter wrapped her arm around her neck twice and was pulling her into her and making her unstable. Of course the mother did pull on her ear and touched her grandmothers hand but the grandmother was pulling her around a bit. She just might have been uncomfortable.

Yes, the royal family is expected to stand still for photos. It was only a few seconds which will not hurt any one of them. IMO...Princess Leonor needs more royal training. I tried to read the comments to understand the situation and here's the possibilities.
Grandmother:
One, the grandmother was forcing them to take photos with her, which made princess uncomfortable and shoved away the hand. Seeing her mother made her even more firm.
Two, the grandmother just wanted to take some pictures with them, but the mother didn't allow it. The princess looked at her mom and saw the warning, hence pulling away.
Mother:
One, the mom was pulling the princess's ear.
Two, the mom was brushing her hand on her cheek and tuck the hair behind her ear.
Princess:
You could clearly see when she was outside and not between anyone's arms, her feet pointed towards the grandmother. It's either she was doubting on doing something, feeling guilty (cause she acted like a kid, she's a royal y'know and those rules, sheesh), or she wanted to be cautious around her.
When they stood still and took a photograph, she stood even farther away from the grandmother, at the front row.
Again, this is what I gained from the comments. I find it intriguing as I kept having doubts about this years old video that nobody really cared about.

The Photographers are not intruding on a private event here. The family is present for a MAJOR religious event, and are together on an occasion when they would normally be expected to be photographed by the press.

This "queen" Letizia has zero class. There have been many times I've been upset with my MIL but have never kept my children from her affection, especially in public... and I'm no royal.

Most children are in pictures that no one asked their permission to take, and pulling child relatives in for a picture is a VERY normal thing for grandparents, aunts/uncles to do. Sophia did nothing rude or out-of-the ordinary - and a simple picture is NOT "interference". It's a picture with a grandparents. Nothing more, nothing less. Also, being a grandmother is no small thing - so the "grandma card" SHOULD be pulled. That is a very close relationship - it's the parent of your parent. MOST people of all cultures show deference to grandparents. It is a very monumental thing when that relationship is disrupted.

Stopping a grandmother from taking a picture with her grandchild is not a reasonable thing to do unless under extreme circumstances (such as the grandparent being dangerous or a bad influence in some way). Letizia is free to raise her children however she wants, but that doesn't mean that she won't be criticized and that people won't have an interest in the well-being of the children (look at how emotionally disturbed her daughter becomes after mother's intervention). It also doesn't mean that she isn't ultimately negatively impacting her own children. Many children grow up to resent their parents for behavior like this.
This also seemed to me that the Queen Mother was simply trying express some appropriate public affection toward her grand daughters. In every traditional culture being appropriately deferential to one’s elders is a basic requirement if one is not to be considered boorishly rude. As far as I know Queen mother Sofia did nothing that required her husband to abdicate the Spanish throne. That was all the former King’s doing. Plus as Queen consort, Letizia is lower ranking than her daughters, both of whom are in line to become actual Queen of Spain. I cannot see such an off-putting occurrence happening in any other royal family that I know of.
I remember reading something about how Queen Letizia would not allow Dowager Queen to have photos with the girls as it was for a magazine. She was ignored and thr Dowager Queen tried to take them anyway. I beleive it was also just after a religious ceremony.

If you see other longer videos the grandma grabs the girls by the arms forcefully and drag them around for a picture but Letizia is walking in the front, all of a sudden Letizia pulls the girl's ear while the grandma is pressing her shoulder, the girl had it and pushes the arms of both women away. Then they walk out, the grandma kisses the girl on the forehead and Letizia immediately cleans it away with her hand. Very akward but that's what happens when you have to force a smile all the time.

