THE END OF THE BIG SHALLOW...

- I didn't see any other option but to take the big shallow down. The cabinet needs to be reinforced, and I don't want to do that with a full tank on top of it.

This was not easy to do, but had to be done. As always thanks for watching guys! I appreciate all the support

I would suggest putting blocks underneath the bottom of the stand where you installed your new support beams. That way that load isn't just transferred to the bottom shelf that is not flat on the ground. Which is probably how it was intended, but your floor is not level either. 👌🏼
I was thinking the exact same thing. 👍
I would do the same in the back. Good u caught in time. Ur only. Doing half.
It hurts to see it go, but especially after the Aquadome disaster the motto really is "better save than sorry".
Whatever happens , it happens for a good reason. This is not an ending but a beginning of something better. 👍👍
Hopefully this will work out for you. Happend to me once too and I hand to hammer in some 2 x 4 lumber. Problem is that these stands are made of cheap engineered wood that do not like water. That being said - I'd throw in some screws from the other side of the walls into the lumber to tighting it up a bit. Just in case you accidently hit one of them and knock it out of place or worse they start to bow out. If you can put the lumber in the same placement on both sides of the wall and then can screw all 3 pieces together (lumber | walll | lumber) then it will be much stronger. Finally, if you can cut the lumber i would suggest you add 2 piece perpendicular to the verical pieces so the load is distrubuted across the beams. Good luck! love your videos!
Sad to see, the big shallow was such a cool tank but I am looking forward to what comes next
Yeah Buddy. Light weight baby!!! 💪
Great job 🫡
Here’s to the next project. The Big Shallow was an awesome aquascape, stunning to look at, and a great habitat for your fish. Your scapes have given me tons of inspiration. Good luck!
Glad you identified the source of the problem and fixed it. Any fix without proper leveling would have been temporary.
Bravo! Thanks for taking it down with us. We are learning how to disassemble it without harming fish. It’s not boring. 😮
I like that piece of wood very much!!😋😋🥹🥹
That was a short version 2.0, but it was memorable. Can't wait for the new version!
Ahhh, my weekly dose of light funky jazz 😀 Thanks MJ
Will miss this swallow beauty. Excited to see the new layout plan. Do it soon.
Great episode Mark! The sneak peak was such a teaser! You could stand that wood up straight like a tree or run it horizontal. Stoked to see the cabinet issues resolved and the big shallow ready to be back in business 🎉
All lot of us have been there. It’s always a good idea to inspect the tank and stand frequently while doing maintenance. Especially the seams of a rimless aquarium. Great video.
It's a very big undertaking. I just had to re-do my 75 gallon tank, taking everything out, catching all the fish. All the buckets, plants, hardscape, substrate. Took about 6 hours of time, but once you get into a rhythm it's not so bad. It's starting that's the hardest part. But now I'm done and happy. Looking forward to your finished project. Keep up the great work!
Ach, such a lot of work but well worth it when the tank becomes enjoyable again. I just took down a tank and I empathize. Looking forward to seeing the new scape👍
I love this kind of videos as they show real day to day issues and how to tackle them.. it's not just setup new scape take a few pictures and that's it. Good work 👍
What a bummer, but much better than the alternative!
Looking forward to V3
Enjoy the build 👍
It is heartbreaking to see it go, but I am excited about what new scape you will make.
Greetings from the U. K. Good work mate. Just the piece of mind having leveled and strengthened the stand will make you enjoy it again. Looking forward to the new scape.
This is so unfortunate 😢 I really loved this scape.. but this needed done as otherwise there would have been a complete disaster! Excited for your next scape on this tank 🙏🙏
Well i really liked this scape but im sure that you're gonna make another amazing scape. Looking forward to see it!!! :)
I'm glad that you solved the problem but on the other hand I was successful that this layoit btl only lasted 3 months. What recently surprised me was that my food from the same manufacturer, but with different dimensions, was also collapsing in the middle two weeks ago. I also made wooden supports and it seems to have helped.😊
RIP the most beautiful tank I’ve ever seen . Exited for what’s coming tho
Look forward to seeing your new ideas.
