NOTE: This is a reupload of the 8-hour edit I posted on May 20th. There were a couple other issues with the audio which have since been corrected. There are no other changes. Hopefully this should be the final version.
It's just crazy, the entire segment about helmets and gloves with Dale Earnhardt, it is just... Like foreshadowing. I wonder if DW felt like he could've pushed harder for Dale to wear a full-face helmet or HANs device...
also at 4:31:43, I didn't realize that Kyle Petty was one of the first drivers, & I believe there were only a few (like 3-5 drivers max) that actually wore the HANS Device before it was fully mandated to wear. I credit all the safety features that came from the 2001 Daytona 500 crash that killed Dale Earnhardt and later that year, and also killed one of Jimmie Johnson’s closest friends, Blaise Alexander, in the fall Charlotte fall race whose death immediately/ ultimately led to the HANS Device becoming mandatory before the fall Talladega WSC race, the 2001 EA Sports 500, the one could argue that it should’ve been mandated long before that along with the safer barriers, close face, helmets, and the 6/7 point safety system that quickly became the standard going forward from the end of the 2001 NASCAR season - obviously to present day & beyond!
@@RealRyanJKaz I feel you on that however, SAFER barriers were still in development, that wouldn't have been a safe idea considering it was still being tested for it's impact and if it would be better than the concrete. I do feel that the HANs should've been in place much sooner, like in 2000. But that's what we're looking back at in 2024.
@@dariusgoodman4599 it’s kind of eerie because when you watch the video you see that the Bodine brothers I think we’re both wearing the Hans and even before the Daytona 500 you could see Kyle Petty wearing it most likely other than abundance of caution, considering that he was hit very hard by the death of his son like 9 to 10 months earlier. I think they said something like three or four out of the 43 drivers were wearing it and I think one of the people that also had it on before the 500 was Dale Jared and also Matt Kenneth. Considering also that it was already mandated and I think Formula One and IndyCar shows that they were well aware of how much it would help someone, and save them and a horrific crash and because of the safety precautions that were put in place after Earnhardt and then blaze Alexander dying, it certainly is the reason why Jerry Nadu and Brian Newman are alive today even if it was ending for Jerry need you and still Newman got lucky because he didn’t get hit directly on the driver side with the impact which could’ve caused catastrophic results, but it just goes to show you that matter what form of racing you’re doing it’s never gonna be safe and a lot of times you’re low into a sense of complacency because all these drivers have not died since but many have had concussions many have had bad injuries that have still resulted from a sport that is never gonna be safe and even with the tapered spacer that replaced the restrictor plate the pack racing can be catastrophic with 20 cars per Daytona or Talladega as well, if they didn’t have that you’d have guys thinking they were invincible going 230 miles an hour down the track you with all the safety equivalent it’s still not necessarily prevent something as described after the Earnhardt crash that he felt that there were several life ending injuries, including the unknown may never be explained, which is the cut lap belt, whether it was cut because of the safety workers or because Earnhardt had not properly installed them in his car, which she had a history of not doing along with loosening his lap belts after the red flag getting close to the finish. It was just a and I don’t like to say this of the tragedy that came after but it was a perfect storm of everything going wrong and I’ve seen that and we’ve all seen it almost happened at some of the races, like the Ryan Preese end over end pirouette like crash during the 2023 Daytona summer race!
Waltrip could not have pushed Earnhardt to do that. To even wonder that is off. Because Earnhardt was known for wanting to feel the track and have minimal restriction in that car. He was known to sometimes even personally beat down on his sheet metal in the car in the drivers side until he was just an inch or two off the track, he wore the open helmet and visor because he he could physically feel the draft on his face. And that’s why people claimed he could see the air. He also sat in such a manner lower and closer to the left where he could physically see the track better. Junior has spoken about these things. And all that is why Earnhardt himself was against all the new safety devices being mandated but he did want his own son to use them and be safer. It was weird he wanted those around him to use the stuff but he personally wanted to risk it. He wanted to feel the track. So no. Dw should never wonder that and I am positive he does not
Josh Berry has a lot on his shoulders. He cut his teeth in the short-track racing scene and had to earn everything he got, much like Dale Earnhardt. He was mentored by Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s son. He is taking the ride once driven by the man that Dale Earnhardt saw as his successor and ultimately became his successor. Josh Berry is NASCAR's Chosen One.
