I've used quite a number of under-wheel traction aids, and here's three of the most popular, compared. What you need is traction, flotation and an ability to act as a sort of bridge, plus light weight, robustness and ease of handling.

Oh the comments, you can have the waffle boards, been there done that, it’s old hack. I’ll stick to my trusty, light, reliable Max Trax just like the weekend warriors, almost everyone can see the advantages 👍

It’s all about use. I hope to never get stuck in mud. That crap gets everywhere. I enjoy trails and rocks. Mud is something I avoid. I bought the 2” or 5 cm waffle boards for bridging. I have a gladiator on 37’s do main concern is belly scrape. I’m hopeful the waffle boards will get me up and over when needed. Bought the x-bull just in case for mud snow etc.

My waffle boards were cut down to make them easier to carry. Got tired of the weight and size, slipperiness when wet, and splinterings . They were good for bridging. They are now my garage ramps, rather good for that.

I'll keep my cheap waffle boards thanks, can't bridge with max tracks unless you mortgage your house

You can bridge; just need 2-4 of them and they're not super expensive. But, waffles are better for bridging.

Has anyone tried staking them into ground so they don’t move particularly when using to climb rock steps? Haven’t seen it done, just wondering.

    • @L2SFBC
      @L2SFBC  3 роки тому +1

I haven't found it necessary to use stakes. Always seems to be a way to jam them in so they don't move, often requiring a little shovel work. I would be wary of whatever is used to stake them out damaging the tyres. What might work is a remote stake and a rope back.

In desperation you can use the maxtrax as a shovel. Heavy but doable. If you have road tyres then the maxtrax don't grab the tryre very well. This tends to burn the small protrusions off. The Initial tapered section should have aluminium tags.

I think you'd need to be pretty desperate to use Maxtrax as a shovel, I know they say that....but they're pretty hopeless as a shovel.
If you use four, and carefully place them right under the wheels and idle out, you won't burn the knuckles off. I haven't done so to mine over 10 years.

You can get replacement teeth. You have to drill out the burn out ones and screw in the replacement.

YOu should never buy maxtrax before buying a shovel 😁

Multi-award-winning MAXTRAX XTREME is the most advanced 4WD recovery track ever created, featuring 88 replaceable hard-anodised alloy teeth moulded into a heavy-duty, super-tough, engineering-grade reinforced Nylon recovery track.

I wonder what your thoughts are on the metal recovery boards used in the Camel Trophy events?

    • @L2SFBC

They worked. But very heavy and large so not something I'd carry generally.

The issue is that the Waffle Board will also leave fibreglass shards all over the environment and bits break off. This is unacceptable and they need to be banned until they are made of something better.
Excellent thing about MaxTrax is that they are made of Nylon. Hence they flex and bend and still look brand new. You can bend them 90° and they are fine.
Don’t buy Treds though, get genuine Maxtrax. Reason, they are symmetrical, Treds have to be used one direction and also 4 Maxtrax stack in the same height as less than 3 Treds boards.

They have their place. But they lack traction, are brittle, heavy and bulky. Not a fan for the reasons stated. Others may disagree. And there are TREDs as an alternativeto Maxtrax, and others.

Kind of ridiculous and comes across as a maxtrax fanboy. They all have there place. I have waffle boards, fake maxtrax and they are just fine. Plus I take GoTreads with my rig and they all serve a different and valuable purpose. If I only had to take one it would definitely be the waffle boards. Just not a well rationed comparison..