Totally understand your decision....but man, I loved that tank 🥺
Looking forward d to see the layout! Such a cool aquarium. Glad you got the stand sorted.
Good luck with the new aquascape!
MJ change from Aquascaping to DIY channel, but good to see your solution that make you happy.
Thanks for sharing! I really like your channel as it’s authentic. I know exactly what you’re dealing with. For me was really hard to see the removal of the plants. At the same time you will do something new and great. Cheers 🍻
Looking forward to seeing what you do next! Props for making the effort to properly fix it too.
Good call to dismantle the big shallow. Unfortunately I have experience with deformed cabinets and broken aquariums because of it. It's definitely not worth the water damage and dead fish. Like many suggest in the comments it is a wise idea to strengthen the bottom as well since it is not resting directly on the floor. And for the new project, a iwagumi like those of the green machine might be a cool idea :)
I just want to say that for a relative beginner who has faced a lot of challenges, its actually reassuring to watch a video of the problems you experience, almost more inspiring than the average beautiful scape video which feels like you just instantly set up a tank, plant it with more plants than I could put in in one installation, and have it look perfect in 30 minutes. When I see you dealing with problems, it helps me understand how I should approach problem solving myself, which makes me more likely to be proactive about dealing with issues instead of feeling intimidated and having them get worse!
I know as a youtuber it must be tempting to hide all the imperfections and make everything look amazing all the time, but again, thanks for documenting your struggles as well. I am getting much better about actively attacking small problems which keeps them from becoming big problems, which keeps me enjoying the tank more, which makes maintenance more enjoyable and less of a burden... and the cycle continues, until I feel a lot less stress overall. Thanks man!
Hi MJ
A jungle scape with cuttings from every plant you have would be interesting, and watch it grow out.
the previous scape was awesome but looking forward for the new scape im sure it will be awesome, keep on scaping 😊
3:44 A dead lifter saying it's heavy 😅 . Waiting for shallow tank 3.0 . Nice video 🧡
Crud. i loved that tank but i get how you only "saw" worry every time you looked at it, which would drive me crazy too!
Hi Mark, good luck with this. I assume you are confident the cabinet was weakened by the central feet being set too low, not that the floor gave under the weight. If the floor, then surely you do need a board to spread the weight evenly under the cabinet. Think the support 'sticks', timbers, reinforcement beams, are a good idea.
Looking forward for a new theme on your big shallow.
Just an idea. The foam is a problem, too. In your case. The Cabinet is not built for heavy Scapes like this. So, if you load it, is quite common, that heavy Tanks will behave like that when used with foam and these Cabinets. What you can do to improve that is, next to improving the cabinet, having a stable and straight surface and then, maximum, these hard and really thin foams, you often usw beneath laminate floor ( I do not know the english word. German: Laminatboden). There IS somewhere a "paper" on this behavior. But it's in german (Should work for you, i guess?) and i have to search for it. The bottomglass will form somekind of belly in the middle, that will push pressure in the center and because of the foam, there is no direct resistance and the Edges of the Wooden Baseplate warp upwards, while the center sinks in. The whole Wooden Plate warpes. This does not happen, if you place your Tank without or with just a really thin and rather hard foam beneath. This is aways part of a huge discussion. Often people say "i use styrofoam since '78 and never had a problem." Because Styrofoam ist not like these "aquarium" Foammatts. They are way too soft for their thickness. This is mostly important when having heavy tanks. Most of the time, the tank will be fine, even with these foammats. But not heavy tanks. These standard cabinets are often not suited for heavy loads like this. It is laughable sometimes. And now. let the hatecomments begin.