We don't know the full story, here. Maybe mom told Grandma before hand that she didn't want HER KIDS taking pictures. (Key words, HERS). Grandma ups and decides she wants to take pictures anyway. Mom gets angry because maybe Grandma is always undermining her wishes concerning HER children. Grandma, instead of stepping back, decides to assert her dominance and continues on with the picture. Dad, aware of reporters and photographers, moves in to de-escalate the situation.
Grandma should have stepped back. At the end of the day, these aren't her kids. If Mom didn't want the kids taking pictures, Grandma should have respected that, even if she didn't agree. And yes, while it's true that these kids, being royals, are going to be photographed regardless, it still wasn't Grandma's place to disregard mom's wishes. I'm a firm believer that we should respect our elders, but at the same time, elders also need to realize that they too need to respect others. Being old doesn't give you the right to disregard others feelings.

The grandmother can be seen swaying the girls away from mother before the child is pulled toward her mother by the ear. The child tosses grandmother's hand. The father and grandfather both react.
Just watched in slow motion. The child's ear was *not* pinched or pulled. Mother smoothed the girl's hair behind her ear. The older woman pushed mother away from her child and grabbed the girl twice as she tried to get away. Shocking behavior for sure.

I think grandma was posing for press photos with the girls, and Leticia didn't want them to be photographed, that's why she stands in front of them ruining the shot. Even though it doesn't look pleasant, and she should have handled it differently, and by the way, I'm not a fan of Leticia, she is their mom and she decides whether they can be photographed or not.
She is their grandmother and they still have a father.
Then why bring them to an event where there are press photos? They are royalty. Of course there will be press photos! The only thing these people do is be seen. If Letizia was really so concerned about this to the point that she is willing to prevent a grandmother from taking photos with her grandchildren, she wouldn't have brought her children there in the first place. She would've kept them at home, and/or attended a private service where there are no photos.
Also, just because she is their mother doesn't make all of her decisions reasonable. Mothers can and are frequently wrong and make bad decisions. You don't do something like this in public - or even in private, I would say. Look how disturbed her children are. There's just no reason for this at all.

Perhaps Queen Sophia's problem with Queen Letizia before may have been merited. However, it didn't need such a poor display of behavior. I'm glad that King Felipe saw this and should keep notes of it. That is his mother. Whatever the issue is, the children should be held out of it and let the adults deal with it.

This is unfortunate, but it could be that Letizia--and her husband to a certain extent--wants to keep arm's length from the King and Queen Emeritus.
Queen Sofia is popular, but it should be remembered that she put up with her husband's philandering and hanging around with shady rich people, which behavior eroded his support and eventually forced him to abdicate. Sofia's brother of course played politics and lost his throne and the Greek monarchy.
Letizia may be overcautious to the point of rudeness, but there are good reasons why she would not want her daughters to be influenced much by her grandparents.

She was saving her kids for something they clearly didn’t want. Grandma saw an opportunity to promote herself using her granddaughters and mom put an immediate stop to it by just blocking the shot. She don’t yank them away. And they clearly wanted to get away. As a mom, I could see them not wanting to be overtly rude to grandma but were wanting mom to handle it. And she did.

The mother stroked her daughter's hair down the side of her head and while doing so, the grandmother, gripping the daughter (her granddaughter) with her arm, attempted to circumvent the mother (her daughter-in-law), pushing the granddaughter forward with her arm as a result. That makes it appear as if the mother is tugging her daughter's ear for a split second, but it's just the daughter's bodily reaction of being forced forward by her neck (by her grandmother) at the very moment when the mother's hand happens to reach that area. It's difficult to see what the grandmother is doing with her hand/wrist at that moment as it is blocked from our view by the mother's arm/blouse, but it appears that she may have been reaching forward to push back on the mother's arm or at the very least, gesturing for the mother to get out of her way. As it caused the daughter to be jerked/forced forward awkwardly twice in succession, and possibly because the mother was objecting to a photo being taken of her girls at that moment, the daughter reacts by removing the grandmother's hand/arm from her neck/shoulder.
As for what was said and why the mother was clearly trying to prevent the photograph from happening is another story--who knows. Maybe a photo was already planned for out front in better lighting or those photographers out front were to have priority for that shot. It's a royal world... who knows.

I understand and support Queen Letizia, at the time her daughters were minors so she had every right to decide if they should pose for the press, not the insufferable grandmother.
