  • You may immediately skip to 1:40 to see the aircraft drop 100 feet in turbulence.
This is a Philippine Airlines flight to Cebu from Manila on April 2022 on an Airbus 321 (A321) aircraft. The video starts from when the aircraft was on its initial approach and descent into Cebu, all the way up to its final approach and landing into Mactan Cebu International Airport Terminal 2 and its full stop on the gate. Incidentally, the video also shows the aircraft shaking dramatically and dropping 100 feet (in 1:48) when it encountered turbulence and airpockets thus causing some of the passengers scream and for me to drop my camera.

The issue with turbulence is that it is very hard to tell for the passengers whether the sudden descent of the aircraft is an affair that is still manageable or rather a mechanical defect with potential fatal consequences having experienced turbulence myself back in 2016 on a flight from Santo Domingo to New York when suddenly the aircraft descended twice about 500 feet and then finally another 700 feet still is fresh on my mind thank you very much and have a great afternoon 🤗🤗

Personally I got real silent and thought to myself: "If this continues for a while we might have a real problem on our hands." Fortunately nothing happened and the Delta aircraft arrived safely and on time at JFK Airport. The issue is that it is hard to distinguish turbulence from a mid air calamity and no one knows in advance if the aircraft manages to land in the end. If you're a passenger and you see those fluffy clouds that you see in this video (cumulus clouds), then expect some turbulence around them and especially if passing through them. If the aircraft had something wrong with it, you wouldn't get that sinking feeling without some change in the aircraft's attitude. If it had severe control issues, you'd feel it change bank, pitch or likely both. You would know something is wrong (excluding control issues like flaps/slats, you wouldn't know as a passenger unless you fly often enough to judge what a normal approach speed feels like). So rest assured that 99.9999% of the time you feel that sinking feeling, it will eventuate to nothing.

No such think as an “air pocket.” It’s all air. What causes this is a change in temperatures, moisture in clouds, wind, possibly a downdraft. It happens and is daunting for unexpected passengers but it isn’t dangerous. By the way, that wasn’t 100 feet.

Happens all the time in Central America, especially during rainy season afternoons, except you’re usually in a smaller aircraft. Nothing to be concerned about at that altitude. In fact, my (at the time) 4 year old screamed “wheee, let’s do it again!” What i find more disconcerting is a sudden drop like that at cruise as I experienced on night over the west coast of Ecuador. We buffeted pretty strongly after the rise and drop and the flight crew clearly had to hand fly for a few minutes to recover.

A properly trained pilot knows how to deal with turbulence, YES it is frightening depending on how bad it is, when we were deployed to Iraq turbulence was so bad you'd think the aircraft was going to break apart, but it got to a point it did not bother me as much. Remember most airline crashes occur during takeoff and landing. Trust the pilot and the aircraft and it'll be over before you know it.

This gives me ptsd from a southwest flight in like 2004 we had horrible horrible frightening turbulence that even for me as a “love to fly” guy scared me. Why after all that we then get a bomb threat and had to land in Texas and plane was routed to end of runway and we all were escorted off for baggage check. That day was the day I never ever ever ever felt the same flying. Remember 9/11 was not to long before so when we were just falling out the sky I thought they got our plane and we are done. I never will forget the people on plane praying and crying and screaming. I literally thought I was gonna die. They flew low over land for awhile I think that’s what spooked us because we were flying from LA to CA non stop. But they flew low like that to make emergency landing because of bomb threat….I still have not really flown since

Airplanes at cruise altitude constantly drop and gain 100+ feet throughout the flight . It’s you wouldn’t really notice . Nor would 100 feet be alarming . A normal decent rate is 1800-3000 feet per minute and that’s nothing scary.

So much towering CU around this time of year in the Philippines. You see many towering CU that means turbulent air, convection, updrafts and downdrafts. Can't avoid it or the planes would be way off course if they were to try and avoid heavy weather.