You don't realize what all goes into the NASCAR season you are watching. I was obsessed with NASCAR from 88 to about 2016. But that era from 97 till bout 02..man the obsession was unhealthy. Every thing i could watch on nascar i was watching but still this taught me a lot. I listened to your jd McDuffie book on audible...you do great work

The 2001 Daytona 500 was the first NASCAR race I ever watched and this is a brilliant deep dive into all the things leading up to it. It is very hard to watch the segments with Dale. Especially when they talk about why he prefers the open face helmet. I know it probably wouldn't have made a difference but...
I love that you're adding new titles for each entry. And I still can't believe that you undertook this labor of respect for motorsports as a whole. Thanks again, Brock!
What's funny about Darrell's comment about being in the booth and seeing Michael winning just over a week later, albeit with tragic results, he did get his wish.
Amazing work. I didn't realize that Rousch had so many sponsor issues in 2000. Love all the details in this video. Had no clue that JJ turned down driving for Ganassi.
Ya I wondered that to. kenseth and Edward’s both left and during a time that seemed like roush was unstoppable. It was a puzzling move. But I guess roush was being kinda scumbags about sponsorships and asking for way more than normal car sponsorships. It’s really sad they couldn’t get it together for kenseth and Edward’s careers, both never had that lifetime team like most drivers of there caliber. And then kenseth was pretty pushed out his ride at Gibbs for a younger guy, and it always just threw me for a loop cuz kenseth was top five every season usually a top 3 driver. He was a driver who guaranteed postseason and barring a wreck was always gonna make a deep run. I just couldn’t believe one of the elite drivers lost his seat.
Brock.. You and the people that helped you deserve something for this.I have already commented on the series but I watched it again since the episodes are all in one. I was glued to it as if I never had seen it before or knew anything about this topic. This brings back so many memories from when I was 12 years old.. as a kid, it was so hard to understand.. my hero had died.. 6 months before my grandpa had passed away also.. so as a 12 year old kid, August 2000 to September 2001 were very confusing times. I appreciate looking back on all of this now.
I was at the 2000 Brickyard 400. Became an instant Bobby Labonte fan. Such a great guy. We went down to victory lane as close as we could after the race. That's a great thing about Indy speedway - you can get really close to the victory celebration as a fan. Bobby was frequently waving to and acknowledging fans while he was being interviewed.
I swear I've watched through these four episodes probably half a dozen times and they're just as entertaining the last time as they were the first time. Looking forward to the future parts of the series without a doubt.
Oh wow! I thought this series was just about Speedweeks and the 2001 Daytona 500, but I see now you are doing the whole season?!? I guess its worth it just to get to get to "the moment" after the return to Daytona. When the entire NASCAR community cried tears of every emotion watching Junior and Mikey celebrate and hug on top of Jr's winning racecar in the Daytona infield. It was as though everyone was able to experience this collective healing shared through those effected most by the tragedy. You couldn't write a more impactful and dramatic storyline.
Great video to listen to while I'm painting cars for iRacing, you've been the guy I've looked up to in the NASCAR community since 2010 back when you were doing starting grids before each race (although I made this account later on). So I personally want to say thank you for all these years of given me and many other people content and storylines throughout the history of NASCAR.

This is exactly the season I began watching NASCAR at age 7 as Dale Sr passed 3 days after I turned said age as NASCAR 99 for the original PlayStation introduced me to the sport the Christmas before. it still amazes me when I re-watch this race and the audience is shown the strength of the 4th gen cars in the wreck where tony flipped over the field, and they talk about about how safe the cars are. And they dale dies in what is seemingly not nearly a bad wreck. If only he'd wore a full face helmet with a hanz device. I cant imagine where the sport would be now; and obviously nascar would have taken the steps to safety. But not at the cost of the sports entertainment and most beloved racer in history.