You could make some kind of riverstyle aquascape on the big shallow, with some hillstream loaches
A Shame but there is nothing else you could do. Looking forward to whatever you come up with next.
Glad to see you reinforcing the cabinet. Hopefully this saves you a lot of headaches in the future!
Sad to see it go but it was the right call. Looking forward to V3. Crossing fingers you don't run into anymore serious issues.
Sad to see but looking forward to seeing what's next! 🙂
Aww, what a shame :( You gotta do what you gotta do though, and on the bright side, now we can look forward to a new setup video! I love watching you design and build such beautiful underwater worlds :)
To bad, loved that scape! Exited to see the new one though! It might be a good idea to follow up on some of the reinforcement suggestions in the comments about fixing the beams to the cabinet walls. They should become an integral part of your cabinet.
Lol man you always get me with these titles. Starts off I'm thinking like "oh man he's getting rid of it completely!" but thankfully you're able to effect a repair and just do a whole new setup. Stop playing with my emotions MJ.
You could easily fix the issue of the cabinet by just adding a MDF of 3-5cm in between the aquarium and the cabinet.
I had this issue before for the same reasons and after fixing it, even with water splashing in the MDF, I never had issues again. Of course the MDF must be painted and reinforced against water to avoid swallowing parts. It's cheap, easy to do and in the end looks good, if painted at the same color of the cabinet.
Fancy seeing you here!
How are you doing man? I hope you are better 🙏🏼
Light weight baby.... Very Ronnie Coleman 😂👌🏻
Herkenbaar werkje. Hoop dat je balkjes het houden, en niet de vloer van de kast beïnvloed. Ik blijf het volgen. 👍
Excited for the next built
This is why I always build “Joey” stands myself for all my tanks
So excited to see what it’s next for this new scape
i personally wouldve put 2" by 4" wood inside stand to strutt it up and that be definitely strong enough, its a lovely aquascape you had shame it was taken down, i loved it so. Also reinforce that top too
I was not emotionally prepared
It is unfortunate but I look forward to what inspirational scape you create next and hopefully you won't experience the same issues with the new setup.
the big shallow as always a beautiful layout MJ, even in it's last cloudy days. Maybe a little too much hardscape if i was being critical.
Before you get started on the new scape: Check the feet under that cabinet to see if they spin!!! Often times those style cabinets have adjustable feet so that you can level one side vs. the other.
I'd definitely seal that timber so it can't swell or warp later when it gets damp which it will. Looking forward to the new scape👍
Watching basically every JSAqua video, the foam is 100% the issue. No matter how thick the cabinet’s wooden board is, it will bend under the pressure of the mat. Two mat stripes left and right are enough. The aquarium can float in the center.
Always hurts to have to take a tank down, but I know you’ll make something even better then the original.
Right decision!
The big shallow has looked equally great in both layouts, and maybe a jungle inspired scape would look great for version 3.0
Also great video Mark and the production quality is only increasing as time goes on. Excited to see what the new layout will be!
Usually the back of any furniture brings the main rigidity, as with humans. I see now that the cabinet lacks its back and I believe this is one of the main reasons for the problem. Think about adding back plates and make holes for the pipes and cables if the current upgrade ends up failing. Hope it won't of course.
good job ....😀
Very impressive! I have alot of questions, but let's start with an easy one! Which climbing(?) plants were growing on that top branch that you removed first? They look so nice with those tiny roundish leaves, im really curious to what they are!
Nice decision, even it's hard 👍🏻
You can also do a gaint dutch style aquascape, whe know u like plants and your dutch :)
HURRY UP IM SO EXCITED TO SEE THE NEW LAYOUT!!!!!
Maybe this weekend!
Heb hetzelfde onderstel. Belachelijk dat de voeten niet verstelbaar zijn. Wat je ook zou kunnen doen is een frame maken die compleet waterpas is en daar deze kast op plaatsen zonder voeten... maar dit werkt ook ;)
Its about time. A normal 120P
God damnit man, I thought I was going to see the new layout...
Soon!
The foam matt is actually the cause of the bend. You would be surprised how much pressure a soft matt can produce over a big enough surface.
its all good. but you coulda used a car jack and some wood to do so with the tank on top. ive done this with my plastic shelf that was caving (ie cuz plastic). but actually im not sure if you have a car as you seem to take the bus a lot so yeh if you didnt have a car just getting a car jack for it is pretty wasteful. this isy your signature tank so you want it to be super nice and stable
Love this scape but excited for the next one 👍🏻
Honestly mate just get a carpenter in. The load ontop must be like 500+ kg. You’re gonna need decent support for that kind of load. If I were to suggest anything for now. It would be installing 5 leg supports, one on each corner and one in the middle, or even two. But wouldn’t leave you much space to put everything back in. Gl
There's no use for the wooden sticks, the sidepanels of the middle cabinet do the trick already. Just support the the middle underneath the cabinet and you're good to go.
Such a shame you had to break down the big shallow to rescue the cabinet. But sure 3.0 will be just as exciting and beautiful
Wood supports is one way instead of saying sticks for us Americans Mark lol I heard you unsure of how to say it! Also really happy you played it safe and removed the tank to reinforce the stand everything doesn’t always go as planned but now that you are fixing the issues I think you’ll have a better chance for success doing a rescape
It's really sad to see this go. I thought it was recovered by now :(
Dit probleem is begonnen nadat je het vulsysteem heb geïnstalleerd.
Ik zou het voor de zekerheid checken met het kleine aquarium in de kast volledig gevuld met water.
Maybe the foam mat itself is the problem. I recommend JS Aqua on UA-cam on this topic. Good luck that it will come out good.
Also adding to my last comment u need to put wood under each feet of stand. The design was for it to hold also do vertical in back. If u don't it will be uneven support.if it was bowing in front ill bet in was in back
That was a big job!🥵
Hey MJ about to set up my second tank. Was looking for affiliate links for lights on your videos. Chihiros WRGBII Slim Edition for amazon but it's the only one I've found do you have any more amazon affiliate links for lights I can check out. Would love to support you.
Also best of luck with the big shallow was a fun build to watch sad to see it go for now.
You need a stand with adjustable legs underneath to compensate for your floor.
I think starting from scratch was the right thing to do. The consequences of doing a 'bodge job' could have been catastrophic had the tank shattered.
Some things are worth doing properly.
I’d love to see a tank with a peninsula arrangement where only one of the shorter sides of the tank is up against a wall
I mean to be honest those costly display stands are not designed for the weights of a aquarium. They are not tested and quality assured for intended use.
To be honest, for me it was one of your worse tanks. I'm kinda' happy to see it go as I love your works and I'm sure that the next one will be a blast!
You looked so tired after dismanteling everything. Hopefully the cabinet will be stronger with the new support. I'm not sure if these are built to hold a huge amount of weight
Hey Mark , 🎬 That's definitely a wrap & you have always had a great attitude in the past and it is going to be a great layout and one that you can make some improvements along the ? ....I am just wondering what are the thoughts as far as when you are finished up and you like what you just made my? Do you leave it alone aside from maintaining or will you still see a scape in a way that makes you want the want it to be better than?? ?
Yeah I think I'm always looking for ways to improve a layout, either by making the plants look healthier or by making small changes to the layout, something like that.
Ah the number one joykill of the aquarium hobby, the gravity. I hate that you get the bright idea to put an aquarium on a furniture and then it starts to bend, has happened to me twice already. Even small aquariums are surprisingly heavy.
To be honest it shud be taken down. Because i find it more of a plaudarium and I dnt get the vibe of actual planted tank . Previous tank was so much better, i hope we will get to see a tank with new ideas thank you.
Man, I would have bought a new stand 🤣
Can you tell me which tank n cabinet brand is that , been looking for a shallow
